View 2 RepliesI use Environment.NewLine, my colleagues use vbCrLf.When I'm doing a code review for them I want something that I can point to to say "use Environment.NewLine instead of vbCrLf"
Or, am I just peeing in the wind, and it doesn't really matter ?
To set the text of the excel cell to an multiline text i have used "sometext" & Environment.NewLine & "sometext".but it adds an space at the end of the first line
View 3 RepliesEnvironnent.NewLine seems to be resolving to two spaces " " (as are vbCrLf and ControlChars.CrLF). Using StringBuilder, AppendLine is doing the same.I've been racking my brain and searching the Internet trying to figure out why this the way it is, but am coming up empty.
I am trying to generate .bat file based on user interface decisions. I need to have separation between lines. I'm trying:
[Code]...
Well I have been able to figure this out but what I want to do is make my string have a new line after 20 chars. I know how to find how many chars the string has but not how to insert environment.newline at 20 chars.I am using this to find the string length
If string.Length > 20 then
'Need to be able to insert environment.newline at 20 chars
Else
'Normal string
End If
In Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate, a VB.NET WinForms project, I am getting incorrect values for Environment.NewLine and StringBuilder.AppendLine; look at the result in a hex editor, they are resolving to two spaces.
View 6 RepliesI'm not sure why the following code is not working as intended:
CODE:
Where litMessage is the name of the literal control and messageBody is the name of the string variable.
My intention is to output a string onto a web page and to replace the line breaks with a br tag so that it can be displayed on the page correctly. However, nothing is replaced. When viewing the page source, it looks like the line breaks still exist in the string. Similarly, when displaying the string via MsgBox, it displays normally as well. I have also tried wrapping the output with the pre tag and it displays the line breaks properly as well.
The string was originally entered by a user through the use of an asp:Textbox and saved into a MSSQL database. It's retrieved and displayed on another webpage using an asp:Literal control. The only thing that happens to the string before it is submitted is that it is trimmed (i.e. textbox.Text.Trim()).
Perhaps there is something I did not consider?
Edit #1: Due to time constraints, I've decided to just wrap the text with the pre tag. It's an acceptable work around as it preserves the line breaks. Unfortunately, it doesn't explain why the code didn't work in the first place. In the meantime, I'll just leave the question unanswered until I find a proper answer.
Edit #2: Solution found and answered below. UpdatePanel tag added to the question for future reference.
I have a class that's getting an XML document from a URL. I've verified that the XML from the URL has an newline at the end. For some reason, though, this newline is stripped off before being fed back to the user, which is causing an mal-formed XML error when the users feed this XML file into other programs.
Dim reader As XmlTextReader = Nothing
Dim filename As String = _partID & "_" & _majorRev & "_PreCheck.xml"
Dim localFile As String = fileDialog.FileName
Dim URLString As String = _env.HTTPInfo("stwebservices").UriBase & "PreCheckXMLReport.aspx?partId=" & _partID & "&rev=" & _majorRev
reader = New XmlTextReader(URLString)

I am writing a program that will read and write to a file using the My.Computer.Filesystem namespace, and when I append my data file with the code shown below under SaveFile subroutine, it sometimes places extra ControlChars.Newline at the end of the appended text. Sometimes it places one extra newline, and sometimes it adds 3-6 newlines. I have tried everything I can think of to make it add just one newline at the end of each append, as I will be using the newline char to flag each entry on retrieval. I am working out some algorithms in this project to use in a project that will keep track of data in a file using csv format(just practicing saving/retrieving data from a file). The extra newline characters that are added will become a problem when I start to sort the data to display. my xSaveButton click event:
Private Sub xSaveButton_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles xSaveButton.Click
Dim boolAppendData As Boolean
If My.Computer.FileSystem.FileExists("myData.dat") = True Then

In VS2005, I noticed that when you go from the code window to the form window, the form immediately appears, but then redraws again, and takes about 4-5 seconds to come back. Is there any way around this annoyance? Has it been fixed in VS2008? In general, has anyone noticed any speed improvements in the development environment between VS2005 and VS2008?

The particular control I'm trying to figure out is a UserControl. When I design it as a separate DLL, add it to the Toolbox, then drag it onto the form, it shows up. But when I declare the instance in Form_Load & add it to the Forms Controls, it doesn't show up. (Note that I'm dealing with two different UserControls here as what I don't really want to do is create it as a DLL. It's specific to this project & that's where I want it-in this project. I suppose I could create it as a separate project in this solution, but again-that's not what I want to do. I can add a UserControl to this project, but I can't seem to *use* it. Frustrating.)
Dim X As New Class3
X.Size = New System.Drawing.Size(96, 74)
X.Location = New System.Drawing.Point(5, 5)
Me.Controls.Add(X)
Me.Refresh()
Class3 inherits System.Windows.forms.UserControl, and contains a label.OK, found that I can make the UserControl appear by setting the BackColor (X.BackColor=). Doesn't seem like I should need to do that as it's set in Class3, but apparently when I add it to the form it picks up the form's backcolor-which might be the way UserControls work.
But, it still doesn't show the label that's on the UserControl-just a block of color where I placed the UserControl.And now, I might have solved this problem only to raise another. I finally noticed that although Class3 had an InitializeComponent sub it lacked a Sub New-so it never called the InitializeComponent sub.
I added a Sub New that does nothing except call InitializeComponent & now I'm getting the whole thing. I guess now the question is why the Sub New is required for Class3 but not for the DLL? (Or maybe it was created automatically for the DLL but not for Class3? I'll check the hidden code in the DLL project to see if it was created or not.)

If you have a form with two datagridviews that were dragged on to the form from a datasource that have a parent/child relationship with foreign key constraints. Is there any difference between using the binding navigator Delete button or adding a button to the form and in the Click event put "somebindingsource. RemoveCurrent". Basically what I'm trying to find out is if clicking the navigator Delete button causes "Removecurrent" or does it do something else or something additional.
