VS 2008 Proper Way To Pause/resume A Thread?
Oct 6, 2011I have a thread running on my application that checks a database every so often to decide whether or not to update nodes in a treeview.
Each treeview node represents a document and I have an open button that opens the document for the user.
When the document is opened, I wanted to suspend the thread that refreshes the node list until the document is closed.
I have MyThread.Suspend and MyThread.Resume. But the document viewer is on another thread.
I created functions for suspending/resuming the thread in the application. I have delegates in the viewer to call those functions from another thread. But I'm still getting an Error. "Thread is not user-suspended. Cannot be resumed" or something of the like.
But I realize that Suspend and resume are obsolete functions, so what class or objects should I be looking into and if it didn't take up too much of your time, a small example as well?

Dec 5, 2010In my application I have a loop that makes calls to a website to download data. I'm using a DownloadDataAsynch call with a handler.
I'm making many such calls in a loop. What I'd like to do is, if I have more than a certain number of replies pending, I should pause the loop and let the data handlers run.
How do I do that?

Jun 3, 2010Okay so I have a webbrowser that navigates to 1 page and I want it to wait 5 seconds and go to the next page, then I want it to wait 5 seconds and go to the next page I want it to navigate to and so on... I tried thread.sleep but I don't want to have the form stop completely in case someone wants to minimize the form. I thought about using a timer to tell it how long it wants to stop and go.

VS 2010 - Using System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(5000) To Let My App Pause/sleep For Some Time
May 25, 2010Currently I'm using System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(5000) to let my app pause/sleep for some time. This works great but I can't open my app anymore when it's sleeping and it uses about 25% of my CPU. I guess there must be a better way to do this. I also tried using a timer but that didn't work out to well for me..

Nov 8, 2011What my program does is load a file (password list), then progressively reads each line of text in the file whilst writing each line to a new file. After X amount of lines have been written, it should start writing the lines of text to a new document until the initial password list has been split into X amount of password lists. The problem I have is that after hours of tweaking, all I can get it to do is write either blank ocuments, or write all of the lines to only one file. I really need it to be able to split into multiple files, preferably at runtime rather than loading a whole text document into the program in a textbox or array then writing it to new files.Below is the source:

2) I have some solutions under 2010. In 2 or 3, while debugging, I can change instructions without restarting the application. In others, I cannot change anything (Is like readonly), Looking in 'My Applications', Tab 'Debug', Option 'Configuration' I can choose several Options. In the applications I can debug, the default is 'Active (Debug)'; in the others is 'Active (Release)'. If I change the options, the word 'Active' remains attached to the original option.

Jun 10, 2010im trying to terminate a threading.thread using thread.abort the thread runs a download connection so is usually in the middle of socket.recieve or socket.send or socket.connect when aborting i just want to terminate the thread no matter what thread.abort raises an MDA excpetion. so i ticked it off in the debug exceptions menu. now it doesnt raise an exception, but the thread simply wont terminate. my program wont close unless i press top in the debugger.i cant pause downloads because i cant terminate the thread this code wasn't working?

as for the exception concerning threads being aborted from other threads being dangerous, how is it possible to send a message from a main thread to another thread to abort itself? as far as i know the only way to a abort one thread from another is to just kill it (because i dont know of ways for a thread to communicate with another).

I've tried raise event in the unzip thread to a sub in the parent but this runs the sub from the unzip thread. With ApartmentState set to STA, so that I could use a save dialog, this was OK until I displayed a messagebox which was hidden behind the main UI(and whatever I did I could not get it to the front).

why I get this error message because it doesn't occur normally if I open Form2 after closing Form1, it only occurs when I open Form2 after closing Form4.

With that in mind, I tried this:

However, the rest of the code runs when the loop finishes, not waiting for all the spawned threads to finish. Since the rest of the code needs the threads to finish (otherwise the rest will error).

i used it and it works fine then. but as it is mentioned its not a good practice to use it. So what should i do? is it ok if i use this as i am not able to use correct practice. Mine application is not for enterprise purpose. its just my class project, and it works fine even if i put application working in background. System works ok. I dont know how to correct this error.As i dont have that much knowlege of threads.
So please guide me how to fix this in correct way otherwise i am force to go for bad programming practice

Oct 14, 2010I am moving a lot of data to MS Excel from my application. I use a conditional statement to choose which Excel page the data is transferred into. Then a For Next statement to divide the data into various areas on the Excel sheet.The first sheet will always work correctly, but on the next conditional statement to chose the next Excel sheet no data transfers when running the program. If I step the program by hand all data all code works fine. I believe I need to pause between the conditional statements but I have been unable to get one to work.In the following code I have been trying to get a pause between to conditional statement to no avail.

Jan 26, 2009Right now in my app I have a Pause and a Continue button, basically I enable/disable the controls on the form. Is there a better way to handle this.
Is there a way to lock the cursor in the control that it is in when the Pause button is clicked and then release it when the Continue botton is clicked?
