VB 2005 Direct Memory Access
Jun 10, 2012
I want to know if I can directly read or write values in the current process in a Visual Basic 2005 Windows application. Like *(DWORD*)(0x123456) = 1; in C++ will write the value 1 at the address 0x123456. So anyway to do the same in VB using only built in functions and not using ReadProcessMemory and WriteProcessMemory?

In VB 2005, I am calling a C++ DLL function that returns the address in memory and size in bytes of a jpeg image. How can I load that jpeg image directly from memory into a picture box in my VB form? I cannot afford to save it to disk first.

here's my problem.. i'm using a gridview control, and then i put a select column on the grid. My questions are, how to retrieve the data on one of the field in the gridview and then it will direct me to the another page.. (see example below)
[Code]...
once i click the "select" on the gridview, I will direct to another page(ex, Default.aspx) and then at the same time the value on "LastName" field of the corresponding row which i selected will display on the another page(ex, Default.aspx)

I'm making a VB.NET application with an SQL Server 2005 in the background. Naturally the user can not edit the database directly but will use a number of UI features to be able to add and modify the data.However, there are a few tables that should be easily accessible from the admin interface such as specific information about a vendor. What's the easiest way to let the user edit this data freely? One way would be to use a DataGridView but this could appear complicated to the user, plus I'm not sure exactly when to save the edited data back to the database.
The best way that I can think of is to create custom dialog boxes for adding, deleting and changing the information, but this seems like too much work for such a small feature.

I am trying to log the contents of an object to a text file. If I do a debug.print of the object itself in the immediate window, it prints all of the values of the object's properties:
?mDb.DatabaseOptions
{Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.DatabaseOptions}
AnsiNullDefault: False
...
UserData: Nothing
However, I can't seem to access this as a string in code due to a type mismatch. I assumed I could get this information using the .ToString method, but all that returns is the object description with none of the properties or values:
?mDb.DatabaseOptions.ToString
"Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.DatabaseOptions"

We have an application that has a memory leak. The leak occurs when we run batch processes that utilize objects in a COM library (ArcObjects by ESRI). It's not real noticable when the batch is small, but when it gets into several hundred interations the memory leak gets into the hundreds of megs.
We've looked over everything and made sure we're doing Using... End Using where possible. We've made sure all our objects implement iDisposable and explicitly dispose of their COM references in the Dispose method. We've put in explicit calls to the garbage collector. My development lead has fretted and pulled his hair out on this one for two years. Still the leak remains.
Today I noticed something strange. I ran a large batch process and the app had grown to several hundred megs in size. I had the task manager up with the app - looking at them at the same time. I moused over the 'close' button on the app and suddenly the app dumped about two thirds of it's RAM. Mind you - I didn't actually press the close button, just moused over it.
So something happened inside the app that caused it to clean itself up, but I don't exactly know what. If we could find out what happened maybe we could plug this leak.

I'm currently using an unmanaged library written in C++ and imported via <DLLImport()> to access a dos virtual device driver, and that works fine. However, I'd like to be able to do this via my .NET application (without requiring an accompanying DLL). So, I'm trying to write to the virtual dos device using the kernel32 API and WriteFile, however I receive the error: "Attempted to read or write protected memory."
Mapping to the device with DefineDosDevice and CreateFile (also in the kernel32 API) works fine and returns a valid file handle, however when I attempt to write to the file it fails. I've even tried marshaling the data to an unmanaged block of memory using InteropServices (AllocHGlobal and StructureToPtr) and then writing it from there, however I still receive the same error.

I'm building SQL statements with a bunch of values from a dataset. Obviously that gives some really long names to put inline or even in parameter. addwithvalue code so beforehand I just declare a bunch of variables with really short names and assign them to the DS's exact fields like: [code] but this way I'm putting all the data in the dataset into memory twice by copying it into a new variable, right? So I was thinking, if it's just a string variable representing a field on the dataset, why not declare it by reference so the variable is basically a handy nickname pointing to that field in the dataset.Will it even work to have a string declared by reference and connected to one value inside of a dataset? And if so, will that stop duplicating everything in memory? I forgot how to declare a variable as a reference to another variable instead of the normal way in VB.

I have spent quite a while trying to solve this problem.I would like to be able to decrypt a file using an old password, then encrypt the file with a new password in memory. I could easily write the unencrypted file to disk then encrypt the file with a new password, BUT I was trying to keep the unencrypted file from being written to disk. Could someone point me in the right direction?
Private Function ReEncryptFile(ByVal PathToFile As String, ByVal OldPassword As String, ByVal NewPassword As String) As Boolean End Function I've been using a cryptostream to decrypt the file, but I cant seem to figure a way to encrypt the crytostream afterwards (or convert it to a memorystream and (re)encrypt the memorystream)

Why does the code below cause a memory leak when executed? The error only happens when I use Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 or 2008 in vb.net language. If I use C # is, there is no problem.

