Is it possible to change source path of content files in setup project? I need to copy some of files located in source directory to installation directory while installation.
View 2 RepliesUnder VB.Net 2005, I created a Setup Project which produced installation files for a windows application. I placed the mdb file in the User's Application Data Folder and remapped the DataDirectory to Environment.SpecialFolder.ApplicationData at runtime. Unfortunately, sometimes the system just did create the mdb file at the Application Directory.
An example was that I installed the program in Windows 7 under a normal user account. I chose inside the installer that the program would be made available to everyone. After installation, the mdb file would be created automatically for the Administrator account but not for the normal user account. For XP, the whole thing worked fine. I am tempted to write a routine to check and create the mdb file if it is not present, but why does this happens and what other opinions do I have?
I am using Visual Studio 2008 Setup project. I need to copy one folder and the sub folders into the program files but when I tried to copy or add the folder to "Application Folder" in File System editor, I am able to add only files and not folders.

1- i add Project Setup Project for my Project for Visual Studio 2008 Deploy & setup Type Projects and make it with output option and detect dependices
2- i try make it with Setup Factory 8.2.1
3- i try with MSI Factory 2.0
4 i try with Setup Factory 6.0
and after making installer copying it to my test virtual Machine or my friend lap and install it i get this error when try to run my application :

i don want to build a deploy project but just a normal VB.NET Project and that project is kind of extracting files so how can i include files (compress) to project executable app then when i click "Extract" it will extract.last time, I use CHILKATZIP and ZIPForge.NET but it only compress another exe howabout its own project.Thanx,Code Quest
View 1 RepliesI have created a Windows Application in Visual Studio 2005(VB .Net) and used Sql Server 2000 as Backend,Now I want to know how to create a Setup of my Project so that I can install it on clients machine.I have tried by Adding a setup and Deploy project in My application but my setup file include SQL Database files(.mdf,.ldf) and my client has Win Xp installed so my Setup file is asking for sql server connection,but on clients machine Sql server 2000 can't be installed as its compatibility.

View 2 RepliesUsing 2008 EXPRESS. I went to project properties and (1) renamed the assembly name and (2) the root namespace fields with my desired name. (But didn't rename the project).
NOW --When I took the setup disk to another computer, it "crashes" can't even post the warning it's trying to give. (Yet, it was fine when I left everything alone, the namespace and rootname that is).
All I wanted was a setup file with a name other than my project name.
I'm trying to add .lnk files to a setup project but am unsuccessful. I have 2 custom shortcuts that I created which link to a network share, but everytime I try to add them to the setup project in the users desktop or start menu, vs simply doesn't allow it. No message box or error box appears, I select the .LNK file to add and it "pretends" to add it and allows me to select it, but doesn't appear in the setup project folders.

It isnt in the project list for me to select.Are these types of projects not available in the express version?How can I make an installer, other than using one of the setup and deployment projects? View 3 RepliesI created a setup project along with my main program everything compiles ok and I'm able to install a successfully. The problem I am experiencing is when I try to install over the previous version. I have set the setup property RemovePreviousVersion to TRUE , DetectNewerInstalledVersion to TRUE and I also increment the Version number and choose Yes when prompted to automatically change the ProductCode.
What I find is that when I install my program, the date on a subfolder changes, I don't expect the dates of the support files to change. but I do expect the date of my main .exe file to change. Unfortunately it stays the same. Running the program also shows that this file was not updated. I have read the MSDN articles on this but cannot figure it out.
I want to create a real setup project for my application so when someone want to download it he can run only setup, not default setup that provide me VB . How can I do that?

1, After I put company's logo at startup installation, there was still text shown up "Welcome xxxx setup.." together with the logo, how to remove it and display company's logo only? Also, if using text display and the text is too long, how to return to next line?

