Jan 1, 2010I have created a Class Library project to create a VB.net 2005 DLL file. I am trying to access My.Settings in this class library project and not able to. How would I do this?

Class Library Config Files And My.Settings
May 19, 2010Say I have a Class Library project with its own .dll.config, and a forms application. I want to confirm that it is impossible to reference the .dll.config file from the .exe.config file and still use My.Settings.
For example: I have SomeClassLibrary project, with SomeSetting that I can access through My.Settings.SomeSetting. I also have SomeFormsApp project. This is what I want my SomeFormsApp.exe.config to look like:

From my readings, this seems impossible. I either need to copy the content of SomeClassLibrary.dll.config into SomeFormsApp.exe.config, which is tedious and error prone when copying from multiple class libraries, or I need to use ConfigurationManager, which bypasses My.Settings and its typed, Intellisensed goodness.
Class Library Getting Settings From Own App.config NOT The Application's?
Jun 2, 2009I'm having trouble with my application settings and I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this.
I have a Librabry with a connection string. In the project for the library it has its own app.config:

IDE :: Vb 2008 Class Library Settings Disappear?
Mar 12, 2011Solution has 3 Class Libraries and 1 Windows Form application projects. For no apparent reason, one of the Class Libraries keeps loosing its Settings. These are primarily configuration strings. When I try to add them back in the IDE, they disappear again without explanation.

Jul 8, 2010A while back, I wrote my own settings provider because I was having problems persisting settings in a class library. (Note - I had no problems persisting settings from an application).Today, I just did a test of persisting class library settings and it worked, without my custom provider.The test is:
(1) Create a class library
(2) Add a setting - 'Name'
(3) Add a class with a public shared property 'Name' that reads and writes to the setting 'Name'.
(4) Create an application that references the class library, and use the shared property to read and write the 'Name' setting.
I'm sure that before the 'Name' setting would persist while the application was open but after I closed it and re-opened it, the setting would revert to the default.This is not happening now and I'd like to be sure that I was being an idiot before and not an idiot now.
ETA: I've noticed that the first time I create a test app, change the setting, close, and reopen, the setting is not persisted. Subsequently it is. May be I gave up after one try before. Any ideas why it's not persisted the first time?
ETA2: As an example, I have a class library called 'MyLibrary' and a test application called 'MyApp'. I do the steps 1-4 above, and below are the contents of the user.config file found at C:Documents and SettingsUser NameLocal SettingsApplication DataMyAppMyApp.vshost.exe_Url_vi5gjcooahbdm2ma3dcay0mkexu2suul1.0.0.0. Note: I did not touch the settings in MyApp;-

And I willing to store the url strings in the class library, but I do not know how to keep them to be more visible from people who open the dll by using with hex editor. Can't Access Class Library Methods / Properties When Referenced As A DLL
Oct 15, 2009I've created a class library and built a dll (release build). I've then referenced the DLL in another project (I've tried several). I can see the namespace and classes in Object Browser and I can declare instances of the classes but I cannot use or see any of the methods or properties! there is no IntelliSense whatsoever and calling the methods manualy results in a 'Declaration expected' error.
Within the class library solution I have a unit test project referencing the class library project which works all works fine (and all the tests pass).
Can anyone provide any pointers to what might be going wrong here? I've built plenty of dlls in the past and have had no trouble referencing them at all.[code]...
Asp.net - Getting Configuration Settings From Web.config/app.config Using Class Library

Mar 1, 2012I am trying to access appSettings using the following syntax and I have used it before in my many website projects but not in a class library project. In this class library project I cannot even access the AppSettings Keys. Is there any way I could access the AppSettings Key from my class? Is the class library project's app.config or project structure behave in a different way?

Jan 14, 2009I just wondered if you can or can't save arrays using the settings system object. There seems to be no way of entering it at designtime. It seems implied you cannot create new user settings.subobjects at runtime. I'm looking to find the easiest way to save a populated array of PictureBox's. If the only way is a self/custom made/managed .ini file then I need to know so i can start on that but I was hoping to use some of all this phaff in the new frameworks usefully.

Feb 14, 2012I have a class library in VB.NET that does a NET-envelope for an USB device driver.There is only one function of that driver that I could not envelope in a traditional class, but I had to put it in a Windows Service as described here:Sharing a class property (field) between applications.The Windows Service works fine, but I have now two projects for my NET-envelope: the one with the class library, the second with the windows service and I do not like the idea to maintain two distinct projects for the same driver.Is it a good practice (or even if possible) to add a windows service class to a normal class library (without creating its own project as described in the vb tutorial)?I know, in any case I should create a separate setup only for the windows service, but in this way I could have together all the classes that envelope my usb device driver in only one project.

