VS 2008 Memory Allocation For Program?

Jun 4, 2009

I noticed my program starts out at between 20-25 MB of RAM usage upon launch. It levels out at around 28MB once the two forms that are used are open.Sometimes it will hit 31MB. But that's usually max.It simply consists of an initial form on loadup for the Notification area Icon and then two forms that are loaded when you right or left click on the icon. One they are loaded they are either hidden or shown when you click on the icon.All-in-all, the program isn't doing much; no large calculations, no huge amounts of data being manipulated, etc.

VS 2008 Read Process Memory From An Open Program?

Dec 27, 2009

I want to be able to read and write the process memory of Firefox for a game on facebook(It's kind of like cheating only you can't cheat, nothing stays permanent.) this is just for fun. The game is called happy fish aquarium and you raise fish in the game and it's just really addicting. I found a program that reads process memory and lets me change certain values in happy fish aquarium so I can make my fish tank look different or whatever. But if I reload the page it will of course go back to the original state because the fish tank's memory is held online. The point is, I just want to make a program that can read the process memory from Firefox from a certain range and bytes. like 4 bytes and a range of 00400000 to 7FFFFFFF. Does anyone know how I can achieve this? Please note, this is not for cheating purposes in any way whatsoever, it's simply for visual fun(visual meaning only I can see it). What I want to do is the same as using the add-on firebug in firefox to change the html on a webpage.

VS 2008 Memory Continue To Rise By Each Action Made To The Program?

Jul 2, 2009

I was observing my programs process in the task manager and noticed each action made to the program made the memory continue to rise. So I added a Garbage Collector and since it's my first time using it im not sure if I implemented it right. I haven't gotten any errors but I ran some tests I would like to go over with everyone. After adding the GC I was able to notice a change in the memory my program used- it was reduced.I added the GC to the main forms formClosed event of my application which is used in different scenarios. I also added it to the panels paint events before I tested the program. And noticed a quicker reduction in memory. The Form i mainly use called frmLine1t5. This form calls to the database based on which line to test. Then the form sets the controls that were added in design view to be enabled or disabled based upon the product for that line. This process was easy to implement.I Load each new frmLine1t5 to a collection of the form so people can run multiple tests using the same form. This helped so i didn't have multiple forms for the same type of process. I had to access the forms through a collection so I knew which controls to populate to the correct instance.

I noticed during my testing that I can not add more than 50 items to this collection. The problem is that I remove the key from the collection upon form closing, so I dont know why it has gotten to 50.The test I made Runs two timers. Timer 1 is set to tick every 4.5 seconds This timer loads a new form and tests a new line of product.Timer 2 ticks every 5 seconds and closes the previously opened form.I have it get the GC Total Memory upon loading the form of frmLine1t5 and upon closing the form of frmLine1t5.the results are shown in the picturesThe errors i have gotten occured when ChildForms Open: had reached 50Here are the errors:

[code]...

Possible Causes:I think that upon Form Closing it is taking longer to finish closing before a new form is loaded... But isn't vb.net suppose to finish any unfinished threads? Even if the program is single threaded? And because the form closing isn't "happening" then the key is not removed from the collection.

Load Everything In Memory Upon Application Start?

Oct 9, 2009

I'm using VB.Net, and I have a set of data which I have to able to filter through fairly quickly.Basically, the program is like google sugest, but instead of a drop-down menu, I'm using a listbox. When a user enters a word, I compare the word using LINQ and filter those that contain the user's input. The data are all strings of variable length (from 0 to 200 characters, most on 150 character mark), and I have 240,000+ of this strings and counting- all stored in an XML file.

A colleague of mine told me that loading all of that to memory (using VB.Net's XML serializer plus collections of string/objects) is not practical, and would slow the 'startup' time of the program. I haven't finished building the program yet and I'm having second thoughts about continuing this path.

So, my question is: Should I continue with my current approach on the problem (which is load everything to memory on startup), or is there a better way of solving my dilemma?

VS 2008 Program On Start Checker?

Jan 27, 2010

I should I do so that when a program is run, it automatically checks for conditions. If true, it will continue opening the form but if false, it opens another. What I've done is it goes directly to one form and if false it will close the form using me.hide() and loads a form using Form1.show(). Problem is, if the condition is false, both forms will open. What is the right way to do this?

VS 2008 Start Program From File?

Aug 18, 2009

I have created a program that saves and opens a custom filetype that I have created. In windows I have associated this program with that particular extension. What kind of handler do I need to tell the program what to do when it is started by double-clicking a file that it is associated with? As of right now, the program starts, but of course it doesn't know what to do with the file that started it, so it does nothing. I searched with no luck, sort of hard to choose keywords.

2008 Express Edition: Attempted To Read Or Write Protected Memory, This Is Often An Indication That Other Memory Is Corrupt?

