VS 2008 Simple Network Client

I've written an app that gets an integer value every 500 ms from a MCU over usb. Works great. I want to get that same value over TCP/IP. Programming the MCU is no problem The problem is in VB.Net. I've read a bunch of sites and they seem to be overkill to what I want and just don't work for VS 2008. I just want to get that value and then manipulate it. I've tried the 'system.Net.Sockets' import and dimmed a 'New TcpClient', but one of the sites said to call the tcpClient.connect method and that doesn't come up in intellisense. Can someone help me just connect to a server with known IP address and Port, and read the integer 'x' every 500 ms?

Here is my idea so far: I have a bunch of computers connected in a local network. One of them is a MySQL server, one will have a vb.NET program wich will act as a "second server" and the rest will be different clients. What I want to do is that the "second server" will send out some kind of message or network package to some of the clients in the network, and they will execute a code based on what message it is, or what kind of package it is. I'll give you a simple example:

I have three computers in my house. I want to control them, like put to sleep, shutdown, display msgbox and so on. I want something very simple.
The server should have a window so i can write, something like: "Basement: shutdown". The client should not show. When the client receive its name and ": shutdown" it will then shutdown.
I have seen a bit on the 101 Samples for Visual Basic 2005 and "UsingSockets", but it don't have a server-form.

I have a client-side app which I am working on. As I start to enhance the app, I am starting to wonder whether or not I should be building a network side app instead. My app in its current form sits on the client side and generates some text and XML files which are stored locally on the client side. The user reads/write to these files. However, I want to start working with SQL AND the processing time of my app is starting to consume resources (i.e. time and CPU) on the client side.
Can someone provide me with some highl level feedback on what one would do to make their client-side app a network app that multiple users would have access to. I realize more detail would need to be provided in order to provide thorough answer. However at this point, I really just want to understand how a network app would differ from a client app from a programminga and deployment perspective. This is not necessarily a VB question. Howevever since I am working in VB I though I would start in this forum. Feel free to move to the appropriate forum if need be.

I'm trying to learn how to do some very simple client-server application programming.
Basically, I want to make a program (the server) that listens and waits, and when a commend is sent it will run a batch file or execute a line of code.
The client will just ask for the ip and send the command when a button is pushed.
Shouldn't be too hard right? So what are some good resources that you've used to get started?

If I decide to build this, this would probably be my first "large" project i've ever done myself. What I am looking to build is a very simple Chat/IM client to use for the users in our office network. It would just call us their Windows logon name and use that to IM and the like. I'm talking a very simple client, with a list of names of people who are logged into the network, and option to IM them and an option to do a multiple user chat. It doesn't have to be visually stunning.

I'm breaking my head over the next problem. I have 2 applications (client/terminal). the client reads out the webcam and generates an image. This image needs to be send to the terminal which can accept multiple clients. At the terminal all received images are placed in an ordered panel. The purpose of this application is to monitor multiple webcams. What i can't get to work is how to send it on the client side and receive on the terminal side.

I was wanting to make a simple client-server program.I saw some code for it and it was easy to understand but it was with winsock.
The program is:
Client: Clicks button.
Server: Recieves Text written in clients textbox.
Is there a reasonably easy way to do this?Maybe Net.Sockets or something similar?

I've made a simple knowledgebase program which contains example documents. The documents are stored in a folder, and in an accessdatabase stands the information about the documents. The program also includes a simple search option. The program itself is located in a folder on a network computer. It has to be a network program for collegues can add other examples. Now it gets weird. at least in my opinion. When I run the program locally -> no problem. When I run the program from another network PC -> no problem. But when I run the program from a network Thin Client -> shaboom..At least when I enter a search option and the connection to the database is opened:"Application attempted to perform an operation not allowed by the security pollcy. To grand this application the required permission, contact you system administrator or use the Microsoft .NET framework configuration tool."[code]Now I've found a LOT of topics in this forum and many others, and it's clear that apps from another network location are run without "full trust". And the trust issue can be handled with caspol or web.config. Although caspol is a mystery to me and web.config didn't seem to work. But since it's so explicitly crashing on Thin Clients.

I am creating a server-client type application that allows the network administrator to perform tasks on remote computers by using TCP sockets (TCPClient and TCPListener). The server application needs to send out a message to a client machine (with client application installed) and from this, the client application will send back the required data (i.e. system info, task progress etc). This part works fine. However, I am having trouble in getting the client application to constantly listen for an information request in the background. It should be listening whenever the application is running. What I want to do is to have an event handler which, when a message comes through, acts upon the instructions to send the relevant information back. The server does not need to constantly listen for data, as it will only receive data after it has sent a request.

