VS 2008 Passing Structures Between Modules?

Apr 25, 2010

i have a main module called "main", within the module i have declared 2 other modules "Interfacing" and "Espec", within these 2 submodules they both have a structure called "coord" which is identical. The problem is that when i have defined a function in one module with "coord" as type and try to assign a value in the other module with coord type i get error message "Value of type Main.Interfacing.Coord cannot be converted to Main.Espec.Coord", so basically how could i pass that structure?

Are Modules Still Commonly Used In Program Structures

Aug 18, 2010

I am not a program designer by any means but I would really like to start getting a better grasp of how to do it and a better understanding of the .NET languages in general (VB, C#). I was reading a book by Wrox - Professional Visual Basic 2008. In it I believed it mentioned that Modules are slowly going out of existence. I can see why most coding would go into a class object but I would assume modules would always be necessary to at least keep the code clean.

Also, I have been searching for a good source on software design but I can't seem to find any recent books published. I might be searching in the wrong places but I would really like to get my hands on one.

Passing Structures As Arguments For A Fortran DLL?

Sep 11, 2010

I could pass a User Defined Type data structure to a Fortran DLL, that contained Short Integers, Singles (real variables) and a series of Fixed Arrays, both short integers and real variables.I am upgrading my VB6 app to Visual Studio 2008 - VB, and I want to keep the same data structures as they are used in about 300,000 lines of code.I modified the Data Structure as follows below, making sure it is of Explicit Layout, since I want the position of all variables to be the same both in VS 2008 and Fortran.Two problems arise:

1) if the LayoutKind is Explicit, such as in the example below (only part of the data structue is shown, where "..." indicate part of omitted data structure members), whenever I try to run my app, I get the following exception message, which indicates that the VBFixedArray declared at Offset 154 is in conflict with some other object, unnamed by the exception handler.

Message="Could not load type 'MyApp.SomeStruct' from assembly 'MyApp, Version=1.32.3906.33480, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' because it contains an object field at offset 154 that is incorrectly aligned or overlapped by a non-object field."

Source="MyApp"
TypeName="MyApp.SomeStruct"
StackTrace:[code]....

2) if the LayoutKind is Sequential, the app will start, all the data preceding the VBFixedArrays is passed to the Fortran Dll without problem; everything that follows the VBFixedArray is garbled and unusable. To check this, I have made a Fortran subroutine in the Dll to which I pass both the Data Structure and a vector; in the Fortran subroutine, all the elements of the data structure are equivalenced to individual positions in the vector; upon return from the Fortran subroutine, I compare the elements of the data structure and those of the vector.

The problem here is that the Data Structure contains some 1300 names, and is used extensively in the application, as it is the way to pass elegantly a lot of data pertaining to a mathematical model with only one adress when accessing the Fortran Dll, in which the computing engine lies.

[VS2005] SafeArrayTypeMismatchException - Passing Two Structures Arrays And Other Single Values

Sep 29, 2008

I have written a ActiveX DLL in VB 6 which is like -

[Code]...

When I do this everything works fine and I am able to pass value to dll. I am passing two structures arrays and other single values like int and double etc. So far so good. But when I insert this code in another application (created in same vb.net 2005) where I actually intent it to use then i get the following error -

System.Runtime.InteropServices.SafeArrayTypeMismatchException
Specified array was not of the expected type.

I am puzzled as to why is this happening. I checked basic settings and they are same. In short the code works if i create a new project and go on but does not work and gives error if I insert in an existing application's code where i wanna use. To test I created a dll without passing structure arrays and then it worked in that application.

IDE :: Windows Forms Classes Appear As Class Modules Not Form Modules In Project Explorer

Jan 7, 2011

Yesterday I opened Visual Studio (2008 v 9.0.30729.1) and all the winform classes in my project display with class module icons with the little 'VB', instead of form module icons with the little form icon!

When I double click on a form module, the form designer doesn't open, just the code module.

