I have Crystal Reports 2008 installed on my win7 laptop but when i go to insert references from my application settings the CrystalDecisions references are missing and im not able to find them. Note: they do exist in my "c:windowsassembly" folder.

When I check into Visual source safe and get latest version from another machine, VS.net 2008 throws errors.I have to add the references again in that new machine. Is there anyway where I can keep the references in spite of files checked in to VSS?I need to send copy all the files to production server and we don't have VS.net on the production box to add reference and build the application.

Ok, so do i now need to compile my vb class file into a .dll and reference it from the BIN folder? If so how do i compile the vb file? I'm running VS 2005 .net 2.0
So I created an application with vb.net, I added Messenger type Api in preferences, compiled my program and everything was fine. However I can't run the program from other directories. It says that the .dll is missing. I'm trying to include the .dll to the program somehow - no success, how that should be done? Friend tried to help me and said I should add "Application block" something to the references. I can't find that though.
View 6 RepliesI have this VB ASP.NET Web Service Application project running VS 2005. I'm trying to add references. To do so I click on the "Properties" icon in the Solution Explorer window which presents me with a window to add/update/remove references. I click "Add", I select the reference I want and then "OK". Lo en behold, NOTHING! It simply won't add references (I tried adding several different ones). Specifically I'm trying to add the System.Configuration assembly.

I've used VS 2005 for a while, when you use 'Add Reference' it puts the DLL in the BIN directory. I did this with VS 2008 and I don't see the DLL in the BIN. I am using an Application ( not a website ).
View 9 RepliesIn my VS2010 VB project I have a lot of external references to DLLs, to the point that organization has become a major headache and I'm wondering if I am going about it the wrong way. My assembly references include common redistributables (SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP1, ReportViewer 2010 SP1, DataVisualization, as well as some useful 3rd party dlls from CodeProject and CodePlex.
Currently, I am copying each DLL into a 1st level folder (/dll_lib) under my named project folder (under the solution folder), and adding the reference from that path. However, I see that Visual Studio copies the DLLs to various other locations (/bin/debug or /bin/release) in my project when I build the project or solution, and some of the 3rd party DLLs come with instructions to copy them manually to /bin.
What is the "best practice" for where to put the DLLs? Can I just put all of them under /bin and let the build event copy to /bin/debug or /bin/release as required? Should I try to force a single reference path for the dlls in the project output?
Are the following references required for VS 2008 users as well? Or only required for VB 2005 Express Edition users?

View 17 RepliesI am using CompilerParameters to dynamically compile code... The problem is when I use:
cp.ReferencedAssemblies.Add(CompilerPath & "est.exe")
to add a reference to test exe ... (where CompilerPath is the full path name)
Compiler Path is not the Compiler Application Path
I get an error when compiling stating that:

"Could not load file or assembly 'test, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified."
If I put it in the test.dll in the "compiler apps" path and then call ReferencedAssemblies.Add with the full path it works.
I am having problem with Visual Studio 2008.... When i add the Microsoft ActiveX Data Objects 2.5 Library from COM References, and just run the blank form, it runs perfectly.... But whenever i declare anything related to ADODB like dim con as new ADODB.Connection, then after that it gives me error and doesnt run the project. A first chance exception of type 'System.IO.FileNotFoundException' occurred in mscorlib.dll. After that if i comment that like (declaration), then error goes........ I tried uninstalling each and every component and VS as well but the error doesnt goes....i am using Windows 7 x64. The same is working in Windows XP x86 in my virtual machine..... as i am not able to start my project
View 2 RepliesI need to know how to have a button on a tab to create another button on a second tab that contains a panel, with appropriate spacing, the same size as other buttons already present, and the name of the tab that generated this new button as the text on the newly created button. I.e. button1 on tab1 will create and place a new button on a panel in tab2 that already has a grid of buttons (maybe 3x10 buttons) which will be placed underneath a particular column with the text tab2 on the new button which can also refer back to that tab automatically. Hopefully we can get all this code under a single button event.
I also don't know how to have a button on tab1 that focuses on tab2, which sets the back button on tab2 with a reference to go back to tab1 in order to remain dynamic. I.e. clicking on tab1's button will go to tab2 and set the back button there with a link back to the tab it was referred from.
I'd also like to know if there's an easy way to create and destroy tabs with a specific layout. I.e. We have home tab, and comment tab. (This is for the sake of argument) On the comment tab1 (which contains all posted comments), we have a new comment button which creates a comment tab2 (or a dialog box for that matter) with appropriate textboxes, labels, and buttons in the right places which could also make use of the issues I posted above. So the new comment button on the comment tab1 will create either a new comment tab2 with appropriate objects, or a dialog box with the same, and then the submit button on this comment tab2 or box will create a new textfield/buttons on the panel containing the grid of buttons with the information provided in the fields from comment tab2/dialog box which is then destroyed.
I hope i haven't made the examples too confusing, but I can't figure out how to even make progress in these directions. Trying either fails completely, or semi-fails in getting these examples to function 100%.

