Getting Mac ManagementClass Takes To Long To Fail?

Jan 28, 2009

I'm using the following code to fetch a mac address

Try
Dim cls As New ManagementClass("\" & IP & "
ootcimv2", "Win32_NetworkAdapter", New ObjectGetOptions(Nothing, TimeSpan.MaxValue, False))
Dim col As Object

[Code]...

It is working as expected. My problem is that it seems to wait far too long for devices which do not respond, and when the output of GotMac is "The RPC server is unavailable. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x800706BA)" How do I shorten the wait time for these types of events?

WPF Application Takes Too Long To Start

Dec 16, 2011

I am creating a WPF Application that uses Fluent library.

On my computer with Windows 7, 2GB RAM and AMD Triple Core processor, after double clicking on the program icon, The Splash image shows after about 1-2 seconds.

But on my brother's old computer with Windows XP, 512MB RAM and Intel Celeron 2.0 GHz Processor (Single core), after double clicking on the program icon, First, a process called PresentationFontCache.exe runs and it uses almost 100% of CPU for some seconds. And Total time is needed for displaying the initial Splash image is almost 30 seconds (or more).

I don't want that some users have to wait 30 seconds for displaying splash image and about 7-8 seconds for loading application. (my application load process takes 7-8 seconds)

Network Request Timeout If It Takes Too Long?

Feb 18, 2010

I've been using VB for exactly a week today and for that past 4 hours I've been pulling my hair out! My problem is that our software can only run on one PC on a site, if two instances are running they cause issues. So instead of checking each PC individually I created a program with VB to do this (and other tasks) for me. The problem with the network search is that if I cannot access a remote PC (usually access is denied) then it hangs for a long time before moving on to the next. Can I introduce a timeout feature where the program tries to access the c drive but if it does this for more than 5 seconds and gets nowhere then it moves on? [code]'testcpath' is \pcnamec$ and the other two paths look for the software I'd need to remove if found. So basically, if I have access to every c drive it works fine and completes within a few minutes. If I don't have access to even a small amount then it takes an absolute age.

VS 2008 - Anyway To Time How Long It Takes A Message Box To Pop Up?

Sep 9, 2009

I'm trying to time how long an operation takes in Visual Basic (VS 2008) but its not working. the code I have is as follows:

[code]...

this is in an OnClick event, so what happens is that the user can click a menu item, and it goes and sends any changes it has to a database, and pulls down any new changes to a local data cache. This operation takes time, depending on how many changes are on the server and how many are cached locally. I've thought about making this a background task, so it doesn't draw away from the main app while it's running, but before doing that, I'd like to get an idea how long the operation takes. Since I can't exactly do a progress bar, I figured using the stopwatch would tell me how many ticks/milliseconds would occur between click, and when the "total synced" message comes up, but every time i run it and do an update the message always shows 0 ticks/ms. I don't think it's accounting for the delay, just from start to finish. Is there any way to make it so it detects a message popping up and times off that?

VS 2008 Seeing Long It Takes To Copy File

Aug 12, 2009

Here's the (Timer1's interval is set to "1" in the designer, and it is set to "Enabled" in the designer as well.)

vb.net
Public timeElapsed As Int32Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
timeElapsed = 0
Timer1.Start()

[Code]...

The issue is, timeElapsed always comes back as equaling 0, so fileCopySpeed always equals infinity. Also note that test.dat is a 100MB file. There's no way it's getting copied in under 1 millisecond!

Application Made In Studio Takes Very Long To Start Up

Dec 29, 2011

I wrote an app in Visual Studio and is about 20k+ lines, but I don't know why it takes so long to start up. I have a splash screen just to test it to see if the program is working, and it is, but I have to wait for so long for the app to actually get to the start up form. A splash screen for this app isn't ideal, but was only using a splash screen for test purposes.

Cut & Paste To Textbox Then Sql Server Update Takes Too Long?

Apr 20, 2011

I've written a small application that keeps track of my thesis notes and essentially I have a few textboxes for keywords, ideas and notes. When I type in the textboxes and hit my update button it works fine...when I cut and paste from a text editor into the textboxes and then hit my update button it takes way to long to return control to the form. Is there something I need to do to text that is copied and pasted into a text box before I send it to the database?

