VS 2005 - Form Redrawn Twice In Development Environment

May 21, 2009

In VS2005, I noticed that when you go from the code window to the form window, the form immediately appears, but then redraws again, and takes about 4-5 seconds to come back. Is there any way around this annoyance? Has it been fixed in VS2008? In general, has anyone noticed any speed improvements in the development environment between VS2005 and VS2008?

C# - WinForms Development Environment In The Workplace

Sep 17, 2010

I'm from an AS/400 (iSeries) background and have no idea about how a team of programmers work within the .Net environment. Lets say a company purchases a new button control. Now, in that company they'll have 5 or 10 developers working with that new control. Its my understanding that even if the control is in the GAC, it must still be copied locally to work on at design-time. My question is, what is locally? Does each developer have a copy on their own PC or is it held centrally on a server?

Change The Website Name For Project From Another Development Environment?

Nov 23, 2009

I have inherited a large VB.NET solution that was created in VS 2003. I am trying to update it to VS 2008 to maintain it. I no longer have access to an install of VS 2003.

The solution contains 15 projects that are console applications and 1 that is a Website application. The website application refers to some assemblies in the other console projects.

When I try to open the solution in VS 2008 all the console applications open but as it tried to open the Web application (or website? -- not sure) I see the dialog "Trying to open http://dmedibiz/dotcom.vbproj". It is unsuccessful in doing so. I don't have a website named http://dmedibiz on my development machine.

I tried changing the name of the website in DotCom.vbproj.webinfo, but that does not have any effect in VS 2008. When I go so far as to change the Hosts file so that the local machine resolves "dmedibiz" to the proper folder on my local machine, I keep getting prompted for a login and cannot access the folder even using the administrator login. I have tried adjusting the security on the Folder and in IIS Manager and even in the Frontpage Extensions, but nothing works.

So, what can I do to open this web project along with the other projects whose classes it references? Is there a way to change the website reference in the upgraded application? I actually do not want Frontpage Extensions in the site, but there was some reference to that also in the erro messages about installing them to "fix" the problem.

Here is the error I am receiving...

Unable to open the Web site '[URL]. Could not find a Web server at 'http://dmedibiz'. check to make sure that the Web server name is valid ...'

Can anyone tell me how to change the website location reference? Or must I remove the Web project from the solution and create a new Website and then copy in the files that need to be worked on?

IDE :: Why Would Database Drivers Work In Development Environment

May 12, 2009

Why would database drivers work in the development environment of VB.Net and not once the project is built and installed on the same pc? I've tried the MS ODBC Oracle driver. I've tried various ODBC datasources. All work when I am in the development environment but none once I build and install. No matter whether the configuration is Debug or Release. This is the only project having this problem. I have other apps (VB.Net) that access the same database (Oracle 9.2) with no problem. The environment variables are the same during both types of runs. The error messages vary depending upon the driver being used.

Green Line Left Side Of Development Environment

Jun 19, 2010

Well I've finally decided to upgrade some of my vb6 applications. Anyway I have two forms that are very similar one is customers one is vehicles. One of them is working on form load and one of them isn't. The one that isn't working I've traced the point it stops down to where there is a green line left of the code on the left bar of the development environment. This green line doesn't exist on the form that works. What the green line in this photo means? [URL].

Bigger Picture [URL]. I found a page that says the green simply means the code was saved but it's only on the form that stops working right after the execution of the sql statement. For some reason while stepping through the code it returns to the show command that was called to originally open the form right before the form opens but it skips everything with the green line next to it. I went and disabled tracking and it went away.

Minimum Development Environment Required For RS232 Communication?

2) What control or class should I use?

Control Not Redrawn On Me.Invalidate()

Apr 13, 2012

I call Me.Invalidate() in the property setter of a custom control (inherits from ProgressBar) but it only causes the control to paint on screen about 1 in every 10 times (or less) whereas there are far more times that the code enters the painting routines (i.e. only on some occassions do the painting routines cause on screen changes). I am using my own Painting routines, not using ProgressBarRenderer.

