VS 2008 - Convert Existing DB Connection Strings From ADODB To ADO.NET?

Jul 14, 2009

I have upgraded my VB app from VB to VB.NET and its working fine. Now, I want to convert my existing DB connection strings from ADODB to ADO.NET so that I dont have to use MS Access on every client which runs this app. Currently the VB app looks up into an Access db to get the server ip, username, password etc. I aim to hardcode these values so that I wouldn't need the Access db anymore. Any inputs on how this could be done?

I am getting errors when I try to use this adodb.connection and command in my code. The error I am getting is saying that the connection and command are not defined. I read online that depending on your version of vb that you might use the "OLE" connection instead of ADODB.

Not All Results Returned From ADODB Connection?

Jun 1, 2010

We have had a visual basic.net (2002) service running on our server for several years now with no problems. However I recently needed to update one of the DB calls by adding additional fields to the SELECT statement. However, after adding the new fields, some of the returned data is coming back empty when I loop through the records. I have confirmed that the querystring is accurate and returns all of the data through a third party viewer, so I'm not sure what is going on.For example, in the code below, everything worked fine with field1, field2, and field3. However, when I add field4, data for field2 and field4 come back empty when looping through the results.

Using In Asp.net An Unmanaged Dll From .asp That Requires An Open ADODB Connection?

Dec 17, 2009

I want to access the methods of a dll that is not managed. Seems to be vb6 from my best guess and what I know about the program.That part I have managed to figure out. If I drag the x.dll to my bin folder, the interpreter wrapper is created, etc. I can access the methods in the dll just fine. The problem is the database connection.

For informational purposes: The dll is compiled for a vbscript .asp website. There are a few methods in the dll that just manipulate the input (which I can access error free- its how I tested the dll usage), but most make a db call to get or set or update, etc. data in the db. The dll expects an ADODB connection. The asp files are setup such as:

set DllObj = server.CreateObject("dll.class")
set connect = server.createobject("ADODB.Connection")
connect.open "SystemDSNName","user","password"

[code].....

It is using a DSN but just as easily could be a DSN-Less connection. My problem is that the dll expects the connection to be open and available to it. Can I make a ADODB database connection available and open for this dll in a vb.net asp.net website.Basically,I need to use the business logic and db data changes through this dll, but want to make the front end in asp.net.I know there is an ADODB namespace in .net somwhere and I tried using it but it was not doing the job and really, I did not quite understand how to.

Execute SQL Statements To A MySQL Database Through ADODB.Connection

Sep 2, 2009

We have a VB6 program that uses an ADODB.Connection to establish a database connection and use its execute function to run SQL statements. The connection we have established is to a SQL Server. It has been working fine. Currently, I am trying to change the connection to a MySQL database. I changed the connection string and the connection is ok.

However, when it comes to running the execute function, it returns a runtime error 3246 - connection object cannot be explicitly closed while in a transaction.

I checked the connection.status before calling execute and found that it is open. When I use MySQL's server connections to check the status, I found that there was a connection before and after execute was called.

I encountered this same error whether I used MySQL ODBC 5.1 Driver or MySQL ODBC 3.51 Driver.

DataGridView - Convert Nulls To Empty Strings And Display It In The Grid As Empty Strings

May 14, 2009

I have a DataGridView that has some columns with dates. It binds to an in-memory Datatable which gets loaded from an string array of data passed back from the backend Some of the rows returned have nulls for the date columns. Solution 1: If I define the Date column in the DataTable as "string" I can easily convert those nulls to empty strings and display it in the grid as empty strings (desired results). However, if the user clicks on the date column header to sort by date, it doesn't order the rows as you want. You get a purely string sort order. Not acceptable

An Existing Connection Was Forcibly Closed By The Remote Host?