May 27, 2009

I cannot use Visual Basic 2008 at all. When I go to "new project" and choose "Windows Form Application" I get this error.I have tried multiple uninstall/reinstall with no result.A microsoft reply to this suggested that I needed: " .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 " I checked, and I did not have the .netframework 2.0 service Pack 1.
When I tried to download and install the above from Microsoft.com, the istaller said that "it was not allowsed" and I was not able to install the service pack 1.

I tried Uninstalling net framework 3.5, 3.0, 2.0 and then reinstalling .netframework 2.0 sevice pack 1; then reinstalling Visual basic 2008 express edition. At the reinstall of Visual basic 2008, .netframework 2.0 sevice pack 1 is unistalled by .net framework service pack 2.When I check the foruims for simiar problems, the formus are mostly for Visual basic 5.0, or other programs that I do not have.

Here is the programs I have installed:

Operating system: Windows XP
Microsoft .net framework 1.1
Microsoft .NET framwork 1.1 Hotfix(KB928366)
Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2

[code]....

All the security updates and hotfixes for Widows XP.

C# - Thread Start In Form1() Crashing Program On Windows Server 2008

May 12, 2011

I'm getting a really strange error. I have a program that needs to run a thread on startup, and for some reason when I do myThread.Start() in Form1() it will crash with "program is not working" (But only on Windows Server, not on my local machine!). However, if I put the same code under button1_Start() it works no problem. What gives?

EDIT A little extra information: In my thread I have a line of code that uses invoke

Invoke(new Action(() => richTextBox1.AppendText(string.Format("Updating {0}..
", DateTime.Now))));

And for some reason the crashing goes away after I make the thread sleep for 2 seconds before it starts executing. Am I using the right method to execute code on the app startup?

VS 2008 - Dreaded Clr20r3 System.InvalidOperationException On Program Start ONLY On Windows XP

Mar 11, 2011

I'm typing this up only to document it and possibly save others the three days of frustration and hell I had to go through. Because this unhanded exception was damned near untrappable (it happens on Form.Show(), but since my primary form was affected, I couldn't tell at the time), it's one I know I lost a lot of hair nailing down.

I have an office application. Standard fare utility program that grew to do lots of custom tricks for my place of business. Lots of database providers to pull data from various unconnected sources and crystal reports to make fancy reports from it all.

When I make a change or addition to it, it usually is only needed by one employee, so I only deploy the new version to one computer at a time. Recently, I had to reinstall the program to the whole company. Everything was going fine, until somebody who had a Windows XP machine tried to run it. It was giving a "clr20r3" "System.InvalidOperationException" on program boot. None of my Try-Catch blocks were catching it. Any Windows XP machine I installed it on was failing, and any Vista/Win7 machine had no issues at all.

I spent the next three days trying to catch what was causing it, pulling out references, reinstalling .NET. Searching for references to this error online was futile since System.InvalidOperationException is one of those ultra-generic errors that pop up for hundreds of oddball reasons.

Finally, by happenstance, I found the cause via a single, obscure post on TechArena by a poster with only that post to his name who decided to chime in with his two cents on someone else's System.InvalidOperationException problem.

About a month ago, I replaced the program icon with a new one. I made up a nice Icon, and compiled pre-sized versions of it into a proper .ICO file from 16x16 all the way up to 256x256. I replaced the program icon with it, the links to the shortcuts in the setup program, and the icon on the main form.

THAT was the bug. Because my .ICO file had sizes larger than 64x64, Windows XP couldn't handle it as a form icon! It works fine for the program icon and for the shortcuts, but the form icons MUST be 64x64 or smaller or the program will throw System.InvalidOperationException on Form.Show(). I didn't know this was the issue since this change was over a month old and I hadn't needed to upgrade a Windows XP machine in that time. Windows Vista and 7 can handle large icon files just fine!

Solution, I made a second, WinXP compliant icon just for the main form. Problem solved. My big icon is still used for my program and shortcuts, so they look great scaling to max size in Windows Vista/7 and XP no longer crashes with a cryptic error message.

Alright!

But the problem is when my program has to delete a certain file in C:/ at startup, it just can't because it's not ran as administrator!

Program Using To Much Memory?

Jan 20, 2009

the program ive created will need to run for 3-7 days with out be restarted.im worried about memory leaks and anything else that might occur. to view what my program is using ive opened windows task manager.these are the reading i get:

CPU: between 0 and 2
working set(memory) about 29,596 - 29,600k
memory(private working set) about 8756 k[code]....

2 question, first does this look ok (is my program using to much memory, etc) and secondly why does the thread say 12-14?i thought the program is one thread plus i have a second thread running in the background so shouldnt that be just 2 then?(the program is an sms sender.it sends and recieves sms's, databases them, and sends out responses based on what the txt msg is).
