VS 2008 Comparing PDFs Programatically
Jun 14, 2011I've got a project where I'm going to have to compare some PDFs. I've checked out a few SDKs, but I was wondering if anyone else has had to tackle this and may have some suggestions?

View 3 RepliesI've got relatively little experience with VB but I've been asked by my employer to try to write a program to automate a billing process. We print PDFs for some of our clients, and we do two copies. One copy goes to the account holder, and one goes to the company that funds the account. So we have a directory structure that looks something like this:
Copies that went to the account holders:
FolderA1234.pdf
FolderB987.pdf
FolderB6767.pdf
[Code]...
As you can see, the file names are the same. But items in FolderA are billed differently than items in FolderB. So the ideal program would be able to go through FolderA and FolderB, collect the filenames, and then go through SubfolderA and SubSubFolderA and report back that, "1 file matched a filename in FolderA. 2 files matched filenames in FolderB". I have no idea where I would beging to write such a program but is this something that is plausible?
My manager says he can probably do something like this in an hour manually so if it would take longer than that to code it's probably not worth it. I'd really like to be able to show some skill and do this, though (I've only been here a few months and this would be a good opportunity to provide some added value).
I am trying to add a webbrowser control to my app and view PDFs. I am sort of get it to work..where I can choose oen adn it opens...BUT when I go to open another it errors out..I think I sort of have the WebBrowser working...ALTHOUGH i cannot seem to change the image...I can only load it once...ERROR: Trying to revoke a drop target that has not been registererd (exception from HRRESULT:0x80004100 After the app opens I can click either or and it will either open the PDF or the web page..BUT I CANNOT select again...I get the error above...I have tried to set the webbrowser to NOTHING but that does not seem to be working.
webbrowserPDF.Source = Nothing
If Test = "fire_district.pdf" Then
webbrowserPDF.Source = Nothing