dim factory as DbProviderFactory = DbProviderFactories.GetFactory("Oracle.DataAccess.Client");
Dim conexao As IDbConnection = factory.CreateConnection

I have a table in Access with two key fields (let's call them Item and Cust). These key fields *combined* are the primary key. So each record must have a unique Item and User combination. It can have a duplicate Item with other records, and a duplicate Cust with other records, but not a duplicate of both. Because my "primary key" is a combination of two fields, I can't make a primary key on the table in Access (it only supports one field as a primary key).
I have another table in SQLServer which also has Item and Cust, but in addition, is has several descriptive fields that give more details about the Item and Cust. I'm trying to use ADO.NET to bring in that SQL Server table and UPDATE some matching fields in Access with the descriptive fields. [Code]

I have some questions about bitmaps and such. I am using the IDXSurfaceFactory::LoadImage Method to load an image and now I want to access its memory buffer, so I can do some direct memory manipulation and copy the content to another buffer afterwards (no BitBlit!). I managed to successfully use LoadImage, but I have no idea how to retrieve the pointer to the memory buffer and other informations. I want to basically know everything about, how and where the image is stored in the memory buffer.
Does windows always load images as BGR regardless of its original format? if not, how can I find out if the loaded image is stored as BGR or RGB. How can I find out how many bits each color has? How can I find out if the image is stored y-reversed? And if you load an indexed png for example, with one color marked as transparent, how can I find out which color is used for transparency?

I have a VB.net 2005 app using the Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.dll version 11, deployed on a number of XP machines with Office 2003 installed. On one and only one machine I get the following error:Error -2147467261 Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt.The line which triggers the error is:
xlSheet.SaveAs(strPathXLS)
xlSheet has been previously defined by
Dim xlSheet As Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.Worksheet
This should save an Excel file in a folder on the desktop. I can save a file from Excel in that folder, and create a new Excel file in it from the right-click option. The app is working correctly on the development machine and at least 8 other XP boxes on site.All Office and dotNet 2 updates have been applied.Office and dotNet have been uninstalled and reinstalled to no effect.

I have a program in VB.NET 2005. At some point I have to open an Access2003-Application for getting data in it. I do that by pretending my program is a human user and let it do all the work in Access as a human user would do. Filling Fields, pressing buttons etc. I use the Primary Interop Assemblies for that. So far so good. That code is in use for over half a year now. In the last week I got Office 2007 installed on my machine. Of course I tested the installed version of my program if everthing still works. Every test was succesfull. But if I do the same tests in Visual Studio it always crashes.
All I get is this Errormessage: {"Das COM-Objekt des Typs "Microsoft.Office.Interop.Access.FormClass" kann nicht in den Schnittstellentyp "Microsoft.Office.Interop.Access._Form3" umgewandelt werden. Dieser Vorgang konnte nicht durchgefhrt werden, da der QueryInterface-Aufruf an die COM-Komponente fr die Schnittstelle mit der IID "{66B22FB4-F70E-4F03-A00A-F76E9ADBBF10}" aufgrund des folgenden Fehlers nicht durchgefhrt werden konnte: Schnittstelle nicht untersttzt (Ausnahme von HRESULT: 0x80004002 (E_NOINTERFACE))."}
For all who can't read german:
"Microsoft.Office.Interop.Access.FormClass" can't be converted in to "Microsoft.Office.Interop.Access._Form3" ... Interface is not supported.
Code I use:
Dim access As Microsoft.Office.Interop.Access.Application = Nothing
.
.
.
access = New Microsoft.Office.Interop.Access.Application()
[CODE]...
The Error occurs when I try to access any property of "access.Forms("frmTest")"

I have two Access database, say database One.mdb and Two.mdb. I want to use VB2005 to export tblCustomer from One.mdb to Two.mdb, and replace the existing tblCustomer in Two.mdb, during run time. I basically want to simulate the export function that is available in MS Access (which can export one table from one Access database to another) with VB2005 during run time. I can think of a way by querying the table to a dataset and then delete everything on the other database before filling the table in that database with the dataset. However, there should be something simpler and faster than that, shouldn't it? Any idea?

Im getting a problem with one of my programs I have made in visual basic.NET where it gives me a memory error when i debug the program in the IDE. the exact error is this: "Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt". My program basically has a few forms with text fields on that get their text values from an access database on the same hard drive. Im wondering if im doing something wrong because my program just seems to eat up memory whenever it does anything. For example I have one form that has a combobox on it and when you change the drop down list selection it retreives a few strings from the database and puts them into the relevant text boxes, if you keep changing the selection then the memory usage (in task manager) just keeps going up and up. occasionally I get the error mentioned above when debugging but in my built version of the program it throws an exception everytime the memory usage gets past 49K.
Also I noticed when debugging in the "immediate window" frame I get the following message often:A first chance exception of type 'System. Invalid OperationException' occurred in System.Data.dll...Do I need to somehow be "releasing" the memory that is used to gather data once it becomes redundant?
