VS 2008 - Fuzzy Search With Suggestion If No Match Found
Jun 26, 2009
I'm creating a search application that needs to have a fuzzy search. Basically if there are 0 results, I need to provide a suggestion, much like google. For example, if I type "Californea", I need my program to suggest "California" after doing a query on my DB for similarity.

I have a list of names of players and their names in some game. Now an administrator of that game might want to contact one of the players by sending him a message. He does that by writing a command that basically has the format "tell <player> <message>", where <player> is the name of the player. The problem is simple: player names might be quite complicated and long (it's their screen name not their real name), and it would take the admin quite some time to find out how to spell the name exactly and he will probably make a few mistakes. Basically, having the admin type out the exact name is not practical. So I am trying to implement a 'fuzzy logic' search (is that even the correct term?) but with a twist, I guess. The idea is that the admin can type just part of the name and is even allowed to make a couple mistakes. For example, suppose a player has a screen name of "Mr.Smith34", then the admin should be able to type, for example.[code]
The problem now is that there can be absolutely no ambiguity in which player is meant. Instead of sending a message (which is quite harmless) the admin should also be able to 'kick' or ban someone from a game server, banning them from ever playing there again. Obviously, the admin should then not accidently ban a player named "Mrs.Smith" when he meant "Mr.Smith"! My solution (unless someone else can come up with something better) is to just not allow the command if there are multiple matches. If the admin searches for 'smith' and there are multiple names that are similar to 'smith' (maybe even 'sith' or similar) then I disregard that search and tell the admin he needs to try again with a more specific name.(If all else fails he can always look up the ID of the player and use that, which should be foolproof as long as the admin doesn't make a mistake and picks the wrong ID..., but that is even more work it does not have preference). But this brings further problems. The example I just gave might be good: suppose there's a player "Mr.Smith" and a player "Sith". If the admin searches for 'Smith' then there should be no question who he meant (Mr.Smith), but I am sure any fuzzy logic implementation would count Sith as a very close match... Another thing is that my solution of only allowing the search if there is just a single match probably wouldn't work. I have never used fuzzy logic searching before, but I can imagine some names being marked as 'slightly similar' even when they are completely different ('smi' might match 'smith', but also 'ims' perhaps, in which case it would possibly match a whole new range of names), even though 'for humans' it is clear which result is meant.
I am assuming any fuzzy search would return the matches and rate them according to how similar they are to the search term. Perhaps I can choose some kind of cut-off value, where any matches that are less than 30% similar (I've no idea just guessing here) are assumed not equal whereas higher ranked matches are assumed a possible match. Perhaps this makes it easier (perhaps harder, I dunno), but I forgot to mention that the search term cannot contain any spaces. Player screen names can contain spaces though. I am thinking to just strip out the spaces of each name before starting the search, but perhaps there are better solutions in combination with fuzzy searching...

I'm trying to search for text that is known to be in a TextBox.
Once it is found, I want to return the line number it was found on.
Also, I would like to know how to delete all blank lines from a TextBox.
These two problems have been plaguing me for the last 2 days.

I have a IF statement which is checking each row in the data table (for a match) and ELSE statement with commands which are executed if the If statement is not satisfied. Now I would like to write like so that it goes to the Else part BUT ONLY for values which are not satisfied in the IF statement. If I am more specific; I would like to calculate values if a match is found and just print them if it is not fond (usually there are both cases). Now the problem is the text that is marked red; if there is a match found I don't want it processed BUT if the match is found I do. How can I write that?
currencyPosition = 0
Dim d As Integer = w + 100
For Each currency In Ary
If Not currency = "" Then
For i = 0 To dt.Rows.Count - 1
[Code] .....

Here's the situation: I've got a form that has
- RichTextBox
- OpenButton (to load RTF file)
- SaveButton (to save RTF file after editing)
- Textbox (for search phrase)
- SearchButton
- ExitButton
- 2 RadioButtons (WholeWord and MatchCase search)
All of them are working just the way I want them to except search features; I don't know how to write them properly. At the moment, they search and highlight only the first word they encounter. E.g. say I search for word "the" in the document, only the first "the" it encounters is highlighted. The rest is just untouched.
I understand this is because I've only got few lines of simple code as follows
If rtfText.Find(txtSearch.Text, RichTextBoxFinds.WholeWord) = -1 Then
MessageBox.Show("No results returned. Please try again.", "No matching results.", MessageBoxButtons.OK, MessageBoxIcon.Information)
End If
I did try a few other snippets I found on the Internet including While loop but they didn't work as I wanted them to, and I couldn't understand them either. What I want is, which ever search option is used, when the matching result is found; it will highlight that word and when I click it again it will move onto another word. If I keep clicking, it will highlight the same words (but located in different areas) throughout the whole document and at the end, it will send back to the first matching word. Just like Adobe Reader search.

I'm trying to search files for matches, and depending on what catagory the match is under, do a certain function... Say I have a .txt file that looks like this
[Code]...
Then I have a form with Button1 and Textbox1. Say I type "Cat" into Textbox1 and press Button1. It would then bring up a MsgBox that says "Match found under Animal catagory". But if I put "Three" in Textbox1, the messagebox would say "Found under Numbers catagory".