I am using VB 2008 & MS Access 2007 Databases for my Windows Forms Applications.The Problem is my Connection strings have been disappeared from DataSource Configuration Wizards & now i am unable to edit any Connection String in DataSet Designer.I had tried to create a Macro in MS Access Data File but didn't know how to create & so desided not to save any & just quit from Access and came back to Visual studio. Since then only this prob. has started. Earlier to this everything was just fine.I have tried to uninstall MS Office as well as Visual Studio then Re-installed Visual Studio but the problem is still there.

View 3 RepliesOver and over i keep getting stuck on the idea of adding references to a project. I was looking about visual studios 2010, i clicked the project menu tab, and then scrolled to add reference. When i would click on it, it would bring up a large list to choose from. So, my issue is as follows. I am told to reference via my compile error message a few items. I thought i found the elements i was looking for and pressed OK. When i would try to run, it would still give me the errors.
What am i doing wrong? Am i not doing something correct?

I have a function GetAllProducts() which fetches all products from a database and stores it in the cache for future requests. This works fine, but if I then call the function e.g. ProductSearchResults = GetAllProducts(), and then modify ProductSearchResults variable, this also modifies the cache, which is very important this never happens, as the cache affects the whole website.
I understand this is because both ProductSearchResults and the cache now have the same reference, but how do I solve the problem? Is there something that I can put in GetAllProducts() to ensure the cache always uses its own value?

View 3 RepliesI have a project that uses web references to make SOAP calls to several web services. When I'm working locally, the services are hosted on my local machine, so the URL of each web service is something like [URL]. When I deploy the project to a server, the URL needs to change to the production URL. Currently I am accomplishing this with a prebuild event that does a find-and-replace on each URL and overwrites it with the deployment URL before deploying. Surely there is a better way.

'System.ServiceModel.XmlSerializerFormatAttribute' is not accessible in this context because it is 'Friend' in the Reference.vb file.
I have not gotten it in other projects that I have done that point to the same web service. I have recently add some code that I downloaded and cleaned up the errors in to my project and this seems to be what broke it. This code uses several new features that I am not familiar with, mainly the "Friend" declaration and also uses name spaces in the code it self. Also I converted the code from C# using an utility that I downloaded, that untility was not 100% in it's conversion, hence the clean up that was needed.
I have a tier application based on this video url... So far the client application only has a reference to the Business Logic (not Data Access).If i needed to tie a control such as a TreeView to list certain data fields from my table then where and how should i do that? For example i could write a For each statement to iterate through the table which returns the item from a table or i could do it in the WCF service app but how does this tie in with a control such as TreeView especially when there are no references?

However in VS2008, when you go to Project>Add references, the tickboxes are not there. So how do you know whether or not a reference has already been added?

View 2 RepliesSo I have a picturebox on my windows form and it has an image set to it, I also have a bunch of reference files that reference to a bunch of images.Me.PictureBox1.Image = My.Resources.imgs.image1That piece of code works.Now, I tried to databind the picture box to a database so the images would load on the change of a combo box but that got confusing really fast so what I did was created a database and it holds all the image references such as "My.Resources.imgs.image1" but its stored as type varchar(50).Connecting to the database and retreiving the strings is no problem, that works all fine.The problem is converting the string to the image reference, it doesn't work. I've tried type casting, I tried using imagelocation rather than image but I want to reference to the resources that is attached to the project.

I'm still new to most of this but I seem to be finding that while you can load the Microsoft Reference Libraries at no charge, I'm told they are the slowest method to use.I have tested Gembox and only read about others. Is it worth the effort to deploy these 3rd party platforms, even if I'm working with small data sets, for the moment at least? Speed is one thing but when you're talking about 2 seconds vs 0.2 seconds, it's not worth $900 per seat.
Are there other 3rd party references which are Open Source, or no cost, etc...I would like to hear what the rest of us are doing on this?