On the Inherited ProgressBar I set Minimum to 0 and Maximum to 1000 and use a timer to increment Value by 1 on each tick (100ms). Therefore Me.Invalidate() should be called after every tick and hence the 'progress' of the bar should be quite smooth - 1000 small increments as it fills the bar should be pretty small changes and hence appear fairly smooth.

However, what happens is that the control only changes on screen about 1 in 10 of the times that Value changes. The control also writes the progress as a % (integer) onto its surface and each change in the % text is accompanied by an increase in the visual progress. I think this apparent synchronisation is coincidence though, since using Console.WriteLine I can see many many calls to the Painting routine but a few of them actually cause a visual change on screen.

I have tried slowing the timer down to 1000ms but this hasn't changed anything other than there are far more than 10 calls to the painting routines between actual on screen changes.

I am using PointF, RectangleF and SizeF to avoid 'rounding errors' and hence blocky progress from using the Integer versions of those structures.

There's some stuff from the Output window (using Console.Writeline) near the bottom of this post that shows that at the beginning there is 1 OnPaint per Invalidate. Later on (somewhere around 1% and 5% progress) it changes to having several OnPaint calls between Invalidates. So I certainly don't appear to be short on calls to OnPaint. I only appear to be short of actual OnScreen changes.

The Painting routines use the RectangleF structures to create GraphicsPath objects, which are used to create a Region that is then filled by e.Graphics.FillRegion.

Possibilities I can think of:

1) The painting events are too frequent to allow screen udpating, but this doesn't seem likely since 1000ms timer ticks didn't help

2) GraphicsPath and / or Region objects aren't 'precise' and hence a range of similarly sized RectangleF objects create essentially identical GraphicsPath objects (or the same problem when moving from GraphicsPath to Region)

3) Erm, not sure...

Here's the Setter code:

Public Shadows Property Value As Integer
Get
Value = MyBase.Value

'abort' (terminate Immediately) A Form Screen In A Windows Form Application Running Under 'local' Environment?

VS 2008 Datagridview Not Properly Redrawn When Row Inserted

Sep 30, 2009

I have a issue with my DataGridView. It's bound to a DataTable at form load. I have a sub wich handles data recieved from a serialport. Inside that sub I'm adding a row to my datatable. That works fine, but to make the row visible in my datagridview, I have to either click on the row, resize the form so that the DGV dissapears and then appears again, manually call DataGridView.refresh or something like that. Why isn't the DataGridView automatically redrawn when a row is added inside a sub like that? One solution is to add a timer where DataGridView.refresh is executed every second, but it doesn't seem like a good idea

Interface And Graphics :: Stop Things Being Redrawn Flicker

Dec 1, 2008

I'm having trouble with a football program that I'm writing. I'm finding that there is a lot of flicker coming from the program having to redrawn 36 (Australian football) small circles with numbers in them about 10 times per second (or even more) as the players move.I'm just using basic e.graphics. fillellipse.code in the Paint section of the form. I then use me.invalidate on the timer's tick routine.I haven't touched this graphical stuff for a while and I vaguely remember there being some ways to help this. There are also things like the ground which I'd like to not have redrawn because they don't have to as they don't move. I remember that you can do this but I don't remember how.

VB Form Prepare Working Environment In Chosen Directory?

May 16, 2012

I am working on a GUI for a simulation program. The simulation program is a single .exe which is driven by an input file (File.inp placed in the same directory). The Original.inp file functions as a template from which the form reads all the values into an array. Then it changes these values reflecting the changes done by the user in the form. After that it writes all the new values to File.inp. By pushing the "Run" button the Simulation.exe file is executed. The folder structure looks like this:

[Code]..

