VS 2008 : Zip, Rar, And 7z - Decompress All These Files Using The Windows Utility?
Sep 3, 2010
Background: I have read a bunch of techniques to handle compression. I don't think SmartZipLib handles 7z. System.OS.compression does not seem to handle rar or 7z. I am trying to find one approach for all.The tools within Windows XP seem to handle them all from inside the file manager (at least on my computer).Question: how can I decompress all these files using the windows utility? I am guessing it is some sort of Shell command. Alternatively, is there another option?

I am making a utility that will read through the files in a listbox.I already have it where it can read the files but you have to have the file selected in the listbox. Im wanting it to do it to all listbox items instead of just the selected one. This is what I was using:

I want to find the framework class that enables one to choose an image at design-time. I can find the editor that is used at run-time - its the Drawing.Design.ImageEditor. At design time, however, a different editor pops up which allows one to choose an image from resources.I'm guessing I could run some kind of program, then open up the image editor, from the property grid, and see what new windows/classes have been created?

I am trying to delete rows of an .sdf file using the Database Explorer utility of Visual Basic. When doing so, I get the following error message:No rows were deleted.
A problem occurred attempting to delete row 1.
Error Source: Microsoft.VisualStudio.DataTools. Error Message: The row value(s) updated or deleted either do not make the row unique or they alter multiple rows(48 rows). Correct the errors and attempt to delete the row again or press ESC to cancel the change(s). It is correct that the data in the rows are not unique (and not supposed to be; there is no "error" to correct), but why should this prevent deleting them?

I have a app that is starting up a thread that runs the standard windows defrag utility. It also gives the user the option to cancel the defrag if they want to. Problem is if the thread defrag is running on is canceled is there any data loss or does it just do the last operation and then exit. For example the code goes something like this:
[Code]...
Code works exactly as it should, runs the defrag on a separate thread so my UI remains responsive. I'm just worried about the effect of the cancel on it, when you call a thread abort does the program running in the thread know it's being canceled and "cleanly" close? I don't want to abort a file move operation when it's defraging and end up with a corrupt file.

We have to learn VB.NET for the semester, my experience lies mainly with C# - not that this should make a difference to this particular problem. I've used just about the most simple way to save a file using the .NET framework, but Windows 7 won't let me save the file anywhere (or anywhere that I have found yet). Here is the code I am using to save a text file.

Is there a way to copy files where it gives you the option to overwrite all and show graphically the files being copied, in much the same way when copying files within windows. What I have at the moment is this:
My.Computer.FileSystem.CopyFile(DataDirectory.DataSource, BackupPath & "Restel.bak", True)
For Each FileFound As String In My.Computer.FileSystem.GetFiles(SystemDataPath & "", FileIO.SearchOption.SearchTopLevelOnly, "*.rtf")
FileName = My.Computer.FileSystem.GetName(FileFound)
My.Computer.FileSystem.CopyFile(FileFound, BackupPath & "" & FileName, FileIO.UIOption.AllDialogs, FileIO.UICancelOption.ThrowException)
Next
which overwrites automatically or shows it graphically prompting each time if the file already exists.

This is the first time I am working on compressing and decompressing data. I have a byte array(a dataset before compression) which is an already compressed data and I want to decompress it. But the decompression is to be done in .Net Compact framework 2.0 and this framework doesn't have System.IO.Compression library to use GZipStream or DeflateStream.

I would like to decompress/compress text files in zlib format.
Here's what I tried:
- Downloaded zlibwipa.dll from [URL] and tried to add a reference to it but got an error saying it is an invalid assembly.
- Downloaded DotZLib from [URL] but can't get it to work, error message: Unable to load DLL 'zlib.DLL': The specified module could not be found. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007E)
- Looked at this [URL] but couldn't do much with it
This files are textfiles created from flash with ActionScript 3.0, but compressed, using the ByteArray class's compress() method. I know Flash uses zlib algorithm for this, and I would like to open and use this file from vb.net.
I am using something like :
FileOpen(1, OpenMapDialog.FileName, OpenMode.Binary, OpenAccess.ReadWrite)
Dim a() As Byte = {}
FileGet(1, a)
[Code]....
How do I decompress a zlib compressed file with byte arrays?

I am just experimenting with loading images into a picture box. I have a modest size image (1024 x 768). If I time how long it takes to load some images from disk and display into a picturebox diagnostics.stopwatch) it takes less than half the time to load a bitmap than a jpeg. The jpeg is 50k or so and the bitmap about 2 meg in size. So the read time from disk would be slower for the bitmap but decompressing the jpeg is obviously the really taxing part for my machine. Nvidia cards and the like have some really fancy hardware on them so I am wondering if there is a way to offload the jpeg decompression into the graphics card's expensive gpu making the whole process quicker: faster read from disk and faster displaying of the image. I had a look at a direct x tutorial that simply loaded an image as a sprite and it took ages. I am obviously approaching it from the wrong point of view.

