VS 2008 Copy File To Network Share With Username/pass Passed In The Code
Aug 4, 2010
I've been looking at accessing shared folders, read and write, via the network without being prompted by the OS for the username and password.
On this forum, and googling, I can find many things about accessing network shares, but none using code which also passes the username and password required.
What I'm basically looking for is to not have to map a drive on the users computer. Then using code, write or read files from a network share and at the same time pass the username / password required for that network share.

I'm hoping someone can point me in a different direction. I'm copying files from one computer to another. Both are on the same switch connected at 1Gbps here's my problem:Using File.Copy with a list of files I can get an average transfer speed of ~60Mbps Using multiple background workers with a split list of files and File.Copy is slower Using the FileStream read/write method I get an average speed of ~55Mbps with a 8M buffer
What can I do to get a faster transfer rate? I'd be happy to hit 250Mbps over the LAN.

I am working on a backup utility for use with the mysql db. Because I need the actual backup to run regardless of if a user is logged on or not, I created the backup engine in a windows service.
Basically the backup engine checks to see if a backup job is scheduled to be run and if it is, it kicks off a mysqldump to do the backup. For sake of performance I am saving all backup jobs to the local c: drive then doing a file copy to the user defined destination.
Everything works fine except for the file copy. If the user selects a local resource to the computer it works fine. However, if a network drive is selected, I get an error that it cannot find the path.
I started thinking about it and believe this is expected since the backup engine is probably oblivious to whatever mapped drives that particular user has, i.e. the mapping process is done when someone logs in and my app is running at a lower level.
I started doing some research on this problem and found that some people are saying that windows services are oblivious of networks all together. This seemed a little odd to me so I thought I would bring the issue here.
Is a windows service truely unaware of network activity? How can I change the program to move the completed backups over to a network drive?

I am looking for a way to possibly intercept the point that a file is being accessed on a network share. Specifically before it is determined whether the user has access to the file or not.The goal will be to grant access to that file if the file request is coming from a specific process and that user currently does not have access.

I am developing an application, which hunts the local network for attached computers then checks for a share and a file, if found it displays it in a listbox. While testing this I have seen some strange Chinese or Japanese computer names pop up and in a few seconds go away, the names seem to always be different.

I am trying to open a file from a server
I currently have
Dim attachedFilePath As String = "\myservermyshare est.txt"
File.Open(attachedFilePath, FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Read, FileShare.Read)
This does not open a file.
However, if I change the path to be local then there is no issue.
Dim attachedFilePath As String = "c:... est.txt"
So, is there a way to open a file from remote storage?

I'm running into this problem when it comes to determining a network logged on username and i hope someone can help me out or atleast point me in the right direction.Situation:1 Windows 2003 server that is serving files through Active directory. No Dfs installed, just plain files sharing.1 or multiple clients that access the files, make modifications and creates or deletes files. For arguments sake let's say that the clients are Windows XP computer and the users are logged on to the local domain (AD).Currently available:When the client alters, creates or deletes a file i have a (VB.Net Windows Service) script that tells me that this is being done and stores a record in a database for this action being performed.Desire:I wan't to know the client's ip-address, computername or logged on username so that i can store this to. I have tried about 20 different scripts but all check the username on the server side and not the client. So now i either get back "SYSTEM" or "NTAUTHORITYSYSTEM" instead of the user's AD name.Below is the code i use to monitor the directory and or file changes. The "writeDBLog" is where i want to pass the username to write to the database.

I am developing an Application in VB.Net 2.0. I have a module which would copy files from the Local Machine to a shared folder on remote machine. This shared folder on the remote machine is an authenticated folder. So, after searching on the Internet I found the following piece of code.[code]Another point to note is that when I connect to the File Share using Windows Explorer and then try to execute the application, it works properly.I am not sure why I am getting the error when I do not connect to the Shared Folder using Windows Explorer.Do I have to set some property so that the Credentials passed in the authentication are used.I also checked some posts that suggested setting up Mapped Drive to the Shared Folder on the Local machine and then to copy the file using IO.File.Copy function. However, I cannot use this as this Remote Folder should be only accessed through the application and not in any other case by the User. The users will not even have the credentials to this remote Server as it will be configured by the admin. So, Is there any way in which I can set this up and transfer the files from local machine to a remote shared folder?

The .NET security model throws security errors whenever a .NET exe is run from a file share. The error does not appear when ran from a local drive. Does anyone know of a way around this without requiring the code to be signed?

I'm writing a console app to take care of our automated user creation process which was previously done by a batch file. I need to check if a users network share exist on any of 38 servers but seem to be having trouble finding info on how to do it. From what i can tell i need to use the netapi32.dll and the NetShareCheck function, but i'm not sure how to do it.
this is what i have so far, but it isn't working as it should. it seems to be returning 2311 in almost all cases exept if i use uppercase on the server and device and the device starts with C.
Imports System.Runtime.InteropServices
Public Class NetApiWin32
Declare Unicode Function NetShareCheck Lib "netapi32.dll"

I have written small a software. I want to install it on a server and and make it accessible for all the other users on network.
How can I retrieve the server name (the computer program installed) with .NET?
Also, sharing the "Program Files" folder doesn't look like a smart idea for making the program accessible from the other computers.

If I send a String set to Nothing as an input parameter to a SQL stored procedure, and in the sproc it's like this @MyString Char(9) = NULL, what does it turn NULL into? Because I'm firing the sproc and it's not firing the statement that says IF @MyString = NULL... So I don't know what it is... Or how can I pass the string as a NULL if nothing is passed as a parameter to my calling function?

I have a .NET application (VB.NET) that runs against a MS Access database. Every data request connects to the access database, runs and returns the query and closes the connection back again. I placed the database on a windows xp 32-bit machine. I have two clients on which I installed the .NET application. Both clients are running windows 7 professional 32-bit. Now I have a performance problem with this.
When I use the first client it runs fine. All data is shown very fast. When I than use the second client, it takes some 10 seconds to connect to the database, fetch the data and close the database connection. When i ask for other data on that second client, it all runs fine, until I request data from the first client than back again. Than it takes again 10 seconds on the first client before my data is fetched.

Any simple way of automatically updating a newer version of my application from a network share. Everything I have read pertains to an update from a web site. This is possibly a simple thing to do but as I have 6-8 users using the application I have to email them all stating there is a new version on the share and for them to copy and overwrite the existing application executable in the program filesapp directory. If this could be done on launching the program within the splash screen that would be fantastic.

I have a program where I need to be able to access files from an administrative share on a remote machine where the username is administrator and there is no password. I want to be able to access these files without the user getting prompted to input the username and password.
I have searched around and found some references to WMI - but as far as I can tell, WMI is mainly for managing the remote machine and not necessarily for file access (?). Also, some information gathered about WMI leads me to believe that it may be disabled on some machines or not installed on others (?). Since this program is meant to go out to a diverse customer base, I need to make sure that I cover as many angles as possible to ensure this program will run on as many machines as possible.

I've had this problem with both VS 2010 and Visual Web Developer 2010. I want to save my projects on a network share (which I have as a mapped drive), because our network drives are backed up daily. For some reason though, VS only shows local drives when I try to save a project - all my network drives do not show up.
