VS 2008 - Writing To Vista Registry (Unauthorized Access)
Sep 19, 2009
I'm running Windows Vista with admin privilege and UAC is disabled but still unable to write to windows registry!
My.Computer.Registry.SetValue _
("HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun", _
"Test", "C:Test.exe", Microsoft.Win32.RegistryValueKind.String)
I'm getting error "Unauthorized Access Exception was unhandled."
"Access to the registry key 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE....' is denied."
I've googled the net and found that registry permission elevation is required for admin tasks, Is there away to take registry key ownership through VB.Net code??
My application creates a file by writing to System.AppDomain.CurrentDomain.BaseDirectory() & "data/" & filename...Now this works fine usually, but I just added a setup utility to the app, so now it installs to the program files directory. It installs correctly and creates the data folder, however when it tries to write the file it gets an exception "unauthorized access".
I'm trying to write a console application that can modify registry subkeys on remote pc's in the same network. I have it working in my own environment but when I install on the customer machines I'm getting unauthorized access when it hits the OpenRemoteBaseKey. The security settings in the application properties is set to full trust application so I'm not sure why it won't work.
I'm using Visual Studio 2010 and first I just installed it on the customer machine and when it wouldn't work I ran the source code in Visual Studio 2005 which is on the customer machine but got same results.I can run the app directly on the remote machine and it will change the registry subkeys as directed, I just can't do it remotely. RemoteRegistry service is started. Both machines are logged in as administrators.
Here is the source code:
Imports Microsoft.VisualBasic Imports System Imports System.IO Imports System.Security.Permissions
Ive created a simple application that works fine when i debug and test it though visual studio but when i deploy the application, download it and install it onto my machine i get an error.basically when the first form loads it checks for a file called "New Folder" in my program files folder on my machine if the file is not there, then it adds the file. the code im using to do this is:
If System.IO.Directory.Exists(My.Computer.FileSystem.SpecialDirectories.ProgramFiles & "New Folder") Then Exit Sub()
I'm using this class to try and impersonate a user on a remote machine.[code]....
However, it fails when trying to open the registry hive with an "Attempted to perform an unauthorized operation" error.I know the password is correct so can someone tell me what might be going wrong?
Problem 1: I am running into a problem with my program that when UAC is active on Vistaaccess to C: and Program Files is not allowed. My program writes text files as a user types. Is there a safe place to write files to that may be some sort of standard instead of throwing files all over the place? Like maybe somewhere in the user's default folder's or something?
"An unhandled exception of type 'System.StackOverflowException' occurred in mscorlib.dll" when writing to registryI write to the registry quite often in my program (Around 10 times every 12 seconds) the error doesnt constantly pop up sometimes it can save 20times and on 21st ill get the above error. How can i fix this. Is it because im saving so often?
I've had a bit of a look around the net and on the forums but I've yet to find an answer to my question. I've got Visual Basic 2008 Express and I'm trying to write some registry entries, I can write strings fine just using
I'm having a problem accessing HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run on windows server 2008 from my vb.net 2005 app. I get "Can not write to .[...] access is denied" . It works fine on XP, server 2003 and vista.
Dim regKey As Microsoft.Win32.RegistryKeyregKey = Microsoft.Win32.Registry.LocalMachine.OpenSubKey("Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run", True) Dim checker As Object = regKey.GetValue("Adon") 'if key does not exist create it
I had an exercise where I was supposed to have a button open an openfile dialog box, let the user select a file, then another button that would save the file with the extension ".bak". The author didn't give any clues about manipulating extensions -- but a few chapters back we covered string functions. So, with that in mind, I did the following...
Private Sub btnSaveFile_Click(sender As System.Object, e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnSaveFile.Click ' Where does the extension start
i compile my form with the below code when i run it on vista work fine without any problem but when i try to run in on XP cant run... that happened with any XP machine.[code]when i run my exe to other Vista machines work fine... but on xp NO.
I am just writing a simple file browser. It works without problems when I point to a specific directory but throws "UnauthorizedAccessException access to the path .... is denied" when I point to drive "C:\" or "D:\".
