'abort' (terminate Immediately) A Form Screen In A Windows Form Application Running Under 'local' Environment?

May 30, 2012

FormA calls DialogB where user cancels DialogB which exits via ForceTermination(), see insert.Caller FormA check for DialogResult not = OK, which it isn't, and I can see this in debug as Abort(3).However, the code continues merrily along its way until I get a 'null reference' error which I'm trying to avoid via Force Termination().This is caused by the user cancelling DialogB, a selection process to get a database (SQL) instance.[code]

Terminate A Program Immediately From Try Catch?

Jan 19, 2010

I am trying to end a program immediately when a critical exception is caught. But I am finding that code after my Try/Catch block is executing even though the code withing the Catch block is executing, and that Catch code is calling Me.Close.

I suspect it has something to do with background .net threads or something, but I have no clue how to deal with those kinds of issues. How can I stop the program as quickly as possible? If code after my Catch executes, it will (and does) throw lots of uncaught exceptions later. Currently, it is not feasible for me to try to catch all the other exceptions. I just want to report an error and end the program.In my form load routine, I create and set up a number of objects and arrays by calling various subroutines.The success of most of the subroutines depends on the sucess of three subs in particular, which are called early on. If one of those three fails, there will undoubtedly be a number of hard to trap exceptions later on in the load routine.

VS 2008 Terminate A Threading.thread Using Thread.abort?

Jun 10, 2010

im trying to terminate a threading.thread using thread.abort the thread runs a download connection so is usually in the middle of socket.recieve or socket.send or socket.connect when aborting i just want to terminate the thread no matter what thread.abort raises an MDA excpetion. so i ticked it off in the debug exceptions menu. now it doesnt raise an exception, but the thread simply wont terminate. my program wont close unless i press top in the debugger.i cant pause downloads because i cant terminate the thread this code wasn't working?

Dim vT As Threading.Thread
For Each vT In clsDownloader.DownloadThreads
If Not vT Is Nothing Then
vT.Abort()

[code].....

as for the exception concerning threads being aborted from other threads being dangerous, how is it possible to send a message from a main thread to another thread to abort itself? as far as i know the only way to a abort one thread from another is to just kill it (because i dont know of ways for a thread to communicate with another).

Abort Startup And Close Form?

Jan 26, 2009

I've got a single form application.

In the Sub New() of that form I'm creating two database classes.

In those classes if I get database errors (such as connection issues) I'm messagebox'ing the error message and setting an ERRFLAG property.

Back in the Sub New() I'm checking that ERRFLAG and I thought I could ME.CLOSE() - but that's not working.

What all is best practice for this type of operation?

This is what I had up to now

Sub New()
Me.CMCStarting = True
' This call is required by the Windows Form Designer.

When you create a slide and then press the F5 button to go into slideshow mode, no matter what size monitor or resolution you use, it always fills up the screen appropriately.

Immediately Close Form After Saving

May 17, 2012

I have my form checked if it's dirty when a user goes to close it. If its dirty is true, the user is asked if they would like to save the data. When they click yes, the 'save event' is called. The problem I'm having is trying to get the form to completly close after saving. At the end of the save I put in me.close(), but another form closing event is triggered. Is this the correct way to dictate having the form close immediately after saving the data or is there a better way? If it is, I must have it placed in the wrong part of my code. Immediately after the "success" dialog box is displayed, I am asked if I want to save the data again.

I have a windows forms application built in VS2005 and migrated to VS2008 that I "inherited" that occasionally will not show some of the objects (i.e. a button or something) when a user runs it. This is sporadic and does not seem to have any notable pattern.Are there any specific types of things I should be looking for that might cause such behavior? I tried looking at available memory and hard disk space issues and that did not seem to have any bearing on the problem.

Visual Studio 2008 Window Form Closes Immediately After Opening?

Mar 29, 2011

Within my Visual Studio 2008 VB.Net project I am opening multiple forms after setting the form (that is opening) to be an mdichild of the main form. This works in really well in most of my forms except one. I am doing the exact same thing for all of them.

Basically I declare the new form:

Using frm As New frmName() With {.variableName = currentVariable}
frm.MdiParent = Me.MdiParent
frm.openForm()
End Using

Within the openForm subroutine in the form code I have:

Public Sub openForm()
InitializeDataSources()
... ...
Me.Show()
End Sub

I know this works because if I remove frm.MdiParent = Me.MdiParent in the main form and change Me.Show() to Me.ShowDialog() in the child form then it works perfectly. Right now (for only one form) it shows the form for only a second (looks like a flicker when staring at the program) and then closes it.