I am trying to search an array and then say whether the result was found or not.
So far i have:
Option Explicit On
Module Module1
Const MaxAnimals = 20
[Code]....
Now i have looked online and all of them seem to give you like ready made things on VB but i have not used them yet and i know there is an easy way of doing it as my friend managed to do it before but i can't get hold of him.
Basically it is a program (There is more of it but this is not necessary for this) which puts the names of animals into an array then you can either add another animal, or in the sub i am doing at the moment view all the animals in the array but i can't work out how!

I was hoping someone could assist with the following coding; I am trying to search a very large csv file (approx 200,000 lines) for a user defined string eg "0100020789" and I essentially want to print all the lines that contain this to a text box on screen. Please not that the csv file does not have standardised column headings, each line is different. There would be approx 5 lines that contain the input string.
I am concerned with the v large csv i am using which will prob slow everything down, but then I thought if simple text pad application can search for a string in complete files with similar sizes like that and return a result in less than 1second, then it must be do-able.

I look at hundreds of VB.Net user interfaces through the internet and they all look horribly unsophisticated from a graphics point-of-view.Compare this to the backgrounds seen on tv broadcast that use blurred line gradients to create graphics that have some interesting appeal and draw the eye to them (at least my eye).I've attached some sample screenshot grabs below that I have annotated with magenta rects showing the interesting sections. What types of graphics routines can produce these types of graphic effects? The options that I have identified so far:
1.) More carefully done line smearing (see below..)
2.) Line drawing with a VB.Net version of the "Bresenham's line drawing algorithm"(as passel mentions in this post) (that might allow a specialized set anti-aliasing routines - like a wu algorithm).
3.) Line drawing with some Gaussian blurring as seen in the attachment to this post from my Perlin Noise thread.
4.) Possibly a gradient shaped by a vector GraphicsPath?
5.) Some other VB.Net gradient generating method?Possible the use of multiple passes with an alphafade brush?
6.) Last resort: manipulating the colors of individual pixels with lockbits marshal copying (highly undesirable).
I've done a fairly complete survey of whats out there on the internet for VB.Net samples for drawing lines to see if any of them combined line drawing with gradient effects and found very little.I played around with some code I found that did line drawing through mouse dragging and managed to achieve what I call the "line smearing" effect.I've attached my Line_Smearing_Demo below..As yet I have been unable to combine lines with shaped bezier curves,to produce Guilloche/Lissajous/complex Spirograph patterns like those seen on this page.

I have attempted to make my first 3 tier application. In the process I have run into one problem I am yet to find an optimal solution for. Basically all my objects use an IFillable interface which forces the implementation of a sub as follows
Public Sub Fill(ByVal Datareader As Data.IDataReader) Implements IFillable.Fill
This sub then expects the Ids from the datareader will be identical to the properties of the object as such.
Me.m_StockID = Datareader.GetGuid(Datareader.GetOrdinal("StockID"))
In the end I end up with a datalayer that looks something like this.
Public Shared Function GetStockByID(ByVal ConnectionString As String, ByVal StockID As Guid) As Stock
Dim res As New Stock
Using sqlConn As New SqlConnection(ConnectionString)[code].....
Mostly this pattern seems to make sense. However my problem is, lets say I want to implement a property for Stock called StockBarcodeList.Under the above mentioned pattern any way I implement this property I will need to pass a connectionstring to it which obviously breaks my attempt at layer separation.how I might be able to solve this problem or am I going about this the completely wrong way? I am deliberately trying to avoid using the dataset in any form.

When I type, it should show a grid for the suggestion have the typed value.for an example if I want to search a student "ashish". As soon as I type A in textbox, it should show its First Name, Last name, Address, its image and some other info into a grid or grid like format beneath that control. All those info will come from Database.

I've got a basic email application set up, and I'd like the "To" field (TextBox1) to be an autocomplete textbox.I'd also like the user to be able to edit what their contacts are, and so be able to add named to the autocomplete suggestions.I can get TextBox1's autocomplete suggestion to come from TextBox2's current Text - however this means I can only have one name as a suggested contact.Ideally, something like a list box would be ideal, so the user can add and remove names, and this list would then provide the source for the autocomplete.

I am very confused about the database type to be used in my vb.net application. I have been using SSCE database, but for that user has to download and install SSCE, which many of my users do not want. If I use Access, the security issue is very very serious.I have downloaded a few database apps from the internet, which donot require any such thing to be installed and also I see no known database format in the application folder. I wonder what kind of techniques they are using.

The 1 and 2 indicate positions I have a position listbox for each position. So 3 listbos, first one contains the names on form load, 2 other empty listboxes one for position 1 other for position 2...I have tried the following
If xReservationListBox.SelectedIndex = xReservationListBox.FindString("1") Then
'MessageBox.Show("Found It")
xSpot1ListBox.Items.Add(xReservationListBox.Items(0))