When I run the project, it runs fine. There are no errors. The project builds fine.

I did Project --> show all files, and I can see the designer and resx files below the form module which doesn't look or act like a form module.

I can't open my forms to design them!

VS 2008 How Many Modules Can Have In One Program

Sep 8, 2009

I am doing a VB.NET course, there is a question in one of my assignments - "How many modules can you have in one program?" This seems like something that should be easy to find, but I have not been able to find it anywhere.Can anyone direct me to a resource that would have this? My initial thought is unlimited, although in practical terms, if you have an excess number of modules, then you probably need to re-think your workflows.

(2005) Arrays Of Structures Within Structures?

Jan 20, 2009

I have a structure called 'Scheme' and in my program I want (ideally) an ArrayList of 'Schemes' (so i can add, remove schemes etc.). However, within the 'Scheme' structure, I want to have an ArrayList of 'Item''Item' is another structure. Are there any solutions out there for iterating through these arrays quite easily?

How can I easily add multiple Items to a Scheme and mutliple Schemes to my Scheme array. Code is below. When I try to add Items to a Scheme, I get the 'Object not set to a reference of an object, try the 'New' keyword', but you cannot declare 'New' keywork within a structure.

VS 2008 Array Reference - Project With Several Forms And Modules

Dec 9, 2009

I have a project with several forms and modules. The problem which I am mentioning revolves around 3 items : 2 forms (e.g. form1 & form2) and a module. (Using VB.NET 2008, .net 3.5)

Now I have a structure declared in a module. I have a variable of that in form1 and form2.

'Module Code

Structure MScanner
Dim Indicator() As MuseIndStru
Dim FName As String

[CODE]..............

Now what is happening is, I am passing structure variable MScan (Form1) to Form2 (see function of form2 InitFilter) byvalue. Then in form2 I am changing value of a copy of the structure (see variable MS being changed in a private sub). But then when I close form2, form1's variable of MScan also get the value of variable MS (declared in form2).

I don't understand as this is not suppose to happen. I have reloaded my project as well but this problem is there. Why is my form1's variable value MScan being changed by form2.

VS 2008 - Looping Structures For Class

Dec 14, 2009

I have this Visual Basic class I'm taking online. At this point in the section all I'm supposed to know about are Do, Do While, Do Until, Exit Do, Continue Do, and For Next loops. So try not to go off in a fancy super-coder direction. And everything is (preferably) made through Console Applications on VBE 2008

Problem 1:
Write a program that evaluates the factorials of the integers from 1 to 10 using an appropriate data type. (factorials are... factorial of 1 is 1, factorial of 5 is 120, or 1*2*3*4*5=120)

Problem 2:
Make a diamond - 1 asterisk at the top, 9 asterisks at it's widest - using only nested For...Next statements to print the asterisks AND spaces, minimizing use of output statements.

Visual Studio 2008 Log4net Multiple Modules, Same App.config Different Loggers, Dont Work?

Aug 20, 2009

I have 2 console apps projects in the same directory but different projects. There is some common code in the App_Code directory and a common app.config which gets build into seperate .exe.config files.One module (VScanDemonStarter) starts up and writes to one logger with its own appender going to a seperate file. It uses an process.start() to execute the other module (VScanDemon) in another command prompt hidden window.When I run VScanDemon by itself it puts entries into its log file. When I run VScanDemonStarter it puts entries into its (different) log file, the VScanDemon log file gets created, but no entries. I can see it is executing because some files get moved from one directory to another. Just no Log entries.

Structures And Arrays Of Structures?

Structure CheckRecord
Dim CheckNumber As Integer

The problem is this does work.What I get is "00000". and I found out that the "Checks(4)" Array does hold any value ie: on keeping the cursor over that, it shows "CheckAmount 0.0, CheckNumber 0 , CheckPaidTo Nothing ".

Create A List Of Structures Within A List Of Structures?