I have a .NET 2.0 *.dll that calls My.Computer.Network.Ping(). The *.dll is then run out of an *.exe via AppDomain.CreateDomain() and Invoke(). The problem is that this works just fine under Windows XP but under Windows 7, I get an exception saying that no network connection is available. I tried the Ping() call out of a small console application under Windows 7 and it works just fine.

Im using the code from [URL] as a starter, most of the code is the same. the chat system works fine but on the client a added a disconnect button "clientSocket.Close()" and as soon as i click that i get errors, on the client, this is the code...
Private Sub getMessage()
For infiniteCounter = 1 To 2
[CODE]...
And this line...
serverStream.Read(inStream, 0, buffSize)
gives me "Unable to read data from the transport connection: A blocking operation was interrupted by a call to WSACancelBlockingCall."
Now im talking the server, after the client clicks disconnect or closes by task manager, looses connection, etc the server crashes and gives me.

find a current and simple way to do this. I'm using VWD Express 2008 and SQL Express 2008.I'm able to get the client's path to the image file using an asp:FileUpload control on the web form. How do I upload the client's image file and display it in the web form's image control? How do I save it to the sqlserver? The image table is already set up with a "Image" data type column. Can the image be saved to the database as simply as other data types?

this is probably easier than I think it is.I would like a client-to-client messenging system without using Winsock if possible. At the moment an IP based connection system would be okay.

how to create a client/server... But I couldn't... I don't want anything fancy. Just want the client to send the server 4 numbers, depending on the user's choice; after that, the server would turn off the pc, restart it, etc. It all depends on the number received. Is there a rather "simple" way to do it? If it's not to much trouble you could use Atheist's example. (Btw I don't understand the code and, yes, I've checked on [URL])

We are creating a Who wants to be a millionaire style game in VB. Our server is pulling information such as questions and answers from a Access Database and sending them to the contestants (Clients). All transfer of information is directly from the server to each client. One of the "Life Lines" we want to use is "Ask a friend", where one client is able to Instant message another client for a short time to get help on the question.

i have been working on a chat program Server side and client side i have most of the features i was asked to put in but then once i got most of the bugs out i noticed something the server admin could send whispers and alerts to single users but then when you try do do it on the client side it wont work so i looked through it all and found my issue the user list on the client is only a list of the names in server hash table so i was wondering how do i send the hashtable and all of its data E.G. user connection information to the client so that it can send commands to individual users like the server side can
vb
Public clients As New Hashtable()
' This subroutine checks to see if username already exists in the clients
' Hashtable. If it does, send a REFUSE message, otherwise confirm with a JOIN.
[code]....
i tried to send the hashtable over the same method used to send the user names to the client but it cannot convert the hashtable to a string so that wont work so my question is How do i send the hash table to the user from the server then display the username on the client ??

I have been reading through Atheists posts in regards to client-server and TCP client/server connection's. But how do i go about writing a program with 1 client and server where the client side creates a text file.Once the server sees there is a text file it connects and downloads it to itself or the client pushes the text file to the server.Once on the server i will read the text file and put its info into a sql db.

I have an application that takes a series of reports and sends them as attachments in an email to a specified group of email accounts.
When I run the Java version of this using apache commons and the same setting, the email is sent. However, when I run the VB.NET version of the code, it fails on my local machine and on the client machine.
I have a VB.NET web application running on a server that uses similar code. I tried that code locally and it fails. Yet, the web application is working perfectly.
Why is it that the Java application can send the email, but the .NET application cannot?[code]....

One day i decided to make Checkers (the game). Black and white circles are moving cross the field made of buttons. And i had to program each button (32 buttons) several times for each condition (moving black, moving white, black eating white, white eating black, black won, white won, whose turn it is...) Count that and multiply it by 32. It is really big code for something that simple.
if i can use one function for making all that conditions.
Let's use more simple example: tic tac toe game[code...]

I am making a FlowLayoutControl panel which the user can edit by dragging controls onto it in any required order. The controls are mainly (subclassed) Buttons and (subclassed) TextBoxes, plus perhaps a few labels. There might easily be several hundred of them interspersed at random. I need to be able to save the FlowLayoutPanel and/or its list of controls to a file, and then restore the whole thing again later when needed. If I am not mistaken, this will involve serialization -- a subject about which I presently know next to nothing. I have tried trawling the web for introductions and relevant examples, but I am suffering from information overload. There is so much written about serialization that I don't know where to start. As I can't spend too much time on this, I'm hoping there is some simple way through all the complications. Can anyone here explain, or point me to, the basics needed for saving a control like my one?
