User Settings XML Serialization Of An Object?

Jul 17, 2009

I am trying to save a custom object as a user setting in a VB.net app. This object consists of a List(Of Pair(Of String, Object)). Pair is a custom class which has two read/write properties (a String and an Object).

If I put simple types like int, string, datetime as the second value of my pair, the setting is saved without any problem. But if I try to put something more complex, like a list, there seems to be a problem during serialization and my setting is not saved.

String values in my pairs are serialized like this:

<value1>Priority_1</value1>

Object values are serialized with a special attribute:

<value2 xsi:type="xsd:int">2</value2>

Seems like values of type Object are serialized differently, to "remember" what is the real type of the object. Why can't it do the same for more complex types like List(Of T)?

Storing Settings For A .NET Windows Service: Service Property Settings, Serialization?

Aug 5, 2010

I am working on a .NET Windows Service where I am trying to store settings that will be used when the service is started and while it is running. I have searched through posts on SO and found that using the Settings in the properties of the project is great for use with console and winforms applications. However, Google and SO are silent when it pertains to storing these settings with a windows service.

XML Serialization Of Object With Other Object Inside .net

Nov 29, 2010

I'm trying to XML-serialize a class the properties of which I use to format a document.Basically, it is a class for the document's header and another class for its rows. url...In this class diagram, the class I want to serialize is ExcelPrintCorte that inherits its methods from ExcelCabec and has a private member ExcelPrintDocumento (and a public method to get it).My purpose is to XML-serialize ExcelPrintCorte and save the inherited properties' values and also the properties' values of ExcelPrintDocumento. I followed many guides to XML-serialize an object but it saves nothing but: [code] So, what am I doing wrong? Or is what I'm trying to do not possible with XML serialization?

Application.Settings VB 2005 - Save Arrays Using The Settings System Object

Jan 14, 2009

I just wondered if you can or can't save arrays using the settings system object. There seems to be no way of entering it at designtime. It seems implied you cannot create new user settings.subobjects at runtime. I'm looking to find the easiest way to save a populated array of PictureBox's. If the only way is a self/custom made/managed .ini file then I need to know so i can start on that but I was hoping to use some of all this phaff in the new frameworks usefully.

Is there any way to create an XmlSerializer that stores along with the serialized data the data type, then when deserializing, it automatically identifies the type of the serialized object and creates an object of that type (returned as object).

I am rewritting my application to conform to ms standards. We used to save all settings to registry for user settings, servername, size and locations.so we are now saving them into My.Settings app.config the only problem is that each time there is an update clickonce will isntall the newupdate but now all settings are loist and user has to save everything all over again..

I am trying to follow the book here but it seems i keep getting stuck somewhere. registry has worked fine for years but i understand we must move on, but if stuff like this happens then i just wasted a long time converting all code to conform for it to not work..

Serialization Fails Because A Form Is Handling A Custom Object's Event

Aug 12, 2009

My application's binary serialization was working well up to today (this is not a released app yet - still in development). I have a "Project" class that is the top-level class of a hierarchy of other classes related to its function. And before you think it, yes, all of those classes are marked as serializable. Infact, they all were being serialized before today.

I have one event on the Project class that assists in informing when the project's save status has changed (i.e. new, modified, saved). This event was added today along with some events on the other classes that filter up to the Project class (the project needs to be told when its objects have been modified). I unfortunately added all of this at the same time so I can't provide any incremental details as to when it stopped working, but when I try to save the project through my binary formatter it tells me that my main form is not marked as serializable. Well, yeah... of course it isn't! it shouldn't need to be because there is no member of my classes that even mentions the form. But for some reason handling the Project's event on the form triggers this error.

Serializing the form is not a solution. Neither is not being able to handle my Project events. If I comment out the handler it works fine -- and I don't even have to remove the WithEvents keyword on my form's Project variable. Now that I write that I'm speculating that it may have to do with the event being raised as a result of the serialization (occurs when the save button is clicked).

