VS 2008 - Class Module Gets Data Entry From Form
Dec 16, 2010
I've been coding a Windows applicaton for the past seven months but there aren't a lot of "windows" in the application so I have a question on getting and returning data from forms. I display a form and the user makes a listbox selection then presses Ok. Normally I can proceed from there (in a class module) with values from the config file, but sometimes his selection will require me to ask for more information. So I want the class to display a form, pass control to it, then when the user hits OK on this form, return to the class. What is happening is the class continues with all its inline code and function calls and doesn't show the form until the end of its current function.
Dim flClientInputFile As New CFile
Dim flPreparedOutputFile As New CFile
Dim lRecordCount As Long
Dim sProcessing As String
Dim sTest As String
Dim frmAbc As New frmAbc
frmAbc.Show()
frmAbc.Activate()
x()
When I run and step through this code, I find I'm in x() before I even saw the form. x() needs the data the user has entered on frmAbc in order to continue.

I've been searching for the answer for a while but can't find it yet. Basically so far I have a simple VB.Net form with one button.I would like to make a class or module that can handle events from the main form. This is my code so far but it doesn't seem to work.

Currently we are using a VB script macro created in word to create some fairly simple forms based off of data entered on a data entry form. I am very new to VB, and I have been able to create many applications using forms, but I have absolutely no history creating reports. I have been reading up on the reports, and it looks like they are designed to use with data sources like tables. I merely want to take either data from the entry form, or from data derived internaly from processing the user entered data and populate a defined report "form". I have been searching, but there is so much on printing reports, that I feel overwhelmed. I am not looking for the exact answer as much as a link or place to look for a sample for what I want to do.

Suppose I have a parameter query called FillByStatus in my "Customer" DataTable and I want to fill the CustomerTableAdapter On Form_Load using this query. So I can do that by using the following code:
Private Sub Form2_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
Me.OrdersTableAdapter.Fill(Me.CustomerOrdersDataSet.Orders)
Me.CustomerTableAdapter.FillByStatus(Me.CustomerOrdersDataSet.Customer, "Active")
End Sub

Im new to this forum and VB Programming. I have installed Visual Basic Express 2008 and SQL Server. The first thing I did was create a new project and within that project created a new sql database. The database I created is to keep a list of clients and I have fields such as client_ID, Firstname..etc The next thing I did was create a data entry form for all the database fields using textboxes. Also 2 buttons named save & cancel. So when the user fills out the client info and clicks on save I want the data to be written to the client table. I know the code has to be written within the save button but I don't know where to start like opening the connection, writing to the database and closing the connection.

In VB6 I always wrote my apps using Sub Main as the starting point. I see in .NET I'm able to wrap it in a shared class (see [URL] for example). However, the downside is that I can't declare any class-level variables, because of course the class is never instantiated. Being shared, it limits what the code can do. So, any benefit to use a shared class and shared sub main which I'm missing here.
Otherwise it seems using a module (as in VB6) provides a lot more flexibility. Of course, I should also ask if "Application Framework" is really the way to go for real-world apps, or if it's only there for beginners and real-world coders turn it off and use Sub Main instead? If so, how are the events "UnhandledException" and "NetworkAvailabilityChanged" done if App Framework is turned off?

I have a Microsoft Access database that has one-to-many relationships. When I created the tables for the database, I did not enter any data into any records, as that will be done by the application user. My problems is when data is entered into the parent and child tables, the parent table data is the only one that gets saved when clicking the save button on the binding navigator.If I have the parent and child tables data entered the same way a user would prior to connecting the data source and add EndEdit() to the child table BindingSource in the BindingNavigator click event, everything works exactly the way I want it to.This application is a data entry form, so it wouldn't make sense to have to have data entered in tables prior to adding the data source to my project. What is the best way to create a data entry form with one-to-many relationships? [code]

I've an app that starts to work from a module wich should load a form an do other things with a class library who raise an event an the form shoud cath it. The problem is that applicarion.run(frmMain) displays the form in the same thread the the code stops work while the form is open. And I need that the app works in this way because the user need to send files to the app using args and this avoid that the app init another instance of it (in other code) and update the form with the info when the event is raised.