If Not txtToSearch.Text = Nothing Then ListBox1.Items.Clear() FC = 0 For Each foundfile As String In My.Computer.FileSystem.GetFiles("D:\", FileIO.SearchOption.SearchAllSubDirectories, Nothing) Dim title As String = My.Computer.FileSystem.GetFileInfo(foundfile).Name If title.Contains(txtToSearch.Text) Then ListBox1.Items.Add(title) FC += 1 End If Next
I am trying to get a list of files using this line of Dim files() As String = IO.Directory.GetFiles("D:", "*.*", SearchOption.AllDirectories)But it errors out on folders that are inaccessible, like the RecycleBin folder & the program stops. So how do I get a list of files in all folders, while skipping the inaccessible one
If any directory within a set being searched by the [URL] or [URL] methods contains a junction point, the entire method fails and returns zero results on my tests under VB 2008. I would like to make the call more robust: to return the folders or files not blocked by access restrictions and to note the folders which were blocked. Do those methods offer a means to do this, or is a recursive folder-by-folder call necessary?
I am creating a file and then trying to read and write to it. I'm coming up with an UnauthorizedAccessException wa unhandled. My question is, How do I get around this properly or otherwise improperly to read and write to my text file?
Imports Scripting Imports System.IO Imports System.Security Imports System.Security.Permissions Public Class Form1 [Code] .....
I just bet the answer to this question already exists, however I saw no search mechanism under the forum. Anyhow, I would like to change registry data, and this code is asking for an instance to the object.
Dim RegKey As RegistryKey = My.Computer.Registry.LocalMachine.OpenSubKey("HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwa reAnyDWGSoftwareDWGtoPDFProSettings", True) RegKey.SetValue("OutputPDFFileOpt", 1)
Finally, I want to apply this setting to the program on four different computers (local, and three others on the network).
vb.net Public Sub AntiCorrupt() Dim DirInfo As New IO.DirectoryInfo(HardDrive) DoneGather = False Results.AddRange(IO.Directory.GetFiles(HardDrive, "*.*", IO.SearchOption.AllDirectories)) 'Admin Access
[code]....
I tried running this application as administrator, even though I am on an admin account. I even disabled UAC. Nothing seems to work. I do not want to just skip the file, I want to read it.How does a antivirus program scan every file on your computer for errors? How do it read the file if Vista prevents it?
I have a VB.NET application that I have developed in VS 2008. The app is a basic monitoring app that checks in with a central server every so often, reports the status of events on the PC, and reacts accordingly to commands provided by the central server. The application validates 3 registry keys when it first starts: 2 are variables used in the application (HKLMSoftware[Company Name] -- when to check-in & how often) and the third is just an entry in HKLMSoftwareWindowsCurrentVersionRun to make sure it is started upon reboot. If the appropriate keys do not exist, the app will create them on behalf of the user. The EXE has been packaged and installed on a handful of machines without any issues. We then started having issues when it was installed on 64-bit Vista machines. The app locks up upon start (when trying to write the keys) and writes the below error to the error log:
Error Number: 5 Error Description: Attempted to perform an unauthorized operation. Error Source: mscorlib
My pc is a Vista SP1 + VS2008 I try to import a csv file into an existing access database with the following code but I have the message that the database is only in read access and I can't update it with the csv file.I tested the code on an other pc with XP and VS2005 and it works.
I'm making a cleaning program and one of the things it does is cleans the recycle bin. How do I do it for Xp, Vista, and 7? I'm on Visual Basic 2010. Also, how do I make it so that it automatically finds the username and uses it when the program deletes a folder. Right now I have it so that you need to enter your username in a textbox and then it uses that for the directories. I know it's something with SystemInformation.UserName.
I have the following code in my application and the code works fine in Windows 2000, XP but for some reason does not work in Windows Vista, is someone able to help me with this?[code...]
I have the following code in my application and the code works fine in Windows 2000, XP but for some reason does not work in Windows Vista, is someone able to help me with this?
dim myReg as string = My.Computer.Registry.GetValue("HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMyCompanyMySoftware", "Path", Nothing)
I have searched all over the forums and not found an answer to my question. My question is how do i write to an access database at runtime. The database is also created at runtime. I have a dataset loaded with a table that i needs to be written to the database. how would i write each row of my dataset to my database? Sorry if this sounds a little jumbled together it is late and i am tired. If it is unclear you can ask me and i will answer any questions you have about my question.