I have a fat VB.NET Winform client that is using the an old asmx style web service. Very often, when I perform query that takes a while or pass a large amt of data to a web service in a dataset, I get the subject error.The error seems to occur in < 1 min, which is far less than the web service timeout value that I have set or the timeout value on the ADO Command object that is performing the query within the web server.It seems to occur whenever I am performing a large query that expects to return a lot of rows or when I am sending up a large amount of data to the web service. For example, it just occurred when I was passing a large dataset to the web server:System.Net.WebException: The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a receive. ---> System.IO.IOException: Unable to read data from the transport connection: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host. ---> System.Net.Sockets.SocketException: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the rem

Sql - Updating Datatable To EXISTING Global Database Connection?

Jan 13, 2011

I am using Microsoft Visual Basic 2010 Express. I have a WPF-based project. I have a successful connection to a database in Database Explorer, and a working existing Data Source in Data Sources.

I created a datatable from the datasource using this code:

Dim roster_table As New DataTable("AGENT_ROSTER")

I can manipulate this datatable just fine, but I cannot figure out how to save its data to my database (agentroster.sdf) since the connection is on a global level, and isn't declared in this particular window.

How do I update this database from the datatable on this window?By the way, I tried creating a connection on this window's code, using the exact same connection string as the successful globally-connected database, yet it said that it couldn't connect.

Connection Strings To SQLExpress R2?

I have several programs I have written for my music studio/production company. Many dealing with inventory, customer DB etc. All of my programs are in VB6 and I have started to convert them all to VB.NET. I am getting proficient with VB.NET and connecting to DB using the very simple and generic connection strings, Example:

dbProvider = "PROVIDER=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;"
dbSource = "Data Source = C:/develop/Customer Tracking/resource.mdb"
con.ConnectionString = dbProvider & dbSource

As you can see I am using a basic MSAccess DB and I want to get away from this and start using SQLExpress,

Error: 0 - An Existing Connection Was Forcibly Closed By The Remote Host

May 19, 2012

Below error is thrown in a already opened program which connects to different database

A transport-level error has occurred when sending the request to the server.
(provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.)

Program details: code done using vb.net with MSSQL 2008 as back-end

Two instance of same exe where running simultaneously in same PC but error was thrown only by one instance Program uses both sqlconnection(ADO.NET) and ADODB connection(upgraded from VB6) and the error is thrown by both types of connection. If the error is due to network problem with the server then why few programs work fine? I am not able to trace the reason for this behavior of the program. Can I know why this error occurs and why only in few programs of same instance.

ADO - Best Practices When Using Tableadapters, Sql Connection Strings

May 2, 2010

I have read and worked through all of the examples in the book "ADO.NET 2.O", but there is so much there with so many ways to handle data, I am having difficulty translating the examples into my own real life application. I am confused about creating runtime connection strings, connection strings in my app.config file, connection strings in the properties for a sql connection control, etc.

I have a midichildform with a datagridview control, and I use a table adapter to edit and update the SQL Server 2005 Express edition database. There is no problem there. However, I also have a button control that I want to use to "process" the data that has been updated with the table adapter. I want to open the updated table, read each record on at a time, manipulate the data and add a records to another table. Do I have to create a connection string and an oleDBconnection? Or can I somehow use the connection string that is in my app.config file? [Code]

DB/Reporting :: Access Connection Strings?

Sep 12, 2011

I have been struggling with the construction of an Access connection string. Here's the problem.My Visual Basic 2008 project is located in a disk partition on my hard drive that I have named S:. My Access MDB file is in the same location.When I deploy the application it obviously will not be in an S: drive on the user's machine. My concern is that if I construct the Connection String using the file designations on my computer as:

(Provider =Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0; Data Source =S:MyApplicationmydatabase.mdb; User Id =admin; Password =

The deployed application won't know where to look for the data file. I know there are some shortcuts that will allow me to construct the connection string, but I do not know either the designated names or where to find them.

Passing Connection Strings Between Assemblies?

Sep 2, 2010

I have two executables that access a DLL containing Data Access Layer objects Each exe can have a different config containing info on server and database name, connection string etc.How do I pass the config info to the DAL objects?

Obviously I can pass the config strings to the DAL objects every time I instanciate one, but that seems messy and repetitive as every class in the DAL will require Properties for the Config strings..if there is a way for the instanciated DAL objects to read some properties from the calling object without me having to pass them explicitly?
