Using Dataset Returned By Sql Statement In VB

I am returning to VB and coding after several years of trying to be out of coding :)
I would like in grabbing data retrieved from a SQL database call into an array of sorts so that I can quickly close the database connection. I am having some trouble remembering how to do this. Most of the posts I've found say to use the dataSet() functionality, but I do not have a table name for the structure to mimic. I am selecting from several tables on a remote server.

I have a model that returns a dataset to a view and builds a list. The crazy thing is that I have tested this code with IE, Safari on Mac and Windows, Chrome and Opera and all return data. However, on the iPad or iPhone, zero rows are returned from the dataset object. It seems that the model is in fact passing the dataset to the view. I am using jquerymobile to render the view for the iOS devices and have taken that out of the mix to test and it still doesn't work.

I am using Enterprise block and not able to figure this out.
I am using oracle procedure for inserting records into the database from my asp.net application in VB.net
Though it is inserting records as it should When I try to access the dataset returned I am not able to see the just inserted record details.
In my Oracle procedure I have Output Cursor which should return several column values from the just inserted record.

I have a dataset which creates a table adapter to the table I need. I call a query on that table adapter which returns the number of fields returned. In this case it's one field and will always be one field.. I am filling a variable with that query.. however instead of the fields returned I need the actual data.
This is how my current code sits...

Do I have to load this into a variable declared as a datatable then somehow call the column and row 0's value? If so how?

I run VS 2010 Premiuim version. I do a lot of data projects and wondered what option i have to setup concurrency if the returned object is a dataset and how do i do it? Does VS 2010 have any built in options for me to take advantage of?Or if anyone else has any other ways of doing this please advise or point me to any articles.

I want to know how to use the ASYNC CTP to manage the querying of a SQL Database with a SQL Select statement and use a SQLDataAdapter to fill in a DataSet. I have downloaded the VS2010 SP1 and the ASYNC CTP, I have also reviewed the videos on the MSDN site and the documentation included.

my program is "live" and my customer has troubles because it doesn't functioning as well as it should.I don't know what happen, did I changed something or not but suddenly data won't save to database from newly created forms. Beside this form I have additional 20 forms and everything is working like a charm and I use same code logic to save data to database. I tried to find myself what could be the reason, check by entering data directly to database table (works fine), check insert statement of dataset table (seems fine, too) and everything I could imagine. But now I ran out of ideas and I had to ask here.
Also, I added 3 fields to database table (nvarchar, int and decimal). All 3 of them allow nulls. I changed dataset and data entry form and now data won't insert if I dont enter values to int and decimal fields. Also, this decimal field doesn't accept 0 value if enter but if I assign value 0 from the code than it is ok. I'm not sure if I somehow changed concurrency and somewhere. I tried to find where I can change it but I couldn't find it. I use Visual Studio 2008 and Sql Server 2005 Express. Language vb.net.

I've only dealt with firing a single SQL statement at a SQLServer table and returning a single result... easy....
however....
is there a way to fire a dual sql command and load the results into respective tables within a dataset?.. I'm thinking something along these lines (this code of course does not work)

I am trying to work programmatically with a dataset. The tableAdapter was created by dragging and dropping the dataset on my form, and then deleting the binding navigator and dataviewgrid. The problem I am having is when I am trying to delete a record that is DBNull. The dataset.delete( ) call creates fields for each of the fields, along with their data type (say Description as String). but I get an error whenever the field has a DBNull value.
CourseTableAdapter.Delete(DBDataSet.Course.Item(1).CourseID, DBDataSet.Course.Item(1).CourseDescription)
The error is Throw New Global.System.Data.StrongTypingException("The value for column 'Description' in table 'Course' is DBNull."I do have Option Strict On, but the problem exists even if I turn it off.

I was convinced that If <expression> Then <statement [:statement]> Else [statements] in concrete form of If a = b Then SayHello() Else SayBye() End has sense. I read article on msdn on If-then-else, but I forgot why I was reading, so I concluded, that snippet above means this
If a = b Then HelloIsSaid : IsNotEnded Else ByeIsSaid : IsEnded But I have tested it now, and I see, that Else without statement is nothing more than decoration. It would be pretty good if it had function I described. Do you think its good request? Or do you know any circumstance where this Else has some function?

add an if statement and an exit statement to my do loop that exits when my future value (FV) is greater than 1000, then to change the exit statement to a continue statement so my loop will continue even though my fv is greater then 1000, point is to get this to run even though my if statement doesnt do anything. problem something wrong in my code and an exception error (xception of type 'System.OverflowException' occurred in mscorlib.dll)

I have code running in the Datatable.ColumnChanging event in my dataset. This dataset underlies a form and conventional drag/drop controls are in place for data entry.when the event triggers and runs, I am running code in the form that checks the dataset.HasChanges property. It is showing False. But this is immediately after the ColumnChanging event has been triggered.Okay, I see by others posts and MSDN that .HasChanges will only be true after moving off the row with the changed column. I have also noted lots of discussion about the advanced binding property of DataSourceUpdate Mode, but that does not address this issue.I guess I can do this by checking the state of the row for the binding source. Just seems odd that the event behind the dataset can be triggered and that does not change the dataset.HasChanges property.

I have tried everything I can to get beyond this error which shows below as <<<<< error here. It is trying to fill a dataset from a data adapter. If I change the SELECT statement to just SELECT * FROM xTable I get the correct number of records in each table. But anytime I try with a more complex statement I get the error message shown below which indicates System.Data.Common.DbDataAdapter.Fill(DataSet dataSet. I've completely erased all data and entered a new set of test data so I know there is no problem with relationships. Each table has primary key which is foreign key in other table. I have two Datagrids, One grid has all the customers garments on it with style number and contact length. The other grid has the users who have garment issued to them. the style number is in both grids. I need to loop through the users grid and say if the contract number is 1 from the first grid then the contract date on the second grid will be todays date + 365 days (year contract) I have looked at using a stored procedure and also a for each command but I am just getting stuck with it all. I'm writing something that will examine a function and rewrite that function in another language so basically if inside my function F1, i have this line of code var x=a.b(1) how do i break up the function body into symbols or "tokens"?I've searched around and thought that stuff in System.Reflection.MethodInfo.GetMethodBody would do the trick however that class doesn't seem to be able to have the capabilities to do what i want..dit 2:basically what I'm trying to do is to write a program in c#/vb and when i hit F5 a serializer function will (use reflection and) take the entire program (all the classes in that program) and serialize it into a single javascript file. of course javascript doesn't have the .net library so basically the C#/VB program will limit its use of classes to the .js library (which is a library written in c#/vb emulating the framework of javascript objects)

I have multiple datasets that I would like to combine into one. There is a common ID field that can be associated to each row. Calling Merge on the dataset will add additional rows to the dataset, but I would like to combine the additional columns. There are too many fields to do this in one query and therefore would make it unmanageable. Each individual query would be able to handle ordering to ensure the data is placed in the correct row.
For Example lets say I have two queries resulting in two datasets:
SELECT ID, colA, colB
SELECT colC, colD
The resulting dataset would look like
ID colA colB colC colD
1 a b c d
2 e f g h

ok, I've finally got my test database issues sorted out, however now I need to actually modify my existing report to add the two new fields from my test database. I have made a copy of the report so that I am not modifying the original. I have deleted the two old fields and now want to add my two new fields in there. In the Field explorer window, I see an object called "dataset1" and when I expand it, it is using a view that includes fields from the table that I added my two new fields to.
The problem I see here is that I have gone in and modified the view to include these two new fields in my test database - but again, they are not showing up as selectable fields here. I am just assuming that "dataset1" is somehow pointing to the live database again and that I need to change the datasource location.In my solution explorer, I see an object called "dataset1.xsd" but the properties of that do not tell me much about where it is actually pointing to...