My students did a tutorial in HTML Help Workshop to add Help files to a VB 2008 Windows application. They zipped the files and uploaded them to our class web site.
I downloaded them at home, unzipped, and tried to check, but every one shows Table of Contents or Index and cannot find the .htm documents for the topic. The same thing happened in my office. However, these projects work correctly in our classroom
lab and do display the .htm files.

I have cooked up my first iteration of a code generator which creates the basic Entity models from a SQL Database Schema. Currently, It will scan a SQL Db Schema, and create .vb code files complete with private members and Public property declarations for every User table in the Database. My next step is having it add the basic CRUD procedures as well. Are we mere mortals able to access whatever technology allows the Partial class files created by vs to be hidden/Linked to their "parent" files, such as the Partial Class files for Windows forms or any other designer-generated control? My thinking is that it would be handy to be able to re-generate code files from the database if necessary to reflect changes in the schema, without overwriting any other properties or methods added to a class in addition to those derived from the database. SO I am hoing I can have the Auto-generated output go to a Partial Class file, and then use a regular class file of the same name for the rest of the code. My Concern is the multiplicity of files that might result, so I was hoping it is possible to "tuck them in" to the parent code file in the Class View.

Ok I know this question has been asked to death but I still have not seen a good answer. I have created an application in VS2010 using VB.NET. In my application I have an error log that is an XML file located in the Public gstLocalErrorLogLocation As String = Application.StartupPath & "ErrorLog"that gets written to in the event of an error so I can trouble shoot application easier. My application also downloads files from our FTP site and puts the files in Public gstLocalDownloadLocation As String = Application.StartupPath & "download"So I have files that get read and written to as well and created and deleted all in the Application.StartupPath which is either "c:Program Files(Application Directory)(Some Directory)(Some File)" or "c:Program Files (x86)(Application Directory)(Some Directory)(Some File)" depending on 32bit or 64bit Windows 7.
After creating the setup I install it on my test machine that have both Windows 7 32bit and 64bit.Everything in the application works great till I have to write to, delete or creat a file in those directories above. I know it is an access issue and the UAC. This will get installed on numerous systems so the options I have seen to change file or folder permission on the computers manually is not an option. What has to happen is after I install the application it just works like when you install it on XP. Some post have suggested that you us a user with administrator privilages or group which is all fine and dandy but the user I have used to test the application has all of that.
So what I am asking is how do you create an application with VS2010 in VB.NET that after creating a setup package and installing on Windows 7 will just work with out "Access to the path c:Program Files(Application Directory)(Some Directory)(Some File) is denied." If I have to install this on 100 Windows 7 computers it has to be a concreate no manually doing anything just install and work like when we installed on XP.

I am looking for information on using mstscax.dll in VB. The goal is to create a utility that logs into a remote service in the same manner as remote desktop. However, my utility is not required to show the desktop.I have a series of commands that I will start off with that will look for users, reset logins, shadow, and message. I have been using a batch file on my RDP to perform these functions, but we are already looking for more functionality and power than what the batch commands can offer. I am googling 'mstscax.dll' but the results have been less than satisfactory although I continue to search.

This is kind of an off-the-wall question but does anyone know if VS 2010 has somekind of utility that will allow you to just drag & drop controls onto a form or something that will help in visual design. I'm just talking for visual purposes only. No code-behind files or anything...almost like a canvas where you can place controls and labels, etc.

I am trying to create an application to make self-extracting Exe's in Visual Studio 2010 Express. I would like to have a box in which files can be dropped into, then when you click "Compile" it will compress all files dropped into the box along with 3 others I must have delivered to this self-extracting exe. When the newly created exe is run, it will launch "Install.exe". I know there are other items out there to build the self-extracting exe's. I would however like to make my own that always delivers these 3 specific files along with whatever is dropped into the application.

I am trying to build a date calculator utility (DateCalc). It returns the number of days, weeks, months etc between two dates.I worked hard and long trying to find out how to convert a date into a format on which you can perform math operations (for the "what's the date in 'n' days time" part) and it works! I can also use the minus operator to find out previous dates, from say 10000 days ago... BUT...I want to develop it further, and this is where I need help (i am still very newbie remember)Can you help me to find a way to code this bit to ignore weekends and saturdays or sundays individually, and a range of dates in its calculation? I have two datetime pickers and a some checkboxes.DTPickFromDTPickToChkBoxExWeekendChkBoxEXSaturdaysChkBoxExSundays An image of my form and it's components is here :--> [URL] Also, as part of my 'Datecalc', I'd like to find the dates of every other saturday and sunday in the future.