Program Becoming Unresponsive Whilst Running Long Code

Jan 31, 2011

I'm currently trying to write a football simulator but am having issues with the computer becoming unresponsive. There are long lines of code (several thousand lines) that are executed over and over as one run of the code is equivalent to one second of game time. While the game is setup to be like Football Manager where you watch the game live, there will also be cases where the entire game is simulated without you watching. When doing a full sim of a game, I just have a loop which executes the code block 7200 times (games go for two hour roughly).

At the moment this takes about a minute but even when I get it down to the desired 5-10 seconds or so, I dislike the fact that the computer becomes completely unresponsive during this time. In a round there are 9 games and you'll be simulating without watching 8 of them. You're looking at 1-2 minutes of simulation time or possibly more. I can't have a loading screen that long! How can I program the game so it runs these simulations yet the game still remains responsive? It'd be fine if the user could muck around in the menus and stuff while the simulation runs.

Forms :: Process MainWindowHandle - Simple GUI Form To Hide / Show / Minimize / Terminate / Force Terminate

Sep 11, 2011

I have a simple GUI form to hide / show / minimize / terminate / force terminate Processes. i can do all well but for show and hide i need the MainWindowHandle to show or hide it

So here is hide process code:

Dim Proc As New Process = Process.GetProcessesById(List.SelectedRows(0).Cells(1))
Dim hwnd = Proc.MainWindowHandle
ShowWindow(hwnd,0)

If i try the same with show code:

Terminate A Program Immediately From Try Catch?

Jan 19, 2010

I am trying to end a program immediately when a critical exception is caught. But I am finding that code after my Try/Catch block is executing even though the code withing the Catch block is executing, and that Catch code is calling Me.Close.

I suspect it has something to do with background .net threads or something, but I have no clue how to deal with those kinds of issues. How can I stop the program as quickly as possible? If code after my Catch executes, it will (and does) throw lots of uncaught exceptions later. Currently, it is not feasible for me to try to catch all the other exceptions. I just want to report an error and end the program. In my form load routine, I create and set up a number of objects and arrays by calling various subroutines. The success of most of the subroutines depends on the sucess of three subs in particular, which are called early on. If one of those three fails, there will undoubtedly be a number of hard to trap exceptions later on in the load routine.

Program Takes All Cpu?

May 10, 2010

A couple days, I figured up a working program and it was def. faster than what we needed. Now, adding a couple more loops, the program barely uses any memory, but the cpu used spikes up to 90+ and just letting it sit doesn't help.I tried taking out the couple loops I put in, but it does not revert back to being fast. It's nothing big, but since dealing with 1000+ excel files a day, I'd rather not do that by hand.

how many infinite loops vb.net can support without dragging down the system? I know, infinite loops are poor design, but it works.

Can't Get The Program To Work - Randomly Takes Characters?

Nov 20, 2009

I am not recieving any errors, but the program is not doing what I had expected. I wish to make a program that randomly takes characters (well, not completely randomly. I used the table of letter frequency from wikipedia and included that data in my program by figuring out the max for the random numbers from the percentages in the wikipedia chart.) and adds them to a long list of characters ands saves the file every 5 minutes. I have calculated the timer interval so that the number of miliseconds shown is equal to 5 minutes. I am getting the textwindow, and it is showing (rather rapidly, as I need it to be) a long random list of characters (including spaces). The problems are (A) I am having difficulty saving the text as a file. You'll find the code that is supposed to do that at the bottom. The other problem I am having is once so many characters are added, the ones at the top start disappearing. I would scroll to the top, and each time I did so the letters at the top had changed (this is all during the same test), but I need all characters to be stored when the file saves. Granted, I haven't actually seen one of the saved files as I have not figured out how to make that work. One other thing, not sure if it's important, I haven't run a published version yet. I've only been running the debug builds. Does that affect how it handles actions with files?

Dim X, Y, contents As Primitive
Sub Main()[code].......

Writing A Program Which Takes One Item From Each Of Two Lists?

Jun 11, 2011

I'm writing a program which takes one item from each of two lists and combines the items in one of three ways selected by the user. The results of the process are provided in either a summary form or a detailed form, again selected by the user. As it's currently developing, this program will contain six subroutines covering each of the six combinations of user selections, which are stored in three Booleans. Selection of the appropriate subroutine is done through traditional "if then else" coding. If I understand OO and Visual Basic (Express 2008) correctly, I could make the subroutines into different variations of one method, which when invoked would automagically use the correct coding depending upon the settings of the Booleans / properties. Assuming this is correct, the problem is that I have no idea how to actually set up code like this.