VS 2010 - My.Settings - Can't Find File Which Reflects Changes To User Settings

Apr 15, 2011

1. I can't find the file which reflects changes to user settings. This might be because I just can't find it (I can see a bunch of user.config files but they are all empty - weird!), or...

2. I'm not actually saving them when I think I am.

Regarding 2. - do I need to invoke

Is this all I need? And if so, why are my user.configs empty?

VS 2008 - Error With Arraylist In My.Settings - Object Reference Not Set To An Instance Of An Object

The issue is when I try to add a new item to the ArrayList with the following code, it gives me an error:

vb Private Sub btnLabelAdd_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnLabelAdd.Click
Dim result As String = InputBox("New Filter Label:", "Label List")

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

I'm not really sure what I'm supposed to be doing with this. It's a new setting I just added and it's empty, so I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it or not. Anyone know what's going on and what needs to be done to get it to accept a value and not want to be "initialized"?

I read you have to have a sub new empty constructor which I have but don't know why else this would fail.First question is how to you do this. Second is there anyway to use a class inside the project as the target of the settings type or do you have to bring a in an external dll to do this every time? [code]

Wpf - Object Reference Not Set To An Instance Of An Object When Using Custom User Control

Feb 10, 2012

I have created a custom user control (JCUserControl), and I am using it in the Main Window. And my Main Window has no codebehind. I have this in the JCUserControl codebehind:

Private Sub ImmediateRadioButton_Checked(sender As System.Object, e As System.Windows.RoutedEventArgs) Handles ImmediateRadioButton.Checked
SomeTextBox.IsEnabled = False
End Sub

When I run it, it fails with the NullReferenceException. If I comment out the SomeTextBox.IsEnabled = false, it runs without any problems.

Edit: Found out that I could just check if the radio buttons are loaded before doing whatever I want to do.

Private Sub ImmediateRadioButton_Checked(sender As System.Object, e As System.Windows.RoutedEventArgs) Handles ImmediateRadioButton.Checked
If ImmediateRadioButton.IsLoaded Then
SomeTextBox.IsEnabled = False

Asmx Json Serialization Versus Wcf Json Serialization?

Nov 24, 2011

I have two experimental web services. One is an asmx contained within a .net web application. The other is a WCF service library being invoked from the web application. The asmx basically does everything I need, but I think WCF would be better, except that it doesn't do anything as I would expect after fiddling with the asmx service. For example, the same method behaves differently in each:

' ASMX
<WebMethod(BufferResponse:=True, EnableSession:=False)>
Function Test(aObject as Object) as Object
' object will have been successfully serializaed into a dictionary

Dispose Of Application Settings Object?

Dec 28, 2009

I have a custom settings file that I designed using the designer. In my form, I have a function that creates a new instance of this settings by using a dim statement. Then I add this new settings object to a hashtable. After I exit this function, I no longer have access to the settings object without using the hashtable to retrieve it. If I want to remove the object from the hashtable, I can do a simple remove but the settings object still exists somewhere in memory. How can I dispose of this object as well since it inherits from ApplicationSettingsBase and does not have a built in Dispose() function?

Asp.net - Use A Dictionary-like Collection As An Application Settings Object?

Jun 8, 2009

I'd like to store a set of key/value pairs in the application settings of my ASP.NET web app, but I'm not finding a straightforward way to do that. For example, these two questions tell me that StringDictionary etc. won't serialize to XML and suggest that I'll have to roll my own implementation. But it seems like this should be easier to do; after all, web.config is XML and < applicationSettings> is essentially a collection of key/value pairs, so it feels like I'm missing something obvious. Given my specific case below, do I really have to roll my own serialization, or is there an easier workaround?

The web app in question is a basic contact form that sends email to different recipients based on the value of a parameter; e.g. [URL]...The goal is to be able add or remove recipients (or change their addresses) by editing the web.config file so that I don't have to recompile and can easily maintain different configurations in test and production environments. For example:

// I can use something like this for the sender address SmtpMsg.From = New MailAddress(My.Settings.EmailSender)

// And then just edit this part of web.config to use different addresses in different environments.
<setting name="EmailSender" serializeAs="String"> <value>webcontact@exampledomain.com</value>
