View 4 RepliesI'm currently developing an application for a POS Terminal using VB.net. Our project is approaching the last stage of development and I've been tasked to create 2 installers. 1 for Initial Installation, and the other for upgrade installation.
The project is composed of several elements. These are:
1. The application executable
2. Common DLLs that we developed
3. some resources (.resx and XML)
The requirement for the upgrade installer is that only those files with modification should be installed. (i.e. if only the xml or resx files are modified those are the only items that will be reinstalled, since the size of the upgrade installer is a consideration so we cannot reinstall everything).
I'm using Visual Studio 2005 for my deployment project but I'm a bit confused about how to set the properties of each file in such a way that during the upgrade, only the files that were modified would be updated and the rest of the files will not be removed since I'm setting RemovePreviousVersion property to True. I have a hunch that I need to do something with the custom action but I haven't been able to figure it out. The upgrade installer setup is almost the same as the initial installer except that all files are excluded.I tried to acquire a copy of Phil Wilson's book (The definitive guide to Windows Installer) but its not available in our local bookstore and it would take too long to order it.
Basically while tinkering with the settings/properties there are instances where the dll was not updated and there are also times when the application exe was removed.
I already verified that the Product code is the same for both installers and that I'm sure that the version number is being incremented for each upgrade.
If I will be redoing both installers from scratch, how should I go about it?
I'm also confused about the Condition property and the transitive property.
Triying to use the built in Visual Studio 2010 to install a couple of files and after that is done to run another installer package (3rd Party Installation Wizard).
View 1 RepliesIn the past I used VB6 to create my apps and used Wise Installer (v9) to create the install package. It was easy because it would read my VB app and automatically setup the file for me. All I had to do was add the numerous other associated files and I was done. Obviously that program is a bit outdated and does not (to my knowledge) have the same capability with a .NET project. Is there any installer out there that does have that capability and does not cost an arm and a leg?
View 10 RepliesI am currently in the process of creating a simple installer to copy files that come with my program and move them into another directory (a game, which I modded, I decided to create an installer to make it easier for people to install). However, I am looking around and trying to find out if it's possible to compile the files into one .EXE instead of a .EXE and a folder containing the files. Whether VS 2008 can do this, I don't know. If it doesn't, is there another program which can compress it into a standalone .EXE?

I have written a program in Visual Basic 10 and all is well. I have published it and have been burning the result to a cd and installed it on various computers, however it is the click once app, which has been fine till now. What I need to do now is to have the program install the .exe file and associated files (non click once app) to a specific drive on a computer or network computer. I have searched the net for instructions on how to initiate the windows installer and have failed. is there a program that you can select the source files then point to the installation folder tell it to go and an installation package gets made that I can burn to disk.
View 3 RepliesI have a MS Visual Studio .NET project created. I also went through the basic steps to add a setup project which created both an .MSI and a setup.exe file under the "Release" folder within the Debug folder. When I ran the setup.exe it installed the website on my http:localhost/Program/default.aspx which is fine and all..
My only problem is that the website does not have some of the customized icons that should be displayed, some of the other files are also missing such as "filename.txt" found in the main directory of my program used for specific calculations. I guess my two questions are:How do I add "All" the files inside my project to the .MSI?? The Website works fine, but its missing some files.
My second question, what if I "Remove" the program? Will it delete all directories, even files manually added to some folders AFTER the installation? For example: Lets say that my website contains a folder called "Data" which gathers data for specific purposes. The "Data" folder is often changed to replace outdated "Data", so when I need to make an update to the program the "Data" should not be removed, my 'client' should be able to just Add/Remove the program to update the program but all the other files should remain unchanged.
I have a problem here. I want to distribute .net framework and windows installer along with my app installation file. The questions:1. Is it legal? Windows installer, yes it is legal. I don't know about .net framework 3.52. Which folder do I have to put the files? I tried the publish, debug, and root folder of the application, none works. I select download from the same location of my application in clickonce.
View 3 RepliesI've decided to go with a Windows Installer (Setup Project) in VS Prof, rather than ClickOnce,I've added this project to my main project, and have right clicked and selected 'View -> Launch Conditions', it requires the .netframework 3.5.21022...
But I've created the installer project for .NET 2.0 framework, is this going to stop someone from installing the project without .NET framework 3/3.5?EDIT: I've found under the properties of that installer project, that .NET framework 3.5 and Windows Installer 3.1 was selected as a prerequisite, unchecked those, and checked .NET Framework 2.0, however the version under the launch condition .NET Framework is still 3.5, it should be 2.0