I'm trying to set up a data entry form using my own toolbar as a navigator. I am able tor retrieve the data fine, but I'm having trouble with the record navigation. I'm tring to use the movefirst/last/previous/next methods of a bindingsource to move from record to record, but it's not working. The code is below. Apparently I'm not properly attaching the bindingsource..but nothing I try seems to work.
Imports System.Data.Common
Imports System.Data.SqlClient
Public Class Form1

basically, i have a database full of records and i want my list box to be able to display all the data from one column in one table in it. i can do this, but only when i enter the same amount of items into the listbox's "items collection" as the number of records in the database. other wise with my code alone, i get this error message:
Incorrect coding?:
ListBox1.Items(inc) = ds.Tables("TTDB").Rows(inc).Item("ChildName") -
Error Message:
InvalidArgument=Value of '0' is not valid for 'index'. Parameter name: index

I have an ArrayList that is set to Friend. Once I click my button "abc" is added to the ArrayList and then the form MsgBoxes out the Count of 1 (Correct).When I use Threadpool to count the number of objects within the ArrayList it always returns 0.
Example:
Imports System.Threading
Public Class Form1
Friend Alphabet As New ArrayList
[code]....
I am obviously getting some sort of cross-thread issue here but have no idea how to correct this. I usually just setup single threads so this is my first time playing with ThreadPool & already lost at step 1!

I'm making a simple window that bounces around the screen (no reason, just for fun). I can make it work when the moving code is in a Timer_Tick event in the form, but now that I try to move it out to a module, it won't work. Here's what I have:
[Code]....
I try to call it with Bounce(Me) but the form doesn't move. I added a Debug.WriteLine(form.Location) at the end of the sub, and it shows that the location is not changing.

I have a project that calls for just a ton of forms and I'd like them all centered on screen. Any way to call this in a module? Just trying to minimize the code necessary for each form. This is the basic centering I use now, only it's in each form_load.
Private Sub Form1_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
Dim xLoc As Integer = (Screen.PrimaryScreen.Bounds.Width - Me.Width) 2
Dim yLoc As Integer = (Screen.PrimaryScreen.Bounds.Height - Me.Height) 2
Me.Location = New Point(xLoc, yLoc)
End Sub

Some of my co-workers make extensive use of the VB.net concept of Modules. Unfortunately, I just don't 'get it'. I see no benefit in using modules over shared classes. When would it be preferable to use a module?

Use a DLL rather than a module so that if I updated the DLL it would propagate over all the projects that used it. I want to create a library of functions and subroutines that may be used in many projects (such as my gradient and some error messages).

I am creating user accounts in Active Directory via vb.net.Once the account is created I need to assign permissions to the "homedirectory" that I have assigned in Active Directory.I have access to the Active Directory name attributes but I need to convert these to a NT account format ( DOMAINAccountName ) to add security via the DirectorySecurity AddAccessRule method.Is there a way to instantiate the NTAccount class from an Active Directory Entry? I'm not sure if this is necessary I just found that class and it looked like a good fit; a simple routine to create the DOMAINAccountName from the Directory Entry attributes like cn might also suffice.

This is purely a coding practice question concerning VB.NET structures. Where do you keep one?As an example, I've created a structure for the simple purpose of keeping information organized, I'd like this structure to be stand-alone, not belonging to any class so I wouldn't have to access it through SomeClass.MyStructure but rather simply MyStructure. So, do I keep it in a separate class and import it into my namespace? Do I keep it in a module (Static class, essentially)? Do I just make a separate VB.NET code file and place is there (I would like it to live in a separate file). Just to clarify, I need this structure to be accesses by the whole application, not just a single class.
