View 4 RepliesI have spent the past week trying to get my copy of Visual Studio 2010 Professional to work on my Windows 7 Professional 64-bit laptop, with no avail.
Every time I try to create a new form using Visual Basic, an error message saying that Microsoft Resource File To COFF Object Conversion Utility has stopped working, and I cannot even run the new form to see if my coding is correct.
I have managed to find that it has something to do with the cvtres.exe file, but after a solid hour of research, I have found numerous others with a similar problem, but no solutions.
I have done registry scans, reinstalled Visual Studio about 3 times and have done many other suggested fixes that have done nothing but waste my time.
i am using Visual Studio 2008 Professional SP1, i need some help with the syntax error. Below is a full part of the coding appear syntax error. The program stop working at "cmd.ExecuteNonQuery()".
[Error Message: Syntax error (missing operator) in query expression 'Product_Amount='.]
Temporary1.Text = CInt(ProductAmount.Text) + CInt(StockAmount.Text)
Dim cmd As New OleDb.OleDbCommand
cmd.Connection = con
cmd.CommandText = " UPDATE product " & _
[Code]...
Any advice that how to solve this problem cause by syntax error? well, i new in programming.
I've seen some aplications developed with VB.net 2008. The layout of the forms and the entire application is amazing..The toolbars, is like office 2007. All the forms have a blue color, instead the horrible grey of the VB.net How can I do this?
View 2 RepliesFirstly Merry Christmas everyone I have been asked by a family member to create an application, but one thing that I have decided that I should do with this application is make the UI more professional.Up to now I have been creating applications which when I need more information I would open up a new form, but I would like to create an application which all is within the main form.
After researching this I think the solution for this is to have the different bits in different panels and then only show the relevant panels at a particular time.But the problem I am having is getting my head around the problem with all the code. Using the panels method all the code would be in the main form, which when you have only a small amount of code then that would be fine but I'm thinking that with a larger application would make that a little more difficult as you may have hundreds of different panels.
So while I will be using OOP, so there wouldn't be much business logic code on the form, there would still be a lot.So I am wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how I should go about doing this, if I'm using the wrong method then I would like to know what the more appropriate method would be.
I have VS2005 Team Edition Database Professional installed on my laptop along with VS Team Edition Database Pro, not a problem so far. When I installed the VS2008 we were using SQL Server 2005 as your databases so when asked to the database for database projects I selected my SQL 2005 installation. Now we have moved some of your databases (all new projects) to SQL 2008. When I try and create a Database Schema compare I get an error on Field types (we decided to use Date data type for one field instead of DateTime). I have since installed SQL 2008 Express so that I can create the projects in the 2008 version of SQL Server.

I've had 2008 express on this PC since it came out -- I basically have ONE important project that now is being troublesome.
Just had an "unhandled exception" and "configuration system failed" -- errors I've never received before and I've just made minor changes to the program.
For one, I was thinking about a fresh install of 2010 express (but remember some real problems when I upgraded from 2005, so ??) be afraid ? very afraid?
ALSO --
What are the mandatory files I need to save in a project folder?
If I delete the bin and obj folders (plus?) and let it write new ones will that sometimes cure some problems?
What is a good way to SAFELY keep all your hard work but get rid of possible clutter and ?