Mar 31, 2011I've got a program where the insert/update SQL was created with the values coded directly into the SQL string. I've changed this to use the Command's Parameters.AddWithValue method and all worked well. I'm now in the process of separating the data access code out into it's own class. I've got the Select code working using a DataSet in the form that I pass ByRef to my data class so it can populate or refresh it. My sticking point is in how to pass the parameters for the Insert/Update commands to the class since from the form I no longer have access to a Command object. Do I need to make the Command object in the data access class available to the form?

May 18, 2010I've createda vb.net class library where I've defined a number of small classes... nothing complicated, just working with strings, sending emails, etc.In another project, I reference the class library and I'm seemingly able to create an instance ofone of tclasses - intellisense shows me all of the plic properties, methods, etc... all looks perfect. No compile errors at all, nothing b gumdropsand lollipops.When I run the app I'm working on that references the class library, it fails at the point where I'm creating an instance of the class and gives me a vague exception, "System.TypeLoadException".

My problem is when I try to run the program: No errors of syntax.
What I must do? I need to right click in solution explorer add new item->add->class and copy here this code?
After I write the code I chose from the vb menu: Build->Build Solution_name
Before writing the code I choose File->New->and selected class library then save all to save as a project.
Or class library is only a dll file that runs with a windows forms application. (that is added after i write the code for write library).

Oct 18, 2010I have two projects; A and B, where B needs to use some classes that are in project A. Hence, I added B to A's solution, and in B I added a reference to project A.
Is that sensible? Or should I rather put those classes in a class library?
I see that if I further want to open form/program B from a menu option in project A, then A needs a reference to B. Which would not be possible if B already had a reference to A. However if I use the class library for the common classes, then it's ok as B doesn't need the A reference.
Does this sound logical? It would be nice to know what are typical reasons for putting projects in the same solution, and if it's advised to use libraries aggressively to refactor common code between two projects, even if it's just a couple of classes.. Yet I've never made my own library, so a bit unsure on when to use it.
ConnectionString In Class Library

I've literally just dumped all the classes into the class library project and as expected I've got a ton of errors to fix. My main problem at the moment is the connection string. Currently I have this (which is obviously not going to work):

Oct 7, 2011I'm in the midst of developing a class library DLL for a third party application. On my machine, the developers machine, things are going along smoothly. I can compile/build and my DLL is loaded, and thus works as expected.
I've been copying the contents of the Release directory from C:Solutions...Release to C:ProgramDirectory. I realize now that my DLL is loaded into memory from the Release folder, and not the folder I copied it to.The point being of course, I want to distribute this third-party add-in to my users. And sure enough when I try that, presumably the DLL isn't loaded into memory and thus not available to the user, like it is on my machine.
I tried the first obvious thing and registering the DLL on the user's machine, but that failed."The module "..." was loaded but the entry-point DLLRegisterServer was not found." It's apparent I am missing some key step or caveat when it comes to developing this class library.
Class Library Events?

After that, i`ve created a class library in VB.NET and added this C# component and a couple of buttons to the library (creating another component now with buttons). So far, so good.The problem is: when i use this final component (vb.net class library), i want to link all MouseClick Events of its own components (buttons and C# component). In other words, when i add this final class library to my VB solution, it has its own MouseClick event. But when i click inside it doesnt raise the click event unless i do not click in the buttons or in the C# component inside it. I want to raise this event in the application wherever i click (inside or outside its own components).

Sep 18, 2009My objective is to take a .vb class file that is used on multiple local applications/web sites and convert it to a .dll file that would would be deployed to the servers that we use.The code all works, I can build my class library project with Visual Studios 2008 Pro and end up with a DLL.I can then drag and drop the DLL into any application or website and use it successfully What I'm missing is how to compile it correctly so it will do two things;
1. Get it to show up as a .NET component
2. Get it to NOT scream at me when I try to reference it.
I think part of my problem is that I've been looking up assemblies and dll's when maybe I should have been looking at component authoring.No, I don't want to just stick with the drag and drop into local bins. I might as well just copy and paste the original .vb at that point.

Jun 30, 2008I was dangerously close to high-jacking another thread, so I thought I should create my own. We make class libraries so we won't duplicate code, but what about settings? I have a large solution that I've created a project in for common material, which includes an app.config. The problem is that a class library isn't an "app" so my functions can't get to the values. How do I get around this?
