I'm hoping someone can point me in a different direction. I'm copying files from one computer to another. Both are on the same switch connected at 1Gbps here's my problem:Using File.Copy with a list of files I can get an average transfer speed of ~60Mbps Using multiple background workers with a split list of files and File.Copy is slower Using the FileStream read/write method I get an average speed of ~55Mbps with a 8M buffer
What can I do to get a faster transfer rate? I'd be happy to hit 250Mbps over the LAN.

I am working on a backup utility for use with the mysql db. Because I need the actual backup to run regardless of if a user is logged on or not, I created the backup engine in a windows service.
Basically the backup engine checks to see if a backup job is scheduled to be run and if it is, it kicks off a mysqldump to do the backup. For sake of performance I am saving all backup jobs to the local c: drive then doing a file copy to the user defined destination.
Everything works fine except for the file copy. If the user selects a local resource to the computer it works fine. However, if a network drive is selected, I get an error that it cannot find the path.
I started thinking about it and believe this is expected since the backup engine is probably oblivious to whatever mapped drives that particular user has, i.e. the mapping process is done when someone logs in and my app is running at a lower level.
I started doing some research on this problem and found that some people are saying that windows services are oblivious of networks all together. This seemed a little odd to me so I thought I would bring the issue here.
Is a windows service truely unaware of network activity? How can I change the program to move the completed backups over to a network drive?

I've been looking at accessing shared folders, read and write, via the network without being prompted by the OS for the username and password.
On this forum, and googling, I can find many things about accessing network shares, but none using code which also passes the username and password required.
What I'm basically looking for is to not have to map a drive on the users computer. Then using code, write or read files from a network share and at the same time pass the username / password required for that network share.

I have a VB2008 application that runs off a server. Users connect to the application via shortcut.
[code...]
For what it's worth, the application is targeting .NET 2.0 Framework on both the development side and package install side.
The illustration below is more for my sake than yours, but should help me explain the problem.
User A and B work just fine, but when User C and User D attempt to use the program via shortcut9(same as User A and B) the error below is displayed.
[code...]
what I can do to allow User C and D to use the application?

I'm working on my first VB2010 project, having used VB6 up to now.In VB6, I used some library functions to implement a treeview of network PCs and their shared folders.
I've been searching, but I've not found a way to get this done with VB2010.
I have found scode to return a list of all the devices local to my network....close but not what I'm looking for.

All i am trying to do is read and write files to a shared folder on a network in visual basic (VS 2010). I can go to the folder through windows without a problem and without being prompted for a password. However when i try to do it through visual basic, it cant find the directory. Here is my small snippet of code that i (hope) is telling me that the program cannot connect to the folder. [code] Are there any known issues with VS 2010 that may cause this? Maybe something else in my code that could have an effect? This is in my form_load event though, so it is literally one of the first things that runs.

With the help of NetFileEnum or Openfiles.exe of system32, we can get the username who has opened the shared files. Is there any API function or any exe files in any programming language like c#, vb.net, visual c++ to find out who is the user to create, rename, or delete shared files or folders on the network?

I have a web service that is currently calling the DOS command copy to put a text file to a specified network share.
This is the code:
Imports System.Web.Services
Imports System.Web.Services.Protocols
Imports System.ComponentModel
Imports System.Data
Imports System.IO
Imports System.Xml
[Code] .....
It appears doing this might be causing some problems and our front-end programmer suggested I see if I can output the stream "output" directly to the network shared printer specified by the SOAP request. Is this possible? This is VS 2010

I'm using System.Management.ManagementScope to connect to a remote computer and install an MSI package. This works great if the MSI is located on the remote computer, but it fails if I try to use a network location to run the MSI from. The UNC path is correct because if I manually type it from the remote computer it runs fine. There must be a limitation (security I'm thinking) that prevents things from running via WMI if the exe isn't local to the remote machine. My last hope will be to copy the MSI from the network location, store it locally on the remote computer, then run it - but I'd really rather not have to do that.

I have a program that uses IO.File.Copy to copy files from point a to point b. Its slow, which is fine because there rather large files. I was wondering if there is way to get an estimate time to copy a particular file(s).
Example: File a will take 1 hour to copy, File B will take 30 minutes to copy. Estimate Total Time: 1 hour 30 minutes.

Here is my idea so far: I have a bunch of computers connected in a local network. One of them is a MySQL server, one will have a vb.NET program wich will act as a "second server" and the rest will be different clients. What I want to do is that the "second server" will send out some kind of message or network package to some of the clients in the network, and they will execute a code based on what message it is, or what kind of package it is. I'll give you a simple example:

I am trying to copy a table from a network database to a local database. I used DAO and could check if the network table existed using a function that tried to assign a TableDef object to the table in question. If there was no error then I assumed that the table existed and the function returned true...Or it would error out and return false.I could then proceed with the copy or not as the case may be.I am converting the code to ADO.net and need to know how to check for a table. It works, when I make getBar methods public, but I don't want to expose these unneccessarily. Why I can't call private shared methods from a public one in the same class is over my head. I'm using .net framework 4.0 in a web application.

We have a shared drive which has a folder in which we programatically store the reports we create in MS Access. Sometimes the user will lose the rights to insert the files in (write access) to that folder. But we are not shown any system generated error messages for this while adiing the reports. At a lter point of time we will come to know that those reports were not saved.I am looking for a code to check whether we have the write access to the particular folder and if not, throw a suitable error message.

I'm working on a web application that stores some Office document (and any other kind of doc) on a remote shared area. I need to allow user to view the files available on shared area using my web application, how can I do that? Some years ago I solved this issue with Java / JSP opening into an output streaming the file, how can I do the same with ASP.NET and VB.NET?
This is how I organized my application:
C:Webapp -> Webapplication
emoteserversharedfolder -> shared area
The owner of IIS process is the only user that can write / read the shared area.

Using: Visual Studio 2005.We are developing three different applications. We currently have 4 different modules that we all share among our applications. When a change is made to one of the modules, we must make changes to the other two modules. If it is possible, how do you (where do you) create a single location for one file to be shared among three different applications? Hopefully this will avoid the unnecessay task of changing a file three times.

My program requires the reading and writing to a file that is shared among all users of a system. Currently I keep this file (an XML configuration file) in the directory that my application is installed to, which is C:Program FilesSomething by default. On Windows 7 (and probably XP too, but I haven't checked), regular users cannot write to this file. While I could probably set permissions as needed in my installation program, I'd rather find a more appropriate place for this file. All users need to read and write to it. Doing some Googling turns up C:ProgramData for Windows 7, but XP doesn't create this folder. Is there a common place on both platforms? Finally, is there an environment variable I can query for it?
