Total Beginner Attempting To Make A Game

I had this incredibly ambitious goal to make a video game and so I am teaching myself/relying on kindness and knowledge of others as I go along. So far I have learned a lot, however needless to say, this is a monstrously difficult challenge, however one that I am very passionate about completing. The idea is that I am making a trading card style game and I was hoping that I could continue to use this thread and your kindness to keep me going whenever nessecessary throughout this challenge.So, here is where I am now. (Please forgive me if i have posted too much details/not enough details. Since I am new, I am not sure what information you need to help me. This will be corrected as time goes by and I learn more)I have created a card class with two properties. name and picture with name As String, and picture as PictureBox. the constructor looks like this: [code]
My next goal(and where I am currently stuck) is making i so that when the user clicks on one of the items in the listbox, a picture of the appropriate card(saved in a pictureBox of its own on a different form, and referenced in the card via the picture element) will be placed inside the empty picture box on the deckPage.

Im using Visual Basic 2008.Okay I got all the design, and everything set up, even the hangman body parts coming on the screen and stuff. So my problem is creating the BLANKS, the underscores "_", and replacing them with a letter...
I was thinking creating Lables which i have no idea how to dynamically. Then giving each label name the letters they belong to, and everytime the user gets the rigth letter they get replaced.

I am just for learning purposes trying to develop a one player text based game.
I have a rich text box (GameWindow)
I have a text box (InputWindow)
I have a button (InputButton)
and a bunch of labels that aren't really important
I have two questions first is easy probably. How do i get InputWindow to respond to me hitting enter when text is in it?

I am attempting to make a form public. I've start out with this class:[code]I can see the stupid form thru intellisense, but when this code is run I'm getting a null reference exception. I believe this is because the stupid form has not been initialized. I thought that placing 'new' in my class definition would initialize the form.

Im trying to make a basic Client/Server. The server can handle multiple clients and each client can send /recieve messages from the server.It works fine with just 1 client. but as soon as i connect with a second client. The first one no longer works. Anything sent from the first client is ignored by the server and when running the server in debug mode it gets errors from the client 1 stream.
Its as if the server will only hold one stream at a time and whenever another client joins the other streams are shut but the new client works fine. Even though i never close a stream.

Edit: FINALLY FOUND IT! Stupid mistake i forgot to put the ClientN variable up by one for each new client.So i was creating a new space in the array but erasing the first slot for the new client

im trying to make a game in visual basic in which your character can move around, jump, and kill things. I can get the picture box with the character to move and everything is fine. but i did run into one problem. when the character moves over a tree (or something) you can see the gray backround of the character as i made in paint. how do i make the backround of the picturebox transparent?

I am trying to make a game which basiclly lets you shoot ducks. i have a picture as a background (set as form image) i then have picturebox's with ducks flying flying around you shoot them the disapear etc.
My problem is the image. i have a picture of a duck and a blue square round it. and i would liketo make it transparant because birds dont fly with blue squares.

Im attempting to make a "Licensing" system, but I dont know where to start. I know I would need some sort of "database". Heres the basic idea of what I would like my program to turn out. I need to make a matching card game in VB 2010. i have generated my cards but now need to show the cards for 10 secs then change the cards to (AppPath & "Cards ed.png"). then when a user clicks on the card the card will flip over.*How would i set a timer to turn all my cards into*(AppPath & "Cards ed.png") after 10 secsbut still have the values from the array and when i click the cards they flip over (from red card to numbered card)

The pay rates for the project are:
a. Level 1 - $10.00
b. Level 2 - $12.00
c. Level 3 - $14.00
d. Level 4 - $16.00
e. Benefit Deduction Rate - 0.10
f. Overtime Factor - 1.5
For ease of program maintenance, all of the above rates and factors must be stored in module level constants. All references to pay rates in the program must refer to the module level constants.
When the Calculate button is clicked:
a. The value in the Hours text box must be validated to insure that it is numeric value greater than zero.
1. If the value is not valid, a message box must appear as shown below and the user must be offered the option to continue processing or quit the program.
2. If the user chooses to continue processing, the focus must be set to the Hours text box.
3. If the user chooses to quit, the program must close immediately.
b. If the value is valid, the program must calculate and display the total pay in the Total Pay label.
1. The pay rate is determined by which Job Grade radio button is checked.
2. For hours less than or equal to 40, the total pay is the hours times the pay rate.
3. For hours greater than 40, the total pay is 40 hours times the pay rate plus the hours in excess of 40 hours times the pay rate times the Overtime Factor.
4. If the Full Time radio button is selected, the total pay must be reduced by the Benefit Deduction Rate.
5. The value displayed in the Total Pay label must be formatted with a dollar sign and with two decimal
places.
6. The focus must be set to the Hours text box.

I am working with VB 2008. I want to be able to run this program say in N: and it will show me in an excel sheet the following:
Folder Path Size(GB) Count of Files
N:Clients 0.53 308
where clients contains subfolders and files and the size is the total of all those files within each folder and the count is the total within each folder also.
This works fine as it is but i have to select one by one the top level folders and some of them are huge so it takes forever to give me an answer.
1) I would like to see in my spreadsheet the following by only select the network drive n:
Folder Path Size(GB) Count of Files
N:Clients 0.53 308
N:Software 10.7 15430
N:Billing 0.98 105
2) I would also like to know if this is the faster method.
3) I tried adding a progress bar so that the user can have an idea of how much this will take but i had to remove because it was not working.
4) I would like to see the folder name, size of folder and count of files in the listview.

I'm trying to make a 2D game in VB. As a first step I'm going to make a playing field (a form) on which I will put a character. The character should be able to move up, down, left, and right when you press the arrow keys. How do I start off with this and what should I start off with learning?
I already know the basics in how to make normal apps with buttons, text boxes, labels and so on but I don't quite get how I should start off with something like this.Also I wonder about XNA and VB.Net. Can you use them together or is XNA only for C#? I found some stuff while googling suggesting that XNA for VB.Net had been released.

I want to learn visual basic, what book or books are the best to take me from beginner to intermediate?Would it be more advantageous to go through VB 2008 or VB2010 tutorials first or should i start with a book before going through VB2008 or VB2010 tutorials?I am comfortable with Sequel (SQL) language, learned on the job and am at the advanced level of Excel/Access writing formulas functions,etc. the next logical step is to learn VB.

When my picHero enter a room where a picEnemy exists I should make the picEnemy follows picHero no matter how it moves up, down, right, left and as picHero is moving 5 px i want to make the picEnemy moves 4 px. I've tried to do use a condition as

I am making a simple blackjack game for school.It involves using object arrays and for next loops.I have 5 labels for the player, and 5 labels for the dealer. I have both their totals displayed on the form. I also have a deal, hit and stand button. I also need to follow the rules of if the dealer >= to 17 they must stand and if the dealer is < 17 they must hit. Does anybody have any suggestions on how i can code the dealers turn.I already made it so the player clicks hit and when he/she is done clicks stand. This is my stand button so far:

I am trying to create a program that calculates the prices of different payment methods of a buffet.The program requirements are simple. The buffet start in 1/7/2011 and ends 31/8/2011.