I've created a Setup project (in VB.Net 2008 Standard Edition) and I need to deploy some .rtf files in a specific folder for the user to edit. I've added these files to the project as content files but the Setup project installs them in Program File/MyApp along with the exe. As these rtf files need to be found easily by the user I need to specify a different folder on the hard drive. These are not mdb or xls files so are not used by the app itself. All the user needs to do is find them manually loading them into MS Word for editing. I don't need to load MS Word from the app, but I do need to deploy them so the user has access to them. How do I edit the file path so it does not bury them in Common Files or the User App Data or app folder itself? Ideally, since these are rtf files they could go in My Documents. (The app itself will work whether or not these files exist elsewhere.)
View 5 RepliesI am currently developing the 'solution' through the UI Dialog properties of VB 2008, so my application can be installed onto a computer .It works ok, installs successfully, creates the desktop icon, start menu icon and programs folder....... BUT, when I go into the Control Panel, the uninstall option is there, but not with my own icon it uses the Windows default icon.
View 2 RepliesI created a simple BMI calculator through the guide.I have built it and published it on my laptop running Vista Home Premium with .net 3.5 SP1 installed.I can run the setup and subsequent exe file fine on my machine but when I try it on my girlfriends netbook (one of those fiddly little things) it wont install saying that some of the files are missing. It is running XP and also has .net 3.5 SP1 on it.There are only 2 extra files in addidtion to the setup.exe that vb 2008 creates and they are the application manifest and the program icon, both of which are located with the setup.exe but it still won't install. It is an offline installation but won't run.I copied the bin folder from the project to the setup folder and tried that, still no joy, yet if I try and run the actual program directly it works?

I was alble to create the setup.exe fine but am struggling on how I can dictate where the files go. Looking at the application folder I can see the files I added but the all go to the application dir.
View 9 RepliesI've set up a basic loop to delete all the files in a particular folder. I've set the loop in a Try block so it doesn't crash the application when it gets to a file it can't delete. I'd like for the app to just pass over these type of files. At the moment, my loop stops completely when it gets to that exception.
View 1 RepliesI've finally got a project compiled and tested and ready to roll out.I have discovered that the "Publish" option is not what it seems, and that we must create a separate "Setup Project" to carry out the task of installing the files.This is not the most intuitive process I've seen, and the online help on that subject is not easy to understand.I was hoping that someone could direct me to a tutorial or guide that would step me through the specific approach I need. Many of the other guides online are vague and address multiple scenarios and do not separate the approaches very well.I have the contents of my project in /bin/release. It runs nicely by iteself with no errors.Here's what I need:
1. To create a setup exe that I can distribute that will install my software, with all of the supporting (resource) files and folders.
2. I need the setup process to force the installer to "agree" to a EULA.
3. I'd would like to provide an image on the installation screen/popup.
4. I would like the software registered in the registry and rely on it being there in the registry.

I new to this Forum and relatively new to VB programming. I have read some really good posts here and thought I would ask about a perplexing problem I'm having. I createdindows Form application, built it and deployed it with no problems. However, when I added a small block of code, re-built the app and went to add the app to the Project Output Group in the file system editor the project was not in the Project drop down list. I closed the Setup project and deleted it from the project folder and checked my code and re-built the app and tried the Set Up project again with the same result

The S&D project needs to contain 2 main folders (under User's Desktop) with various formats of files (xmls, txts, dlls) inside them and several subfolders. How can i copy/import these 2 folders and there sub-files/folders into my s&d project?
When adding them in the usual way, they are copied and defined a source path onto the current pc. You can understand what errors this might create when an another targeted pc does not contain those files to the exact location. Is there any way to copy them locally or somehow import them?
I'm getting familiar now with using the Dataset Designer and how it makes for quick and easy updates and query of tables. I use to use the OleDB commands and leave the Connection String as a Global Constant so I can easily change it if the server name changes, or if we have to re-direct the .NET to another instance of the database.
But now that I use the Dataset designer I'm concerned that I maintain flexibility and support in the long run. how the Dataset designer works and where it stores it's connection string info? And how difficult that would be to update. It looks like I modify the App.config file, but I'm unfamiliar with this.
What am I getting myself into? It looks like a standard XML file. Is that it?
if I use a third party distribution application like Setup2Go etc. to make my setup files, will my application run properly on user's computer?I mean how the required system files and dll files shall be included into my setup.exe?Does user need anything install, prior to my application's installation?