Jul 20, 2009

I'm attempting to create a list of structures that contains a list of structures. I can't seem to figure out how to properly allocate the object for the inner list of structures. I expect the outer list of structures to have a couple thousand entries and the inner list of structures to be fairly small at 2 to 10. Both lists will grow over time but the number of elements within the inner list will be constant for an instance of the outer list. Meaning, if an instance of the outer list has 2000 entries each of those will have the same number of elements on the inner list, say 4 entries.

Here is a simplified code fragment. This fragment makes no attempt to create the instance of the inner list "StructBlist" since I can't figure out where to put it. Tried "New List(Of StructB)" in the declaration as well as "Alist(0).StructBlist = New List(Of StructB)" but neither works.

Public Class Form1
Structure StructA
Dim FieldA1 As Integer

Are Modules The Same As VB6 Bas Files

using bas files in visual basic 6 because I could write functions or subs that I would just easily use over and over rather than keep rewriting code. Do these work in the same way in .net? If anyone has any good info on modules like how to start writing functions and subs. Assuming of course that they work like vb6 bas files. If I were to make this sub a function how would I do this and I am assuming the benefit of this specific example would be a Boolean to check if if saved the text file or not?

Using Modules In .NET Considered?

Jun 7, 2011

During the design of a new application I was wondering if using a module with properties is considered to be a bad practice. Some example code:

Module modSettings
public property Setting1 as string
public property DatabaseObject as IDatabaseObject
End Module

The code above is just an example to emphasize my question. In the past, this structure was used a lot in VB6. In the past I used it as well in my .NET projects.

But nowadays with buzzwords like Dependency Injection, Testability and Separation of Concerns the above structure smells bad. I can't really describe why, but it just feels wrong. I must admit I'm not very familiar with the keywords above, yet.So I'm wondering whether the above code really is a bad practice. If so, what would you use a Module for?

.net - Using The Same Modules In Multiple Projects?

Dec 30, 2010

I'm using Visual Studio 2010 and coding in VB.NET.

My problem is that I've collected all the modules I've written and intend to reuse and placed them in a separate folder. When I want to add a module from the above folder to any given project, it takes a copy of the module and places in the project's source code folder, instead of referencing the module in the folder containing all the other modules.

Is it possible to include a module in my project and leave it in the folder with all the other modules, so that when I improve upon a module, it'll affect all the projects that uses/references that module. Instead of me having to manually copy the new module to all the projects that uses/references the module. Right now I have multiple instances of the exact same module that i need to update manually when I improve code or add functionality?

Are Modules Used To Organize Code

Apr 11, 2011

I have been brought onto a project where a large amount of code has been written. Most of the code is appearing in the MainWindow.xaml.vb file (yes, this is a wpf project but I think the question is appropriate for this forum). The folks who developed the previous versions in Visual Basic 6 told me that they organized their code by using Modules. I was not aware of this practice and I have actually never even used modules. Can I use modules in this way so that I can logically group different areas of functionality within the application? Or is there a more preferred method?

IDE :: Modules Window While Debugging

Oct 7, 2009

I have read many many forums regarding the error message "No symbols have been loaded. The breakpoint will not be hit." I had this error message come up a while ago, so I opened a previous version of my project, and copied the newest version of the code I am working on into that project. Then when I debugged, everything worked fine...for a while. Then I got the error message back, so I did the same thing again, and who would have guessed the error message returned, out of the blue. I am working on the program and it works fine, then suddenly one time when I try to debug with a breakpoint I get that message again. So I did some more research and I found a post that recommended looking at the Modules window while debugging (under debug > windows > modules). And in this window under my project, it said "Cannot find or open the PDB file". However, I compared this to the previous version of the program, that works fine, and I noticed that under Path, for my project, the path that I see is not the path where my project is located. So what I am asking is can someone please tell me how to change that path to the correct path where my files are actually located? I believe that if the path is correct, it will find and load the symbols.