Ideally I would supply only the GUI, the user would select the working directory and then the GUI.exe would create an input folder and extract the Original.inp and Simulation.exe in the appropriate locations. So far I have only managed to include Original.inp and Simulation.exe as "EmbeddedResources" in my VB project and I have let my code create an input folder in the working directory chosen by the user.

how I can extract the .inp and .exe file into the correct directories? I've searched on google, tried File.WriteAllBytes and Filestream.WriteByte but did not get the desired results. The problem with File.WriteAllBytes was that I could not point to the embedded resource ("Simulation.exe is not a member of Resources" and with Filestream.WriteByte I got a 0 kb file.

Open A Form Built In Datagrids It Connects Again To The Development DB

Jul 28, 2009

I am working with two databases stored in SQL server 2005, with VB.Net 2005. Database 1 - is the DevelopmentDB and Database 2 - LiveDB. I have two front-ends one connecting to the DevelopmentDB and the other connecting to the LIVEDB.

Now, I have a problem with the live front end. After publishing, it accepts me to log on with the Live username and password..(it connects to the LiveDB) Note: The two front ends i.e., for Development and Live have different usernames and passwords.
So, I get connected to LiveDB, however, when I open a form built in Datagrids it connects again to the DevelopmentDB.I have checked the connection strings its connecting to the Live. This is not an application or database problem. The reason being I tested it on another PC and when I logged on with my credentials it was fine. I was connected to the live database and all the forms were displaying accurate data. Therefore, my conclusion is that this is not the front end or backend problem.

VS 2005 Copy Form Within VB 2005 Project?

Oct 12, 2009

I'm attempting to copy a rather complex form from one part of my project and use it (modified) within another part (ie, depending on whether it's maintenance or an outage, you'll get a slightly different email screen).

My first attempt failed miserably, as I had simply right-clicked and pasted the form within the project, assuming renaming the controls would work. nope, I didn't realise that there was stuff in the original form that was renamed as well, and that created a monstrous pile of errors. My second through fourth attempts also failed, generating errors in forms that (I thought) weren't related or connected. Once I deleted the copied form, all was fine.

So, short of trying to rebuild the form from scratch (using a different naming convention for my controls etc.), is there a simple way of doing this? This seems to be such a simple task, but alas I was wrong....(or, at least it's not easy with the information I have right now.

Forms :: [2005] Form-To-Form ComboBox Item Defaulting?

Jan 18, 2011

I have been creating a call management application and I am having a problem with something that I have spent weeks on trying to get working and nothing I try is working for me. My application is an MDI application written in VB.NET 2005 Professional, using .NET Framework 2.0. It uses a back end database using Microsoft SQL Server 2005.When the MDI application launches, a form is displayed to the end user asking for phone number (MaskedTextBox) and a partner name. The partner names are within a ComboBox.

When the end user types in the phone number and selects a value from within the ComboBox, s/he clicks on the start button. This then opens a second form. The phone number from the MaskedTextBox is to default in a second MaskedTextBox (this I am able to get working without issue.) The partner name selected from the ComboBox is to default on the second ComboBox. This is the part where I have been working on it for weeks and not able to get it to function.

The second form has many ComboBoxes, all of which pull down items from a particular table within the database. Some of them are editable and some are not. The ones that are editable are also auto complete Suggest/Append on the ListItems.I wrote a sub to handle the population of these ComboBoxes and also to handle if they are editable or not. All of this is working. However, my main issue is that I can't get the value on the second form to default to what ever was selected on the first form. I do not get any errors but regardless of what I do, the second form always stays as the first item in the list regardless.

The code I am using is as follows:

<CLSCompliant(True)> Public Sub PopulateDropDownListFromDB(ByVal cboName As Elegant.Ui.ComboBox, _
ByVal TableName As String, ByVal ColumnName As String, _
ByVal UseAutoComplete As Boolean, _
ByVal UseSQLDistinct As Boolean)