I have a PDF billing template that I need to put in the various information for customers and then send them the PDF's. I was looking into coding this with VB and saw iTextSharp mentioned a few times.
When I googled it I only found something on SourceForge and it was written in C#, where do you go for something in VB.net?
I'm automating downloads. I was getting this error quite a bit using Webbrowser to navigate to a PDF (various PDFs at various websites). In other words the PDF was already on display in the browser when I called WebClient.DownloadToFile. I got a LOT better results when I desisted from WebClient and switched to this API (just pass in the two strings along with zeroes for the other parameters).
[Code]...
And yet Webclient seems oriented for only two entries (username and password). How do you set up the credentials for three entries? I hate to abandon WebClient, but at this point I just don't know how to make it work.
I need to print multiple existing files, PDFs. I have the following
[Code]....
Is there another 'better' way of doing this? Sometimes it just doesn't print the PDF, I guess because it's taking longer than the WaitForExit time. And so closes the process.
I'm trying to use the Global.asax file in the root application of the website to catch requests for pdf files in the root that don't exist any more. I've configured iis to send pdf requests to asp.net. The whole thing works perfectly on development. It also works on the live system with missing .aspx pages, but not .pdf. Instead an "Error Code 64: Host not available". I'm using the Global.asax file to avoid the web.config and child applications (1.1 & 2.0) inheriting settings.[code]...
View 1 RepliesI'm trying to programmatically select the first node loaded into a treeview.
There are 4 main branches - that each node is added to
'If ndeSelect Is Nothing Then ndeSelect = nde
Select Case cdr(1).ToString
Case "Translation"
[Code]....
I tried creating an NDESELECT object to "remember" the node - then tried the old boolean first/loop trick - but it's not remembering that SELECTEDNODE. Seems that the NDE object is just a node object - maybe not "smart" enough to know where it got loaded??
I'd like to be able to create, name and store individualized reports (school report cards, actually) with VB.Net and Crystal Reports using data from our SQL database.
It would be even better to be able to automatically generate individualized e-mails using e-mail addresses stored in the database, attaching the aforementioned PDF reports and sending them off.
I have an Excel 2007 workbook chock full o' VBA macros that do various things, including one that jumps from chart to chart making PDFs of each using PDFCreator, based on some code I borrowed from Ken Puls (url...).However recently I and some users of the workbook started having problems where the PDFs would be created with either gray image artifacts over the charts,or the whole chart image would have a double of itself skewed slightly. It just happens the problems started after we did a global upgrade to Office 2007, though I had had 2007 installed on my computer for a while and tested and used the workbook extensively without issue up until then. Here is the part of the code that automates the printing:
Sub PDF_print_all()
'Author : Ken Puls (www.excelguru.ca)
'Macro Purpose: Print to PDF file using PDFCreator[code]...
The problem is not consistent either... sometimes it will print to PDF with an oddly shaped block of gray, and sometimes it will only have the whole chart image doubled. The only consistency I could find is that sometimes if an object is selected in a chart beforehand (a text box, chart line, axis numbers, etc) the gray artifact will partly mimic the shape of whatever object had been selected.I wish I could include example images to show exactly what's happening.I know it's not a problem inherent to PDFCreator because if I manually print to it in Excel, the PDF image looks perfect. It's only when I use the automated method that the problem occurs, so I thought maybe it was the code.
i have 4 listbox and i named it
1. listbox40
2. listbox20
3. listbox5
[code]....
setting the form opacity programatically in the MouseEnter and MouseLeave events. The problem isn't with the actual events, the problem is that the events occur in places where I don't want it to happen. So in my project, I have a form with 3 user controls in it. The user controls are docked in the form so no actual space from the form is available to the user.
I have the methods:
Form1_MouseEnter(~) Handles Form1.MouseEnter, UserControl1.MouseEnter, UserControl2.MouseEnter, UserControl3.MouseEnter
Form1_MouseLeave(~) Handles Form1.MouseLeave, UserControl1.MouseLeave, UserControl2.MouseLeave, UserControl3.MouseLeave
when you enter the form, the form opacity is set to 1. And when left, the form opacity is set to 0.7 .However, what happens right now is obviously that when the user changes the mouse position from one user control to another, the form opacity flickers (turns to 0.7 and back to 1 really fast).
I've had no issues with this in C++, however, in Visual Basic 2008 (not sure about 2010), when I run a Do loop of any type, and run a comparison to 0, or even 0.0, the code loops a second time.
[Code]...
To my knowledge it should cancel after the 5th line, since the condition is satisfied. However it does not. Instead it runs the loop one last time.If I put in a comparison of any number higher or lower than 0, it works as it should, and cancels properly when the 5th line is written. So 1, -3, 0.0001, etc. works, so the problem lies with 0.
Now I do not know that much about the debugger, but it should be mentioned I'm running express edition, and I could not find anything that lets me see how each line compares. Nor, after an hour of searching online, could I find a single forum where this is answered (though perhaps that is due to how I worded my search).
If someone could explain to me why the comparison does not work as it should and loops a second time when comparing to 0, or even 0.0 (one person thought it was a difference in balance being double and 0 being an integer),
How do I check if 1 file is the same as another file? For example, lets say I have to files. Both have the same name, but different contents. How would I "compare" the files and tell if they are the same or different?
View 3 RepliesHopefully this question will have an easy answer; I've tried searching for the answer myself, but I don't know what to search for (I don't know what you would call this).
Is there a way to compare a string to see if it matches more than 1 value?
[Code]...
How do I tell if the current time is between two other times? ie. is it currently between 8:00 AM & 4:00 PM.
View 9 RepliesI'm wondering if there is another way of comparing two byte arrays, that isn't going through each index of the array.[code]But that would give me false negatives. If I wanted the real results then I would have to add a Not.
View 4 RepliesThis is the code I have in one button and I have 2 listboxes that will be filled with the info it gets. This code should compare 1 avi file to one jpg file and see if they have the same name. If YES then it will add the avi path to one listbox. If they don't have the same name OR the .jpg doesn't exists it will add avi path to another listbox.. But currently it is adding the avi name to both listboxes.
View 6 RepliesFirst of all - It`s my first post here so welcome I have a short question.I have an array with strings values, and a datacolumn with values of the same data type. The question is - what is the most efficient method to find values which are in the array, but aren`t in the datacolumn?
View 18 RepliesI have the following
Dim input As String
If e.KeyCode = Keys.Enter Then