In VB6 I have drawn lines on a picturebox and if I display another form the lines remain (I haven't drawn them in the paint event).In vb2008 doing the same the display is erased when another form is displayed.How can I reproduce the vb6 functionality in vb2008?
View 1 RepliesI have an old VB6 project converted into VB2008 express. It contains a datagrid control called AxMSDataGridLib.AxDataGrid. This is probably legacy control from previous VB versions, am I right?
The application reads data to this grid using ADO and it works most of the time. It is supposed to be read only but I cannot parametrize it correctly and sometimes when I exit the application I get an exception. Now, I seriously lack skills of this IDE and .net framework since I don't know how to get more info about the exception. The exception is just a messagebox saying something like "Key column invalid or not sufficient. Update changed too many columns". This exception comes from this datagrid.
Now, since there's a high probability that this is an old control and I cannot get the exception handled, I was thinking to upgrade it to .net DataGridView. Does anyone know if upgrading this old AxDataGrid to .net DataGridView is possible and how to do it?
I am abit afraid to just delete the old control and replace it with new since the application works and I am not attached to any source control (for reverting changes). Maybe it's possible to make a copy of this project with another name and safely play with it?
I have been using VB6 forever, but I need to to create new app versions for Vista/7, and beyond. My employer bought Visual Studio 2005 Pro a few years back, but i have never opened it.What would be the best upgrade step for me from VB6? Is 2005 adequate, or 2008, or 2010?
We primarily create apps for building and hardware controls, monitoring, logging, and communications. Will be using MySQL in the cloud with apps too.
I am running Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Professional on a Windows 7 system.While working on a visual basic exercise in chapter 4 of the Microsoft Visual Basic 2008 Step by Step book on the MyMenu program I added a Toolstrip to my form and then I was trying to perform the add OpenFileDialog and ColorDialog controls to the component tray as described at the bottom of page 111 under Using Dialog Box Controls. I could never get the controls to appear in the component tray as instructed in the book.
I added a toolstrip to the form. According to my instructions I should be able to click on the Open file icon on the toolstrip to select it and then click anywhere else on the form. When I do that, the OpenFileDialog should appear on the component tray where I can then select it to enter code. This however does not happen.The only way I was able to get them to appear in the component tray was by opening the Menu program supplied on the DVD under chapter 4, selecting both of the above controls on the component tray, right clicking and then press copy. I then closed the Menu program and opened the MyMenu program that I created and then I was able to paste the two object controls to the component tray.
I went back to the original Menu program to see if I was able to place any other controls on the component tray by following the instructions in the book but was not able to. I also tried the same thing with MyMenu and it also still would not work.I have been unable to find anything that might explain why the component tray does not work as explained. Perhaps there is some setting somewhere that needs changed, but all searches have been unsuccessful.
PS. I have entered this on one of the other MicroSoft forums and although it has gotten multiple views I have not yet received any feedback.I also get the following error: Cannot add component of type 'ToolStripButton' to container of type 'form'.
I have a Visual Basic 6 program that I would like to update to Visual Basic .NET I am running Windows 7 Professional and have downloaded and installed Microsoft Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition. The problem I have encountered is that when I open my VB6 project file (.vbp) the Upgrade Wizard does not open. Instead, a list of references, objects and forms from my project appear. Is there any other way to run the wizard? Or am I missing something?
View 4 Replieshow I can implement my calendar with VB .net express 2008 and MSSQL 2008 Express. How do I get it to work with datasets, binding source etc.If I go to Properties>settings my connection string is:

and I have a table with fields:-
CalendarID
Subject
Location
Purpose

I can Add the event to the calendar I have the necessary items on my form linked to my table and I can save them to my table:
Me.Validate()
Me.CalendarTableBindingSource.EndEdit()
Me.TableAdapterManager.UpdateAll(Me.CalendarDatabaseDataSet)
But I cant keep the event displayed on my calendar when I close it and open it again.
I'm just using the default SQL Server Express in my vb 2008 express edition as my database server for my database operation. When I tried to update the records on my table I got a runtime error which indicates the error on this line 'myCommand.ExecuteNonQuery()'and it highlights a yellow background on it. The runtime error says "SqlException was unhandled: An expression of non-boolean type specified in a context where a condition is expected, near 'Number'. ".

I tried to start using VB 2010 Express with a program I originally developed with VB 2005 Express that I moved to VB 2008 Express successfully a couple years ago. It uses a database file (*.mdf) that is on the computer ( not out on a server). When attempt to run the program in debug mode, I get the following error "An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file C:Documents and SettingsTomMy DocumentsQuizzing StuffQuestion Database 2010QuizQuest ionGameQuizQuestionGameinReleaseQuizQuestionDB.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share."
I first made a copy of the entire project folder that was working in VB 2008 Express and gave it a different name. In VB2010 I opened the project in the copied folder and it said it successfully converted the project. I am able to open the Data Source inthe Designer and see the database structure as I expect. I think the project is still using SQL Server 2005 Express (because it is what is checked in the list of prerequisites on the Publish tab).
Note, I have programmed off and on for many years, but fairly new to using databases and SQL Server.
Here is the scoop: I am trying to make a user account SQL database work with Visual Basic 2008 Express for login purposes, i.e. usernames & passwords. Plan is to host this server so people can login to use the the application and verify they have a valid account. I would like to host all the account information in SQL due to the possiblity of hundreds of users at any given time. I also need the ability to add data to the database for users registering for the first time. The SQL server will need to be able to access the SQL Server databases remote via WAN.
View 1 RepliesI am trying to re write a VB6 program using MS Access, many years ago, using VB 2010 express and SQL server 2008 R2 Express. I have a database with several tables, which I created using the designer. I am able to connect to the database and select data and display it in textboxes etc in vb code. What I have not been able to in code is to INSERT rows DELETE rows or UPDATE any data in the tables. I can do any of these operations using the Query Designer, but I want to do it in code. I can post some code if necessiary, but I thought it might just be some property that I had not set in the designer.

I'm using VB 2008 Express for our College Project. I'm also running SQL Server 2008 Express and have installed SQL Server Management Studio and used it to create my database. Both software have been installed and running locally. I'm trying to connect to the database from VB 2008 Express. Database connection wizard have 3 options:

I have SQL 2008 Express and Visual Basic 2008 Express runing on XP Professional SP2. When I select add new data source from VB I don't have the option to connect to SQL Server 2008 express to get at the to SQL Server Database. I also notice that the OLE DB connector is not availble as a data connector. Can somebody please confirm that VB 2008 Express can connect directly to SQL Server 2008 Express and how I can achieve it.
