Using Copy A File From Windows XP To Linux?
May 4, 2011
I have some simple vb.net code that I use to copy a file between 2 servers.
IO.File.Copy(fromFileName, toFileName, True) ' Overwrites existing files
That works fine when both machines are Windows XP.
What would I need to do differently if 1 of the machines happens to be a LINUX box?

I found a script online to copy some files whilst also displaying a progress bar to the user. I wondered if it was possible to automate this process so the file copy initiates as soon as the program launches and then closes once completed. VB is not my strong point as I usually code in c sharp.
Imports System.Collections.Generic
Imports System.ComponentModel
Imports System.IO
Public Class Form1

I am working on a backup utility for use with the mysql db. Because I need the actual backup to run regardless of if a user is logged on or not, I created the backup engine in a windows service.
Basically the backup engine checks to see if a backup job is scheduled to be run and if it is, it kicks off a mysqldump to do the backup. For sake of performance I am saving all backup jobs to the local c: drive then doing a file copy to the user defined destination.
Everything works fine except for the file copy. If the user selects a local resource to the computer it works fine. However, if a network drive is selected, I get an error that it cannot find the path.
I started thinking about it and believe this is expected since the backup engine is probably oblivious to whatever mapped drives that particular user has, i.e. the mapping process is done when someone logs in and my app is running at a lower level.
I started doing some research on this problem and found that some people are saying that windows services are oblivious of networks all together. This seemed a little odd to me so I thought I would bring the issue here.
Is a windows service truely unaware of network activity? How can I change the program to move the completed backups over to a network drive?

I have a program that uses IO.File.Copy to copy files from point a to point b. Its slow, which is fine because there rather large files. I was wondering if there is way to get an estimate time to copy a particular file(s).
Example: File a will take 1 hour to copy, File B will take 30 minutes to copy. Estimate Total Time: 1 hour 30 minutes.

I have a weird behavior when trying to copy a file with System.IO.File.Copy. The file never gets copied. More than that, the call doesn't generate an exeption!
I am using VB.NET, Framework 3.5. I'm trying to copy in C:Temp and I do have the privileges. Or at least I used to...

I have written a service to run an exe. What I have also tried to do is check if the file is present on the local computer, and if not copy it from a networked drive to the local computer.
If File.Exists("\\static1\software\testapp.exe") = True Then
File.Copy("\\static1\software\testapp.exe", "C:\Program Files\Testing\testapp.exe")
End If
I have previously ensured that the directory exists. When I run this as a service, it doesn't work. No errors are thrown up, but the file is not copied. When I put this into a windows forms application it works fine.
I have used:
Imports System.IO
In the header. why this won't work?
I have also tried:
My.Computer.Network.DownloadFile("\\static1\software\testapp.exe", "C:\Program Files\Testing\testapp.exe")
And that also does not work.I am trying to run this on Windows XP Professional.

I can get Visual Studio 2010 Professional to connect to a DB2 UDB database but I don't see any tables. I can hand code the sql and get data returned but I want to be able to drag and drop and use the power of the Studio. I've tried OLE and ODBC connections but I'm still missing something in the set up.

Copy Windows Form from projact A to project B This looks a trivial task, but using VB 2008 Express edition:
1 - If I click Solution - Add - Existing And hand pick the 3 form files (the .vb, the .resx and the .designer.vb) then I can see those 3 files as textfiles, not as a "real" VB form!
2 - I want to duplicate Form1 to create Form2 that is slightly different.

I have to develop a small application that will connect to a Linux server (scp on port 22), upload a file, and then execute the file. The first thing that came to mind was to call WinSCP from my app, but the initial connection will always prompt to accept the hostkey. When calling WinSCP from the commandline you can press a key to copy the hostkey to the clipboard, and then you can use it with the -hostkey switch to connect. Any thoughts on how I might do this in VB? It would have to look like this:
Attempt to connect via WinSCP
Copy hostkey to clipboard when prompted
Attempt to connect again using hostkey
I'm just not sure about #2. I would have to send a keystroke for the letter 'C' which causes the hostkey to be copied to the clipboard.

I'm trying to create a software in VB.Net to disable the following from a Windows 7 pc. Cut, copy, paste, rename, delete, open, print, share, create shortcut, open with, send to, properties. i want to give users the option of disabling them selectively/individually via checkboxes so those options will be disabled in the right-click of a mouse. I'm aware that to do so I must disable them from the Windows registry.
My problem is I don't know which is the right key to disable as the registry is so huge & some keys are similiarly named. say what are the exact key locations of the above-mentioned right-click functions in the Windows Registry ?
