View 1 RepliesRemote registry access using WMI VB.Net..I just need simple example of how to access a remote registry (2000, XP) using the "System Registry Provider" (WMI) in VB.NET.
View 6 RepliesI'm running Windows Vista with admin privilege and UAC is disabled but still unable to write to windows registry!
My.Computer.Registry.SetValue _
("HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun", _
"Test", "C:Test.exe", Microsoft.Win32.RegistryValueKind.String)
I'm getting error "Unauthorized Access Exception was unhandled."
"Access to the registry key 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE....' is denied."
I've googled the net and found that registry permission elevation is required for admin tasks, Is there away to take registry key ownership through VB.Net code??
I'm trying to return from a webpage, the remote HKCUVolatileCLIENTNAMEHere's what I'm doing so far:
Get the Machine Name via DNS - this bit works great:

I'm trying to write a console application that can modify registry subkeys on remote pc's in the same network. I have it working in my own environment but when I install on the customer machines I'm getting unauthorized access when it hits the OpenRemoteBaseKey. The security settings in the application properties is set to full trust application so I'm not sure why it won't work.
I'm using Visual Studio 2010 and first I just installed it on the customer machine and when it wouldn't work I ran the source code in Visual Studio 2005 which is on the customer machine but got same results.I can run the app directly on the remote machine and it will change the registry subkeys as directed, I just can't do it remotely. RemoteRegistry service is started. Both machines are logged in as administrators.
Here is the source code:
Imports Microsoft.VisualBasic
Imports System
Imports System.IO
Imports System.Security.Permissions

I need connect remote registry in xp to vista system in vb.net code.

screwed up User Access Control, some functionality does not inherit the accounts true privileges. I built a Command Prompt application and ran it from an Admin account, but I kept getting access denied when I ran it. The only work around I can find for now to shut the dam thing off in control panel.
View 2 RepliesI am writting an application that stores data in an Access database. I can't put the files in the Program Files directory since standard users can't write to that folder. I can't use a 'user' folder since multiple users will need to access the same file. In addition to accessing the file, users on occassion will copy new versions of the file into the folder, overwritting the old file.Where should I put this file? I am thinking the ProgramData folder, but when I create that folder during the install, it is also read-only for a standard user.I'm lost as to where I should put a file that can be accessed by multiple users, that is read/write, and I can install the folder into the location. I don't think I have a programmatic way of installing a file into the Public users folder.
View 1 RepliesI tried to access xp to vista system manually, its working,but programatically how to do itike,by selecting view workgroup computers in network tasks and click one computer in workgroup computers.it shows connect to "system name" window, contains username and passwordif i enter username and password.the seleted computer will able to access in registry otherwise i can't able to access that selected system.
View 1 RepliesI posted this as a bug on MS Connect and am wondering if anybody else can verify the problem: I been beating my head against the wall for about 3 days and I don't think it is my problem.
Desktop computer - Vista 64 bit
Portable Computer - Vista 32 bit
vb.net 2010 express on both of them
I can not establish a connection to an Access db (either .mdb OR .accdb) on the 64 bit computer. When I try I keep getting a message that says "Format at the initialization string does not conform to specification starting at index 0." (this was typed not copied). (There are screen shots over on Connect).
I can establish a connection to a "Microsoft SQL Server Compact Edition" (.sdf) database on the 64 bit computer.I can estabish a connection to all 3 types on the 32 bit computer (.sdf, .mdb, .accdb).The 'funny' thing is that if I establish the connection on the 32 bit and copy the program directory over to the 64 bit, the prorgam loads and seems to run fine. But the %$# _(%* Wizard will not run on the 64 bit machine. Runs fine on the 32 bit but not on the 64 bit. Of course I make sure that the db's are in the location where the program expects them to be when I run the program on the 64 bit machine.
One final thing, when I am in the progam created on the 32 bit and running on the 64 bit and I try Data->Add New Data Source->Database->Dataset only two of the three connections show up while all 3 show up on the 32 bit machine. Also the connection string is incorrect for the non-sdf connection. It should include
I want to install my app or (just access db)to AppData folder to enable write for it. so, how can I do that in setup project. Is there just parameter or should I wirte custom action.

View 1 RepliesWithin the application, I need to have two levels of access: Standard User and Power User,for example.These two levels can have the same access level within Windows.It is not my intention to elevate to administratoWhat is needed, is a way to have two different groups of users.ne group will be able to run the application while a second group has access to additional features within the application but not within the windows environment
It is my hope that there will be two user account types: 1) Standard User and 2) some other user type such as Power User or something else that will distinguish it from Standard User
vb.net
Public Sub AntiCorrupt()
Dim DirInfo As New IO.DirectoryInfo(HardDrive)
DoneGather = False
Results.AddRange(IO.Directory.GetFiles(HardDrive, "*.*", IO.SearchOption.AllDirectories)) 'Admin Access
[code]....
I tried running this application as administrator, even though I am on an admin account. I even disabled UAC. Nothing seems to work. I do not want to just skip the file, I want to read it.How does a antivirus program scan every file on your computer for errors? How do it read the file if Vista prevents it?
I want my program to be able to edit a values within a registry key that resides in 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE'
My.Computer.Registry.SetValue("HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREXYZ", "MyValue", "MyData")
The above works fine in Windows XP, but throws an UnauthorizedAccessException in Vista.
We have developed an application using Visual Basic .NET as the front end and Microsoft Access as the back end. If we run the application on Windows XP we can write records to the database but when we run it on Vista it does not write records to the database.
View 2 RepliesI've found a few examples of using vb.net to access an sql database, so far none of them have worked . They all involve using DataReaders. Maybe its the fact that the sql db is not on the same machine as the application.I was just wondering if anyone had a more comprehensive example of using VB.NET to access a remote sql server.
EDIT:I've received a few helpful comments an replies already. So far my connection string looks like:
"server=sqlblah.myhost.com;uid=myuser;pwd=pass;database=testdb"
Probably also good to mention their is no editing of the tables a this point, just reading.
I was wondering can I make a program that I can send to other computer so i can access their screen. is this something that can be done in visual basic? i ask how to do this because Verizon did this to me the other day i saw him moving the mouse around and checking the connection but of course i had to accept this and it showed me a thing saying he was off when he was done.
View 1 RepliesMy client keep on insisting that they want there database to be ms access and not sql server. But they also what to be remotely accessible in there network.
Is it possible to use ms access as a remote database? would the database locked up once a connection is made?

View 2 RepliesI have a web site that connects to a remote SQLServer, and is running just fine.I have some pretty simple 'batch' type tasks that I want to run (as a Windows application) on a scheduler (I'm more comfortable with VB so I prefer that).
Looks like VB Express won't allow me to access the remote data. Everything seems to be pointing to having to buy VS Professional for $545 (I don't have an original one to upgrade). Is there a more economical VB option?
I am looking to access a folder on my web server to retreive a picture and to replace a picture in that folder. I am using VB.Net 2005.

I have a VB6 application which has been running succesfully for years under XP, however under Vista data loss has been observed.It appears that if the app is run 'as administrator' then it connects to the correct database file, however if the app. is not run as administrator then vista creates a copy of the database (no idea where) - hence I end up with 2 versions of the database.
In fact I can delete the database file entirely and the app. still works fine because vista is using it's own copy - the problem is how do I back up this 'vista copy' when I can't find it (search doesn't find it).
My pc is a Vista SP1 + VS2008 I try to import a csv file into an existing access database with the following code but I have the message that the database is only in read access and I can't update it with the csv file.I tested the code on an other pc with XP and VS2005 and it works.