I am making a app that reads options of a ini
dim config as new iniconfigsource("patch.ini")
dim test as string = config.configs("news").getstring("test")
Then I made a dropdown with options
I want my script to compare the values of the dropdown with the string readed from the ini
then uses it as selected value (the so called standard value) the one uc without clicking on the arrow if the none of the values match with the string value of the ini then it executes
dropdown1.selectedindex = 0
I have a combobox that displays saved names from the fullname column of my database. This works fine, all the items under the fullname column are added to the combobox. However, I also have several textboxes on the same form that also need to display data from the database, from the same record. So I was wondering if this was possible:
[Code]...
I have these list of RS-232 strings declared in my public class
Public Class TouchInterface
Dim WatchTVbtnCmd As String = "rs232command1"
Dim VolUpbtnCmd As String = "rs232command2"
Dim VolDownbtnCmd As String = "rs232command3"
Dim SystemOffbtnCmd As String = "rs232command4"
Dim RadiobtnCmd As String = "rs232command5"
Dim MusicbtnCmd As String = "rs232command6"
I then have this private sub. For the sake of this thread, what I would like to do is get the name of the label that was clicked which in the code below is already done, convert it to string (not sure if this needs to be done), this is also done in the code below. Next I want to compare the labelnamestring to all the variables in the public class to find out which one it is equal to and then disply that variable which should be my rs232 string in the message box. I have also added "Cmd" to the variable names above so I also need to work out how to add the text "Cmd" to the string to properly compare.
Private Sub Musicbtn_Click_1(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles WatchTvbtn.Click, VolUpbtn.Click, VolDownbtn.Click, SystemOffbtn.Click, Radiobtn.Click, Musicbtn.Click, GardenVolUpbtn.Click, GardenVolDownbtn.Click, GardenRadiobtn.Click, GardenOffbtn.Click, GardenMusicbtn.Click, GardenMediaCenterbtn.Click
Dim labelname As Label = DirectCast(sender, Label)
[Code] .....
I was just wondering if a computer would add two numbers together (positive) faster that comparing two numbers.
I was thinking that it would be comparison (best case) due to the fact that the 0th bits could be different right off the bat. Where as when adding, moving from bit 0 to N is mandatory for addition.
But then again a computer may add/compare differently than I am imagining.
Just wondering if anyone knows why does my authentication server fail at comparing strings? Also is there a better method of comparing strings than what im using below? User types in a textbox then sends text to server, server then checks it

I'm trying to make a Lottery program on visual basic 2008, but there's one thing that I am stuck with.Note: My explanation may be hard to understand, so if you would rather have me send you my code and see how it works, I'm fine with that. My code is pretty long so far, so I didn't know if i should post it on here.
My program has 6 picture boxes lined up horizontally, and has one text box underneath each one. There is a play and stop button on the bottom left corner.I've altered my program to have animations for the picture boxes. Instead of having a random picture picked, I have it so that each picture box scrolls through a series of 10 numbers when the user presses play.
When the player presses stop, the picture boxes stops scrolling, and random pictures are displayed in each box. (The picture is really just a black circle with a number in it).The text boxes below the picture boxes are for the user to put numbers in. These are the numbers they select for the lottery. Now this is my predicament. Since the picture boxes decides what the winning lotto numbers are, how can I compare the numbers in the text box to the pictures?
I currently have a simple crystal reports application which generates a crystal report and in the built in viewer provided by VS2005. There is a drop down where you can select options to change the criteria of the report. I wish to convert this app to a windows executable which will take all those select options and generates pdfs based on the crystal report. the executable will be triggered by windows task scheduler...or maybe command line app?
Obviously this will be somewhat of a re-write. What would be the best way to start this as? a crystal report application or a windows application.
I have the code below on a timer( "b" is a bitmap )
If

Nothing)

The problem is that it raises the event even if the picture didn't change.
comparing the 2 images without actually comparing them pixel by pixel (too slow to do the job)?
I cant seem to think this morning.I am trying to compare version strings. These are scraped off a website...
examples:
4.5.0.55
4.2.2.128
4.5.0.37
5.0.0.713
how do i make sure I am grabbing the highest version?right now I have it checking the length, if less than 9 .. add a zero. then remove the .'s and convert to an integer. then just check. I know thats not the best and most accurate.
How can I download a pdf and store to disk using vb.net or c#? The url (of the pdf) has some rediection going on before the final pdf is reached. I tried the below but the pdf seems corrupted when I attempt to open locally,
Dim PdfFile As FileStream = File.OpenWrite(saveTo)
Dim PdfStream As MemoryStream = GetFileStream(pdfURL)
PdfStream.WriteTo(PdfFile)
PdfStream.Flush()
