I am trying to create an application that can have "modules" added to it. For example firefox can have firebug installed into it. I am trying to figure out how I can write my code so that other developers can put their controls where they want to and my program will know to use them. I am assuming that this is called making a framework.

View 12 RepliesYesterday I opened Visual Studio (2008 v 9.0.30729.1) and all the winform classes in my project display with class module icons with the little 'VB', instead of form module icons with the little form icon!
When I double click on a form module, the form designer doesn't open, just the code module.
When I run the project, it runs fine. There are no errors. The project builds fine.
I did Project --> show all files, and I can see the designer and resx files below the form module which doesn't look or act like a form module.
I can't open my forms to design them!

This seems like something that should be easy to find, but I have not been able to find it anywhere.Can anyone direct me to a resource that would have this? The problem is that when i have defined a function in one module with "coord" as type and try to assign a value in the other module with coord type i get error message "Value of type Main.Interfacing.Coord cannot be converted to Main.Espec.Coord", so basically how could i pass that structure?

I am in the process of developing a messaging framework for a windows application that sends messages to a java application. To be precise when the win app wants to send a message it simply drops the message in a common database table which will be picked up by the java app. The windows application is deployed across 10 application servers (10 instances) over citrix for load balancing.Each instance of the application is capable of sending a message to the java application and each of these messages should have a unique id. From my end I need to make sure every message generated has to carry a unique id so that they can be identified when necessary. All the messages can be cleared every day or two.i am not quite sure about a best method of achieving this. Initially I wanted to create a static method that serves the next available id (incrementing the last id by 1). But this approach willn't guarantee unique number as the application starts only when at least one user is logged on. For e.g .On one server the app starts when a user logs in, he then sends a message and then the application stops when that user logs off. So when a next request for the app comes to that server a new instance will be started.

Now what is happening is, I am passing structure variable MScan (Form1) to Form2 (see function of form2 InitFilter) byvalue. Then in form2 I am changing value of a copy of the structure (see variable MS being changed in a private sub). But then when I close form2, form1's variable of MScan also get the value of variable MS (declared in form2).
I don't understand as this is not suppose to happen. I have reloaded my project as well but this problem is there. Why is my form1's variable value MScan being changed by form2.
I am getting the error: 'User' is ambiguous between declarations in Modules 'My.MyProject' and 'My.MyProject'.I am trying to debug an ASP.NET web application compiled as a file system project. Obviously the namespaces in question are in-built Microsoft namespaces so there is no way to change anything here nor change any class definitions.

I have 2 console apps projects in the same directory but different projects. There is some common code in the App_Code directory and a common app.config which gets build into seperate .exe.config files.One module (VScanDemonStarter) starts up and writes to one logger with its own appender going to a seperate file. It uses an process.start() to execute the other module (VScanDemon) in another command prompt hidden window.When I run VScanDemon by itself it puts entries into its log file. When I run VScanDemonStarter it puts entries into its (different) log file, the VScanDemon log file gets created, but no entries. I can see it is executing because some files get moved from one directory to another. Just no Log entries.

View 1 RepliesI imported some code I found a few months ago for a client server messaging program from vs2003 and everything appeared to be ok, apart from a couple of niggles such as the windows form designer generated code being visible on the main form code page but i could live with that. I just tried to add a splash screen but when I went to the application tab to set it up there is no enable application framework checkbox and no windows application framework groupbox. I tried running my application again and now the xp visual style has gone and it looks terrible, is there anyway to get the application framework back on again or do I have to start a new project and copy and past all my code into the new project.
View 1 RepliesI have created a small multithreaded application using VB.NET. There is no problem when the user manually runs this application. A problem exists when I added this application on startup. It hangs after I rebooted the system. The application is still running its thread but I can't see its GUI because its frozen. If I kill it on task manager and started again, the application works fine. What could be the possible reason/s why this application hangs when added on startup?

or just a thought on this subject: the reason why the program hangs on startup is because the application is loaded while the .net framework service has not yet started.
I am essentially trying to create a list of records in VB.net using the 1.1 framework.It seems that I should be using an object even though I have only properties but no methods (more like a traditional record), I would like to store a list of objects, how can I create the list and add an instance of the object to the list.I do have sample code that almost works but it is too poor for public display.

View 1 RepliesI need to create a pdf file dynamically in vb.net. It needs to contain several images and lines of text. I am using VS 2003, so whatever solution I use will need to be compatible with the .net 1.1 framework. The current method I am using is wpcubed, but this requires that all images be converted to bmp format before adding them to the pdf, which can be extremely slow when dealing with a large number of images.
I am aware that there are an awful lot of other 3rd party products that claim to do this, and I have had a search through them. But without registering, downloading, installing and writing code to use each of them in turn, it is very difficult to differentiate between them. So far I have looked into evo pdf and pdfsharp,tallcomponents, [URL] but none seem to work with .net 1.1. (Although they don't make this abundantly clear.)
When I try to create a new asp.net application in vb.net vs 2008, visual studio just hangs without any error messages. It does create the virtual directory on iis but nothing happens. I have checked and iis is installed, then i re-installed vs 2008 and used the aspnet_regiis -i command to register aspent. but sitll no success.
