System.Threading.Timer Fails To Fire After Minimizing Window?

Mar 16, 2009

I have used timers in .Net for a long time now an never had this problem.Start timer to fire every 10 seconds that reads an object and updates the UI using a delegate.This works great until the form is minimized several times, then the timer thread seems to vanish.Anyone come across this before?

Obviously I can roll my own using a thread directly and sleeping it, however this seems like reinventing the wheel when a threading timer class exists already.
Code: Private Sub m_Tmr_Tick(ByVal state As Object)

Progress Bar - Threading - Minimizing Window

Oct 17, 2010

Part of my application deals with creating a number of pivot tables. I pull data from a local database, and store it in a datatable. From here, the data is processed and eventually a pivot table is returned. On small data sets it works well, but on some larger one there is a few seconds of "nothing" until the table is shown.

After a few iterations of trying things to display some form of progress I have ended up with a form with nothing but a progress bar running on it. I spawn a new thread, and run it. It works exactly like I hoped. However, when I call the thread.abort() method to terminate the thread, occasionally, the main form will minimize. I tired having me.show() aftre the .abort() to bring the form into view again, but it appears not to have helped.

Now I understand that it is better practice to have worker background threads, and the main thread for UI, but is there a simple way of ensuring that the main form does not close?

Private Sub LoadProgressForm()
Dim progressForm As New ProgressBar
progressForm.ShowDialog()

How To Use System.threading.timer

Nov 4, 2009

I have used system.timers.timer to watch several folders and move files in my windows service. But the timer event stops now and then. I have read that it is better to use system.threading.timer in services.This is my system.timers.timer

Private Timer As New System.Timers.Timer
AddHandler Timer.Elapsed, New System.Timers.ElapsedEventHandler(AddressOf Me.Timer_Elapsed)
Timer.Interval = 4000
Timer.Start()

[code]....

How do this code look like in system.threading.timer?How do i start and stop the timer using threading? That is very important because i stop the timer when it comes to the elapsed event and when the code har run it starts the timer again!

.net - Accurate Windows Timer - System.Timers.Timer() Is Limited To 15 Msec

Jan 15, 2009

I need an accurate timer to interface a Windows application to a piece of lab equipment.I used System.Timers.Timer() to create a timer that ticks every 10 msec, but this clock runs slow. For example 1000 ticks with an interval of 10 msec should take 10 wall-clock seconds, but it actually takes more like 20 wall-clock sec (on my PC). I am guessing this is because System.Timers.Timer() is an interval timer that is reset every time it elapses. Since it will always take some time between when the timer elapses and when it is reset (to another 10msec) the clock will run slow. This probably fine if the interval is large (seconds or minutes) but unacceptable for very short intervals.Is there a function on Windows that will trigger a procedure every time the system clock crosses a 10 msec (or whatever) boundary?

UPDATE: System.Timers.Timer() is extremely inaccurate for small intervals.I wrote a simple program that counted 10 seconds several ways:

Interval=1, Count=10000, Run time = 160 sec, msec per interval=16
Interval=10, Count=1000, Run time = 16 sec, msec per interval=15
Interval=100, Count=100, Run time = 11 sec, msec per interval=110
Interval=1000, Count=10, Run time = 10 sec, msec per interval=1000

It seems like System.Timers.Timer() cannot tick faster that about 15 msec, regardless of the interval setting.Note that none of these tests seemed to use any measurable CPU time, so the limit is not the CPU, just a .net limitation (bug?)For now I think I can live with an inaccurate timer that triggers a routine every 15 msec or so and the routine gets an accurate system time. Kinda strange, but...I also found a shareware product ZylTimer.NET that claims to be a much more accurate .net timer (resolution of 1-2 msec). This may be what I need. If there is one product there are likely others.

Fire The Timer Or Other Routine While Still The WHILE TRUE Routine Checks For Incoming Connections And Messages?

Jan 24, 2012

I am using sockets to send message between computers. I send the messages alright. What I want is when the message "x0x" comes, the client must be closed within 5 minutes. Teh admin can cancel the request by sending message "-xx" as well. The routine that checks for incoming connections and accepts messages uses WHILE TRUE...END WHILE since it must always listen. Once I get a message, I need to fire a timer control or other that fires within 5 minutes. But the program cant leave the WHILE TRUE at all. If i exit it early, the timer fires and the program does get exit. How do I fire the timer or other routine while still the WHILE TRUE routine checks for incomin connections and messages?

C# - What Could Cause System.Timers.Timer.set_Enabled Property To Throw A System.NullReferenceException

Apr 4, 2012

Here is the stack trace:

2012-03-16 19:15:09Z E System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
at System.Timers.Timer.set_Enabled(Boolean value)
at System.Timers.Timer.Stop()

Here's the code:

Timer declared as private member variable.
Private _myTimer As System.Timers.Timer
Initialize timer method.

[code]....

The timer has to have a value or else the Timer.Stop() call would be throwing the exception. This is a sporadic error and I'm just trying to see if anyone has experienced this before or if anyone has any ideas of what could be causing it. It is occuring in a WinForms application in the event handler for the Elapsed event of the Timer, but it is only occuring sporadically on the users computer. I haven't been able to reproduce the error myself.

Send Email With System.net.mail Fails?

May 29, 2009

I get the following error:Application-defined or object-defined error.From what I can understand, it's when I attempt to attach a file to the email, I get that error. What I noticed is that it's because the file is in use.Is there anyway to attach the file anyway? My users are simply not closing their files after saving, right now I'm using computer manager to kick them out. The process is for them to save a file on a server through a share and then I pick that up and send it. Works fine as long as they close the file after save.

.net - System.Threading.ThreadstateException?

Apr 2, 2010

I'm developing an adding for office powerpoint application.I'm trying to display a description of the object(Customized object) currently dropped on the powerpoint slide in design mode(Design mode of the powerpoint).When i click on my addin the related object description will be displayed on a tabbed window as the first tabpage.

There is a button on the tab page, and when i click on it i need the description to get copied to windows clipboard.I tried this using clipboardclass it throws the following exception, System.Threading.ThreadstateException {"Current thread must be set to single thread apartment (STA) mode before OLE calls can be made. Ensure that your Main function has STAThreadAttribute marked on it."}

Code for clipboard:
Clipboard.Clear()
Clipboard.SetText(lblObjectID.Text)

I searched the net for a solution and got couple of answers like, Put [STAThread] in the main function Thread.CurrentThread.SetApartmentState(ApartmentState.STA) Immediately before your call to SetDataObject.

But I'm not sure where to put the 1st one and the 2nd option didn't work.

VS 2008 System.Threading.ManualResetEvent?

Oct 28, 2009

I'm just looking for other people's thoughts and opinions on the way I have done something.I have a console application which needs to connect to various computers and reset the local admin password on each one. I got it all working but then decided that as there are a lot of PCs, it would be a good idea to use the thread pool to do a few at the same time.The problem is, I need this program to be run without any human interaction - so I cant just use ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem and pass it all of the computers to connect to, because then the program would exit after it had called QueueUserWorkItem for each one because there is nothing left for it to do. I cant stick a Console.ReadLine in there because like I said, it needs to be run automatically without anyone typing anything.
