View 10 RepliesI have two experimental web services. One is an asmx contained within a .net web application. The other is a WCF service library being invoked from the web application.The asmx basically does everything I need, but I think WCF would be better, except that it doesn't do anything as I would expect after fiddling with the asmx service.For example, the same method behaves differently in each:
' ASMX
<WebMethod(BufferResponse:=True, EnableSession:=False)>
Function Test(aObject as Object) as Object
' object will have been successfully serializaed into a dictionary

I do have some classes that implement their own serialization/deserialization but I'm doing all of these without implementing system.runtime.serialization.ISerializable. so my question is what exactly is the benefit of using system.runtime.serialization.ISerializable ? in what example situation will we need to implement system.runtime.serialization.ISerializable?
View 2 RepliesI've been using XML serialization for a while, and today I realized something really odd. If I have a new line right after a "dot" (.), when i deserialize, I lose the dot. Has anyone ever had this happen to them? The following is my serialization code:

i am studying and now working with Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition. I am working on my project regarding "Serialization". I wanna to start my working with "System.Runtime.Serialization.Formatters.Binary" namespace because i am working on serialization project. I know by default IDE dosen't import it. So i went to add it in my project at "Add reference dialog" but i still unable to find out this namespace.
View 1 RepliesI was hoping someone may be able to point me in the right direction in regards to the format of a Json.I've never really worked with Json's and Serialization before so it's all a little new.I need to return a Json from .Net in the following format.[[Date.UTC(2011,12,14,8), 8], [Date.UTC(2011,12,14,9), 1]]
I'm almost there but am struggling with the format of my string, as by default the string is quoted. This is what I have:

Could I have been googling with no joy regarding the fact that my program is not displaying changes made when I run it (Debug).
It is an old program (hence the 2003 VB.NET code) I wrote for my daily use and I decided to make some modifications to make it more useful.
When trying to install a program I keep getting the following error:"I'm sorry. your system seems to be missing the Microsoft VB runtime DLLs to install this game. Click OK to go download them. Once they are installed restart the installation".When I click OK - I am taken to a Dairy Queen website. Is this an issue with the software (which I used under Windows XP with no problems) or do I have to search for the missing files? I installed VB 6 but still get this error.
View 5 RepliesI have a vb .net application where the user can choose a directory into which an excel file is written. If the user selects a system directory (yes, my users do this, don't ask me why) then a System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException is thrown at runtime. I am handling this exception telling the user to please select another directory.
View 1 RepliesI have been getting a lot of crash reports sent from my application that describe System.Web not being found.
I was able to reproduce the problem, and at first it seems that it would be caused by not running .NET 4.0, however, my test machine is running Windows 7 SP1 with .NET 4.0,
How would I go about fixing this problem? Was System.Web deprecated?
I am been stuck on this for 3 days now...I have been accessing the twitter api to pull a user_timeline for a list of users and the json that comes back is impossible to work with. I tried to deserialize it using javascriptserializer and get an error:invalid object passed in , ':' or '}'
Now this is frustrating since I expect the json being returned to be error free. Then I tried json.net and split the posts using string.split and tried to convert each post to Jobject or jarray. for Jarray I get
'unexpected end of content while loading jArray
[Code]...
Now I have formatted the code here and not pasted the whole file but it does look like valid json to me and I do not alter anything after receiving the stream from the twitter api. Can someone please point me in the right direction? I really need to get this stuff parsed?
I'm using a 64 Bit Windows 7 system and trying to use PrintDialog. I know it doesn't work on Windows 7 unless you add this
PrintDialog1.UseEXDialog = True
So I have added that code but then I get this error for the following
Dim result As DialogResult = PrintDialog1.ShowDialog()
And the error:
"An exception of type 'System.Runtime.InteropServices.SEHException' occurred in System.Windows.Forms.dll but was not handled in user code
Additional information: External component has thrown an exception."
I'm strugling the whole day with the next JSON string
{
"0":{"link":"afbeeldingenplaatje1.jpg"},
"1":{"link":"afbeeldingenplaatje2.jpg"},
"2":{"link":"afbeeldingenplaatje3.jpg"}
}
How can i deserialize this? What's wrong with the next code (vb.net)

I must be missing something very obvious...Using Visual Studio 2005 to write a vb app for Windows CE. I'm trying to use the NetworkInformation namespace of System. I can see it in my object browser, but when I try to use it in my form, it doesn't come up in the autocomplete and the compiler complains that "NetworkInformation is not a member of Net".
View 1 RepliesI am trying to execute a VB .net console application called Application1 that I created using Visual Studio 2008 with .net framework 3.5. When I run it under the windows scheduler or from a command prompt it works fine. When I try to run it under a purchased job scheduler, I get a message stating that directory APPLIC~1.config is missing. What properties does system.configuration use when it tries to find an application's .config file? Can these be set when my application starts?
Note: I was able to use ConfigurationManager.OpenExeConfiguration(My.Application.Info.DirectoryPath & "" & My.Application.Info.AssemblyName & ".exe") to get around this issue but would like a cleaner solution. I do not want to do this each time I want to retrieve an appSetting entry.
Ok so I have a small problem with an error I am catching. It only produces the file name and not the actual path of the file.I want to delete a folder and all the files and folders inside of it. However an error is thrown when a file is "read-only". A quick fix would be to set the attributes of that file to normal and then try again, the only problem is the error doesn't give you the location of the file.

I have a JSON response from a web service that I need to be converted to an object then to an array. My response is similar to the one below:
{"status":{"error":"NO","code":"200","description":"none","message":"Request ok"},"geolocation":{"lat":"38.89515","lng":"-77.0310"},"stations":[{"country":"United States","regPrice":"0.00","midPrice":"0.00","prePrice":"0.00","streetAddress":"1401, I St[code]....
I am doing this is VB.NET within a console for now. Basically I am trying to create a simple way to test my API calls and output the information. What I am trying to accomplish is having to loop through the JSON array and list the stations.
#1 is C# Class Library, where I have my EF model defined (3.5 sp1) and some public methods.#2 is a VB winforms app.In the winforms app, I have referenced the C# library and added the connection string for the EF model. The problem I am having is that I have a form where the user selected a .txt file to import. On the VB side, I create a byte() from the file, then pass it to a public method cleverly called Process. In Process(), everything runs smoothly until I instantiate the EF model.

I have tried several versions of this with no luck. The casting of the worksheet works as my data is entered in other parts, but I have a section where I need to add data 1 column right of the cell containing the 'str(0)' value. Most of these parameters are optional. I have even tried the System.Reflection.Missing object.

How can I convert a JSON string to an array OR a JSON string to XML in VB.NET? I know how to do this in C#, as I have read dozens of articles on it, however, I am unable to figure out how to achieve the same result in VB.NET.
I'm using the System.Web.Script namespace via System.Web.Extensions.dll (from Microsoft).
I'm willing to use an additional DLL file if needed.
I'm sure this has been asked before but I'm not finding quite the information I'm needing so I thought I'd post this.
I've written a PHP script that returns a simple JSON object that looks like this:
{"status":"success","level":"admin"}
I'm doing a standard web request that submits the required data to the script over the internet and that's working fine.
Now, I want to use JSON.NET to pull out the individual variables so I can know what the values of "status" and "level" are. The problem is, I have no idea where to start.
I'm doing this in VB.NET (on the .NET Compact Framework).
I am having a problem with this code. I have used this code before on other apps and it works, but I don't have a clue as to what is going on here.
This is the whole event. I get a runtime error msg thats says "Syntax error(Missing Operator) in query expression"
I think this is Legacy SQL coding but I don't know how to make it better.

When I add a new, empty form to my VB.NET VS9 project, the linenherits System.Windows.Forms.Formis missing.What am I doing wrong here?I thought it would be added automatically.I experienced that some thing get weird if this line is not there (Form_Load is not firing, I think).
View 3 RepliesI am accessing the facebook api and using the json.net library (newtonsoft.json.net)I declare a Jobject to parse the content and look for the specific elements and get their values. Everything works fine for the first few but then I get this unexplained nullexception error " (Object reference not set to an instance of an object)Now I took a look at the declaration but cannot see how to change it. Dim jobj as JObject = JObject.Parse(responseData) message = jobj("message").tostring
The error occurs at the last line above.I check to see if message is null and then look for the next desired field as follows
[Code]...
This is one example where "message" does not appear in the first few lines but appears later. So what I do is look for position of message and description and which ever is first go and get that and if I get an error or the fields do not return anything, I try and parse by regex and even that is not working right.
One element of My.Settings is a Specialized.StringCollection. This has been working fine for months. Starting two days ago I always get the following message -

I need to generate a class at runtime similar to System.Resources where you can add a resource eg 'picture.bmp' and it immediatelly is accessible as 'System.Resources.picture.bmp'. I presume I need to generate XLM or/and XLSD at design time and then deserialise at runtime but I cant find a reference on how to do this. Specially without knowing the generic class in advance (as 'System.Resources' doesnt know all the resources in advance).