View 8 RepliesRecently I created one windows form application and also created setup project using VS2008.My application works with external software, which needs to be available on the PC.I want to bundle this external application installer in my installer, so that I can check if it is already installed and if not then install it and then install my application.I figured out how to work with pre-requisites that Setup project identifies such as .net framework?
View 1 RepliesI have a ClickOnce app that has been working fine for a couple months, until a day or two back some internal politics borked the server. The result of this was that the path for ClickOnce during install changed just slightly at one intermediate level. It used to have /is/ in the path, and the is has changed to something else. I changed everything I could find, including recreating the whole target directory in IIS on the server. However, when I publish, though the link is correct, installation is failing. The log shows that, after checking and installing some prerequisites, the installation is attempting to go back to that /is/ path to find the app for installation.
Can anybody suggest where that invalid path is located? I have gone through every property I can find in Project|Properties, and they are correct. I have looked in App.config, and that is correct. Where else should I be looking?
I downloaded this project which is in c sharp: [url] that guys sets his startup object as SID.Installer.BootStrap.Program. I created a windows forms application in vb wanting to do what he did. Probelm is I don't get my program class as a startup. Mine has dropdowns for startup form which I can only set as Form1.

I am using the windows installer which comes with VS 2008 to deploy my software. My initial deployment went well and I have several happy customers now. Unfortunately, one of my users found a bug. I have been able to locate and repair the issue- a simple math error in one of my forms. Now I need to deploy the repair to my existing customers without causing them too much headache in the update or, worse yet, inadvertantly deleting their stored database files.I know I can have them back up their existing db file, reinstall thenew app, and replace the new db files with their backup versions- but what a pain in the neck that will be, and it really won't look too professional, either.Does anyone know how to produce a patch to replace only the form that was repaired? Or, can I somehow exclude installing the new database files in the patch? I know the solution revolves around the Upgrade Code and Product Code, but I'm not putting the information together in my head very well.
View 6 RepliesI need help changing the default installation directory for a deployment package installer. The application's default directory is currently: [ProgramFiles][Manufacturer][ProductName].
What would I change this to, so that I can install the software directly on the root drive; Such as 'C:ManufacturerProductName'?
I have code/support an application built on .NET framework that has always run on .NET 2. This year we are upgrading the application to use .NET 3.5 (or 4?). In preparing for this change we noticed that that Offline Installer (required for our customer base) for .NET 3.5 is 200+ MBs bigger than the .NET 4 offline installer.
Here are my questions. Why is the dotnet 3.5 installer so much bigger than the 4 offline installer?
Can we TARGET .NET 3.5 but distribute .NET 4. In other words, is .NET 4 backwards compatible? Assuming that .NET 4 was the only installed .NET could application still target earlier frameworks?
IF our application is compiled for x86 CPU (rather than Any CPU) do you still have to distribute the x64/x86 Client Profile or can we just distribute the x86 Client Profile? In other words, can we distribute the x86 Client Profile even though it will be installed on x64 machines if our app is compiled for x86 target CPU? Any risks or gotchas for doing this?
The issue is that if we upgrade our app to target .NET 4 there are a lot of application servers that we also have to upgrade which effects a number of other applications.
I'm making a simple program that moves files around. I want to have the interface almost exactly like an installer does, meaning there is a next and back button, etc. Would I use multiple forms to do that? Or is there a control I'm missing?

View 18 RepliesI have made my own installer over the last 6-9 months.Let me explain how it works. It's designed for monetization. We have a hook product and 3 to 4 additional pieces of software that we offer the user. When an offer is accepted our installer pings a website(PHP) that is linked to a mysql database. It makes a value increase by one when pinged. This represents how many accepts for offer A we have. For some reason we are getting flagged by some AVs and it is because of the http web requests to these reporting urls.

View 2 RepliesI have a VB app that uses a sqlServerCE database. Everything works quite fine on my computer.
When I try to install it on other computers I run into problems. The message "Unable to load the native components of SQL Server Compact corresponding to the ADO.net provider of version 8080"
I am testing on a Win XP virtual machine.
My first attempt was to use InstallShield LE to create the installer. I defined ServerCE as a prerequisite and when I check in add/remove programs it exists, but I still get the error.
Then I tried building the installer with the Microsoft installer. This adds the dll to the program directory automatically, but I still get the error.
I read the KB article referenced (874247) and recompiled the app as an x86 application only, and rebuilding the installer, but have the same problem.
