Let's say, when you click a button it just opens a specified .txt file and adds the data of it to a listbox. I mean automatically, without that file opening dialog showing?
View 1 RepliesI would like to step through each *.txt file in a given directory, open it, find and replace all, perhaps a thousand, occurances of a given string (e.g. "00/00/00"), then close and save file, and step to next one in the directory to do the same find and replace. I've been looking at filestream classes and regular expressions but don't see a clear way to do this.

I put my code together and after running it look at the file and it's unchanged. After looking closer it appears the problem is the find & replace operation I am doing on the string. Here is my code:

So I want my program to open up an empty notepad window, and then fill it in and let the user save it as whatever they want. Is this possible in VB .NET, and if so, do you have any pointers? Note: I don't want to save to write to a file and then save it. I know how to do that. I want to write to a notepad window (an unsaved file). I hope this makes sense and I hope it's possible.

I ported the code from VB6, but the performance of the VB6 write#fileID, vars) in VB.NET, is very bad, it introduces a delay of about one hour. I have tried out the streamwrite, and its performance is good; it's actually faster than VB6 write.
I am using the write(string) method for the streamwriter, and I am concatenating the values using variable names as follows: streamwriter.write(var1 &","& var2 &","&....&","& var n &","). This version of write enables me to have more than one variable written to file per statement. The problem that I have is that the content of the file is incorrect, unlike the one produced by the slow VB6 write in VB.NET.
Is there a better way of achieving this requirement; preferably using the streamwriter? I cannot use the streamwriter.write(double), becuase I'll have to use multiple lines as I am writing about 800 vars in convergence test loops resulting in a total of just over 2 million writes.

I current have an app that I am trying to create. I have 2 List boxes, a textbox, and a command button.What I am trying to do is take about 100 text files that all have certain text in them that I need to change at run time to whatever I put into the textbox. For instance Each Text file has my old company name and I want to be able enter my new name into the textbox and click the command button and the app will open each text file, find the text that I specify and replace it with my new name then save the file into a specified folder.What elements should I be studying to make this happen? So far this is what I've come up with:
OpenFileDialog - to open the file
StreamReader - to read the text files and find the text that I specified
**Not sure on the replace method**
StreamWriter - to write the text from the textbox to the new file
SaveFileDialog - to save the file to the specified location
I have to find a string in a huge text file ( ~ 50MB) and then replace it.Since it's quite huge I tend to open the file and then read line by line, and then replace the necessary line(s) (rather than "readall" the file of course).My question is how to replace the whole line?Let's say I found the line that should be replaced . I know I can create a copy file and copy all lines into there ... but I'd prefer to replace the line in the original file rather than creating a copy instance.

View 1 RepliesI read a csv file into my .net program using ado.net and display it in a datagridview.In the file I have two rows. The first column is a component id, and it is supposed to be numeric. But the user can edit the csv file before having my program load it, and accidentally put text there. That is something I want to edit when he presses a button to add the data to the database. So let's say he puts a value of A in the first record and a value of 1 in the second record. Or vice versa. What is displayed in the dgv is a blank in the first record and a 1 in the second, or 1 in first and blank in second. If both csv records are A, then what is displayed in the dgv is an A in both the first and second records. I don't understand what is happening. The fact that there sometimes is a numeric in the column makes it think it is a numeric field and therefore only display numerics and blank otherwise, and the fact that there's always text in the column makes the code know it is a text field?
