View 4 RepliesI am stuck again. I have an Access database file which list all the players for a baseball team. The player age range is from 12 to 14. I need to be able to click a button to count how many players are in each age group and dispaly that information in three separate labels. One label for each age group.
I have learned how to count rows, but how do I count rows containing certain data like 12, 13 or 14. I also know and understand how to get information to display in a label. I need to know and understand how to count just certain records.
I have a recordset rst, that returns the data i require ok. However i wish to transfer this data into an array, and also count the amount of records, as a counter, i.e. 23/312 records.I have tried the way i have used in the past, not .net, of rst.movelast etc, but this doesn't seem to work.

I have Access 2007 db in which users insert some data (name, last name etc.). This db is for some problems in my work and every of this records needs some solution. When we solve this problem we come back to this record and select YES in yes/no field of db.I want to count inserted records and show it on first form of my application like this (label or text field, it is not important) :
* all records : 124
* solved records : 50
* not solved records : 74
I can retrieve records from my Database fine, but I'm having trouble updating records. I am getting a syntax error on [code] I get this error when I change the Last Name (Row 0, Column 1). [code]

View 1 RepliesHow to query a record in vb.net using combo or textbox via linq to sql like the search engine? Just like when you search in google or youtube, once you typed in the initial string on the textbox or combo box it will show a drop-down list. I tried to use it in my application using linq method but the problem is it would duplicate on the first string that you entered on the dropdown list if that record exist on your database after you press the space key. I used the code below which duplicates the records on the drop-down list when you type in your string after the space key.
I just want it to be like in any search engine that when you type in the string or your initial string, it will display on the drop-down list all the records from the database that contains the string you entered without duplication. In my case, I'm trying to query a name from my database. This is how it should work, For example, if you type an initial string in the textbox or combo box a named 'Mark', it should display all the names from the database containing 'Mark' into the drop-down list before it changes into its final string that you entered.
Here is the codes I used:
Private Sub ComboBox1_TextChanged(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles
ComboBox1.TextChanged
Dim db As New MultipleDatabaseOperationDataContext
Dim search As String
search = ComboBox1.Text

I am using a tableadapter to connect my project to an MS database. I need a a function which counts the number of rows in the table for something which I am doing. I have sucessfully used the count function to count the number of rows for my other tables, but when I tried to reuse it for another table, it wouldn't work. I get an error...
An unhandled exception of type 'System.ArgumentException' occurred in System.Data.dllAdditional information: Input string was not in a correct format.Couldn't store <AH25> in ProductCode Column. Expected type is Int32.
and this is the code which I used
Dim record As Integer = TAProduct.GetData.Rows
Do Until record = TAProduct.GetData().Count
' other codes
loop
It only seems to work if the first column is an integer datatype, which is the case for my other tables, but the table which I am currently dealing with using a string datatype. Is there another way to count the number of rows without using SQL statements or can I adapt my existing code in some way?
So I've been playing around with SQL strings in VB 2008, and trying to retrieve records from a database and display them in a data grid view. This is the part of the code that gets the fields and displays them in the data grid view:

This is the hardest part of LinqtoSql database handling operations in visual basic 2008 I ever encountered,w/c is the update operation cause Ive been posting this thread several times from the other forum site but noone yet was able to answer my question,examples were given but its not efficient cause it won't specify based on the codes i gave and i know its not easy but im still hoping that one of the answerers of this forum will be able to resolve this particular linqtosql operation codes. I used textboxes in manipulating all data into the database such as displaying records, adding records, & updating records, basically I used with textboxes in doing those database operations. I will give you 3 block of codes w/c corresponds those database operations I used and differentiate from each other inorder for us to determine why one of them has no progress or won't do its operation w/c is the update operation...
*************Block of Codes#1(Adding Records)*************
Private Sub Button1_Click(------------------) Handles Button1.Click
Dim db As New memrecDataContext()
[code]....
I would like you to identify,differentiate, or troubleshoot the block of codes#3, or anyhow, why it has no progress at all or it won't edit and change the records but it runs and no error in regards with its code, and the other 2 blocks of codes were able to successfully do its operations.I was just wandering why only the block of codes#3 is not doing its operation successfully when you change the record being displayed in the textbox.Is there a possible way to edit records in the textboxes?If there is.... Is it possible to debug the block of codes#3 to successsfully do its operation? If you could possibly give an example,can you based it on the block of codes#3?
I am looking at Visual Basic 2008 Step By Step. I need to read a flat file and insert the records into my SQL database. My code so far:

The INPUT line needs to be fixed. From what I can see, I need to move it all to a single field and use a split to parse it, correct? As I look at the entries on this site, all the code seems to use stream readers. Why would the book not do that? Am I missing something?
I've done what I thought was a lot of work with DateTime and Timespan but what I am trying to do now I cannot figure out. It seems simple enough but I can't think of the code I need to make it work >.<
Currently I am using a timer to tic on 1000ms to count down a timespan. However, what I would like to do is set a timer for 30 minutes. I would like to display the minutes:seconds of the timer on a label and perform actions when the minutes and seconds are specific values, say minutes = 5 AND seconds = 0 to perform an action when the timer reaches 5 minutes exactly.
My goal is to have a 30 minute timer that performs actions at specific times, then when the timer reaches 0:00 it restarts at 30:00 This seems like such a simple task but I cannot for the life of me figure out where to start.
Inside one of my functions, i load up an xml then retrieve the relevant data like:
vb.net
'// load up all the fields we will need to work with
Dim firNam As String = XMLItem("hiddenFieldsName0").InnerText
[Code].....
Don't exist, i was wondering if there was a way to check how many lines there is in the xml and then load them? or is there an easier way i could do this?
I am working on creating a program that records animal data (wombats) and stores it into a database, using vb.net. I am in a "survey of programming languages" course and have a professor who doesn't teach. There is no text book for this course.I am working a VB Form project to take a URL, grab the HTML source code, parse out all words, and count the occurrences of each word on the page. I have built the form, and written the code to parse the words and store them in an array. What is the most efficient way to count the occurrences of each individual word in that array (case insensitive), sort the results decreasing from most frequent, and display the results of the ten most used words. I will be displaying the results in two separate listboxes on my form. 1 listbox shows the words, and the other shows the number of occurrences.

I have a listbox with the numbers from 1 to 20 in it. If I add one of these 20 numbers, the number should be added in the richtextbox and they should be counted together with the last outcome I had. And this new outcome should be shown in label "lblTotal. If I add a new number into the richtextbox with this button. This new number should be added under the last number in the richtextbox and it should counted with the last outcome I had. This way I can count how many points I have.

This is my first time posting in a forum like this, so please excuse me if I accidentally break any thread rules (btw, where can i find these?). I am very new to Visual Basic and have been trying to teach myself as I create this program. I have experience with macros in excel so I do understand some of the coding, but definitely nowhere near being proficient. I am using Visual Basic 2008 Step by Step (Michael Halvorson) to teach myself.
I am trying to create some code in my program that will allow the user to open an excel file and then return the number of rows and columns in the worksheet. There will only be 1 worksheet in the workbook (since this is just a small part of a larger program I am writing). I already tested the code that will open the file in another program and it worked fine; the thing that is catching me is the row and column counts. I'm a bit stuck here and was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. Here is the code as follows: Code: I have another sub for a quit button which I chose to leave out. The last line for the MessageBox is causing me problems.
Im using VB.NET 2005 i want to sum two records in database. So when i retreive them to display in my textbox they already sum. the numbers are in text.
this is my code.

I have the code below which does work, but I need to add further functionality to it. The functionality I want to add to it is the text I have commented in the code below.

Before the if statement, I want to find out if the database already has records with the username in the strUser variable.
