Stop Windows Error Window When Application Fails To Connect To Webservice?
Jan 11, 2010
My application is connecting to a webservice but when the webservice is offline, it will show a messagebox saying there has occured an error in my application. Giving me the option to send a report...I surrounded my whole code with a try catch to catch unsuspected errors. But still this window appears. How can I stop this?

I have a web service that I will need to add as a web service reference in my vb.net application which is a plug-in to Outlook. I initially tried adding the reference by right clicking on the Project and selecting "Add Service Reference". In the box that pops up, I type the web service url in the address field and the namespace name and click ok.

I wrote an application on windows XP using visual studio 2008. Based on the .net framework 3.5. For some reason that I do not understand the application refuses to run on windows 7. You would think that if the .net framework 3.5 was installed on the windows 7 machine it would run.

I have written a vb.net app that runs in multiple hospital networks. THe vb client periodically contacts a off-site webservice for datatransfers.The issue I am getting at a particular hospital is that the client PC's are not on the hospital's domain. So they are sort of off the radar. They do use the hospital network for internet access. When the user opens a web browser they are asked for domain
userid and password. If not are provided then they cannot proceed. What do I need to do with my vb.net code to make the webserver calls prompt for and use the proper domain user id and password?

We just spent 300 man-hours fixing a buggy application in the field. It all came down to calling Application.DoEvents (re-entrancy problem).This was not caught in design reviews, code reviews.The code was inserted two years ago with the first version; the application was always "flaky" but recent changes exposed the re-entrancy problems to a greater degree. This incident is the second time in our organization that Application.DoEvents caused failures and multi-man hours of debugging.It was discovered in this case by simply noticing the call,buried way down in a complex event handler for an asynchronous task.What do you suggest to prevent this issue from happening again:
Add checkin gates to source control?
Developer training?
Code Analysis rules (why is this not already a built-in rule?)
How to I enforce a coding practice?

I've came across a little problem with my tcp / ip server. My client can connect to it with 127.0.0.1 ( localhost ), and 192.168.0.X, but every remote connection fails to connect.
Here's the connection rituals:
Server
listener = New System.Net.Sockets.TcpListener(System.Net.IPAddress.Any, Port)
listener.Start()
listenThread = New System.Threading.Thread(AddressOf doListen)
listenThread.IsBackground = True
listenThread.Start()
Client
client = New System.Net.Sockets.TcpClient(IP, Port)
client.GetStream.BeginRead(readBuffer, 0, BYTES_TO_READ, AddressOf DoRead, Nothing)

The application sits on a virtual environment and when I remote in and run the application, it connects to the remote database. However, when I remote in with a service account and double click the same .exe, it tries to connect to the local host database and ignores the app.config. The code is the same, only the login name I use is different. The login I use is part of the local admin group. Any ideas?

I have used timers in .Net for a long time now an never had this problem.Start timer to fire every 10 seconds that reads an object and updates the UI using a delegate.This works great until the form is minimized several times, then the timer thread seems to vanish.Anyone come across this before?
Obviously I can roll my own using a thread directly and sleeping it, however this seems like reinventing the wheel when a threading timer class exists already.

My app starts an On-Screen Keyboard process like this:
Dim PID as System.Diagnostics.Process
:
PID = Process.Start("C:WindowsSystem32osk.exe")
:
[CODE]...
It seems to work 90% of the time. However, sometimes the PID.Kill() fails because it says the process already exited. At this point the OSK is always still there on screen. Yes, I know my code should be testing to see if the process is still running before trying to kill it, but given that the OSK is still on screen..

I'm in the process of converting a VB6.0 application to VB.Net (2008 Express). I have a MDI parent form, I'll call mdiBackground, and 4 MDI child forms, frmStatus, frmShow, frmQwerty, and frmSentence.The layout is as follows:mdibackground - has the menus at top and is a container for the child forms.frmSentence - appears at the top frmShow & frmQwerty - appear at the left and when one is closed the other one is in the same position.frmStatus - appears at the right, it has buttons which control when frmShow and frmQwerty are to appear I have a couple of regular forms that act as dialog forms. The Me.Close() works fine on these.

We have a VB.Net application which works fine in our tests in different Windows XP SP3 machines. However there is one machine in which is displaying this error:
Unable to connect to any of the specified MySQL hosts
Using the mysql command, we can successfully connect to the database. We already checked for any other application or firewall that could be blocking the connection but it seems fine. We also reinstalled the system (no errors during the installation) but the MySQL error message doesn't change.
The system settings are exactly the same as in the other computers. We are using "localhost" as server in the connection string. The "hosts" file has its default values (nothing strange in there).

I have a Visual Basic DLL, I used it in a Windows User Control Application. It works fine, but when I HOST this Windows User Control in another Windows Forms application, it gives me the following error.
An error occurred creating the form. See Exception.InnerException for details. The error is: Creating an instance of the COM component with CLSID {66DF4F1A-E3E2-43D3-92BC-D56E9DDCB8AC} from the IClassFactory failed due to the following error: 800a005b.
When I run the User Control it works fine with me, ONLY when I host it in another Windows application this error occurs.
I'm using Visual Studio 2008 & Windows Server 2003 when I add the User Control, the DLL path is "C:Documents and SettingsUSERNAMEMy DocumentsVisual Studio 2008ProjectsHMS_WF4HMS_WF4objReleaseInterop.DLLNAME.dll"
Notes. it's in Release, but when I compile the application it puts the output in the Debug folder. Even if I select the Release folder for debugging and compilation, when the application is run, it searches for the DLL in the Release folder, but it's in the Debug folder.
