I am getting the warning that the function doesn't return a value on all code paths.

I'm trying to get my head around this issue, on a few of my functions i get a warning " 'functionDealWithHiddenFields' doesn't return a value on all code paths. A null reference exception could occur at run time when the result is used."Example function:
vb.net Function functionDealWithHiddenFields(ByVal HTML As String, ByVal numHiddenFields As Integer, ByVal X As Integer)
i get a warning " 'functionDealWithHiddenFields' doesn't return a value on all code paths. A null reference exception could occur at run time when the result is used."
Example function:
vb.net Function functionDealWithHiddenFields(ByVal HTML As String, ByVal numHiddenFields As Integer, ByVal X As Integer) Try
[code]....
The functions still work correctly (as far as i can tell) what would i need to do to the above function to remedy that warning?
I have a function to recursively search through windows (and their child windows) to find specific ones, it works exactly as expected, however it causes "function doesn't return a value on all paths" warning. This is the only warning in my entire program, and although it might be silly, I'm interested in knowing if there is a way to stop this error from occurring, but still allowing the function to work properly.[code]
I have myself a problem here. I created myself 2 classes like the ones below:
1) Vehicles 2) SportsCars
I then created some "Properties" like the ones below:[code]I want to get the price of a selected car, but when i try to build i get the following error: Property 'Cars' doesn't return a value on all code paths. A null reference exception could occur at run time when the result is used.
What does this warning mean and how can i get it to go away.? Warning1Function 'ipAddr' doesn't return a value on all code paths. A null reference exception could occur at run time when the result is used.C:Documents and SettingsHP_AdministratorDesktopMoney Manager in MysqlMoney Manager V1connection.vb385Money Manager V1
I am writing a program with multiple forms (for inputing loan/financial information - so they are set up exactly the same albeit a form number (ie: 1-6)) that feed into a summary page form to display each individuals form's information. When the user closed a financial form, it then feeds the information to a summary page using the code I have below: [Code]. I am new to working with functions, and have not been able to find anything that can show me how to fill multiple textboxes with them (I only know how to return a variable using the function to work a calculation). Any way that I can write a function (or any other call) for this would save me a tremendous amount of coding, and make debugging worlds easier.
I'm having trouble with a function returning two values. Each value contains a string, how can I return these values and have each one of them be stored in one independent variable. [code] I'm trying to return the hashed text with the salt and the generated salt, how can I do this?
1. I would like to know why a Return statement is needed in the function in the first set of code, but not in the second(even though it still works with the Return statement). The functions are called the same way, so what is the difference?2. Why in the second code, the variable FutureValue is allowed to have the same name as the function? But when, in the first set of code, I try to rename the variable "discountPercent1"(in the function) to the function name "SetDiscountPercent", VB 2008 Epress gives the error message "The name conflicts with an existing symbol with the same name"?

I am running a query in a thread but I can't figure out how to get the result back to the calling function. I am doing something like this:
Threading.ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem(AddressOf RunThread, "some query string") Private Function RunThread(ByVal stateInfo As Object) As String Dim myQuery As String = stateInfo.ToString
I have created my own ListViewItem class, and added some custom properties to it of attributes. What I have at the moment is a tooltip which shows all of those custom properties (about 18 of them). What I want to be able to do is if multiple are selected, to show a tooltip, but if a property (say Title) for all of them is "My Title" it will show that, otherwise if they are different, I would like it to show "VARIES"Is there a way of declaring a parameter in my function and return a value? [code]
I'm trying to use ResolveUrl() to set some paths in the code behind of a custom ASP.NET user control. The user control contains a navigation menu. I'm loading it on a page that's loading a master page. When I call ResolveUrl("~") in my user control it returns "~" instead of the root of the site. When I call it in a page I get the root path as expected. I've stepped through with the debugger and confirmed, ResolveUrl("~") returns "~" in my user control code behind. Is there some other way I should be calling the function in my user control code behind to get the root path of the site?
Using VB 2008 with Access database I'm trying to make a search field (txtSearch), but I'm not getting success with code in the button (cmdSearch). I'm making this manually, not using the Query Builder, and the result will be displayed in a datagridview (added to the form dragging the table from the Datasource Panel). So, the datagrid is already populated (with no SQL). What code must I use for the cmdSearch, to return the txtSearch.Text (or part of it) in the Datagridview? I've tried this: "Select Product, Price, Quantity FROM tblProducts WHERE Product LIKE txtSearch.Text & '*'" (but it doesn't work).
Just so it's known, this question is mostly academic, even though I tried to use the concept in a real-world solution. I realize the example is contrived, but I believe the concept is valid.I want to write some fluent code like this:
[code]...
I realize that I can't force an anonymous type into a specific type (like implementing an interface or some other class), and I don't want the overhead of defining a specific class just to match my desired fluent name with the actual method name. So I was able to make the code work like this:
copy(my_first_file).to.Invoke(my_second_file)So there is no IntelliSense or type awareness there, and I have to include the Invoke in order to have the method run. How can I get more type safety and exclude the Invoke method, under these constraints: Anonymous Type returned from Method No additional classes or interfaces Preferably, I do not want to pass in another parameter to the copy() method that tells what type to return, unless copy becomes a generic method (but I think that means defining another class/interface, which I don't want to do)
know in 2008 if you have procedures or functions. that there's a little "-" or "+" that lets you expand and collapse that procedure or function? I was wondering if anyone knew how to create a section so I could collapse it within the procedure? The only way I know it will do it between functions or procedures and things like that but not within the procedure.
How do I work out if 2 paths penetrate each other. I say penetrate as I do not just want to work out if they intersect or not ... as intersecting will return false if one path is completely within the other.
I am making an appilcation which displays images from a target folder. It was orginally using an sql .sdf file as its data source but the data source has been changes to a .mdb access database. The code does not seen to update the tabe, and being pretty new to this would like some help on how to do this as currently the code is stating the following error:Object reference not set to an instance of an object. This is the code which allows the customer to choose a target folder to display the file images, but the files will not update to the database: [code]
I've search for this, but haven't come up with anything. Anyhow, I'm wanting to do something along the lines of contracting the path so you see the start and end, along the lines of:
