VS 2008 Partial Class Files For Windows Forms Or Any Other Designer-generated Control?

Sep 24, 2009

I have cooked up my first iteration of a code generator which creates the basic Entity models from a SQL Database Schema. Currently, It will scan a SQL Db Schema, and create .vb code files complete with private members and Public property declarations for every User table in the Database. My next step is having it add the basic CRUD procedures as well. Are we mere mortals able to access whatever technology allows the Partial class files created by vs to be hidden/Linked to their "parent" files, such as the Partial Class files for Windows forms or any other designer-generated control? My thinking is that it would be handy to be able to re-generate code files from the database if necessary to reflect changes in the schema, without overwriting any other properties or methods added to a class in addition to those derived from the database. SO I am hoing I can have the Auto-generated output go to a Partial Class file, and then use a regular class file of the same name for the rest of the code. My Concern is the multiplicity of files that might result, so I was hoping it is possible to "tuck them in" to the parent code file in the Class View.

.net - Write A .NETCF Partial Class To Extend System.Windows.Forms.UserControl?

May 28, 2010

I'm writing a .NET CF (VBNET 2008 3.5 SP1) application, which has one master form, and it dynamically loads specific UserControls based on menu click, in a sort of framework idea. There are certain methods and properties these controls all need to work within the app. Right now I am doing this as an Interface, but this is aggravating as all get up, because some of the methods are optional, and yet I MUST implement them by the nature of interfaces.

Declare A WithEvents Class In Windows Form Designer Which Is Not Control Base

Jun 4, 2011

I am making a TabStrip control to hold a number of tabs just like TabControl, but only with the tabs, no page. The control has a "Tabs Collection", which stores a list of "Tab" class. "Tab" is not inherited from Control, but each tab has its events. So when the user add a "Tab" in the "Tabs Collection", each "Tab" instance should have a (Name) identifier, which user can access it in the code, and with WithEvents keyword so users can add event handlers to each "Tab". The expected out come should similar to this:

Friend TabStrip1 As TabStrip
Friend WithEvents t1 As Tab
...
Me.TabStrip1.Tabs.Add(t1)

Windows Form Designer Generated Code?

Feb 20, 2009

Most of my project was imported from an older version of VB (now I'm using 2008). All of the forms had a "Windows Form Designer Generated Code" that I could expand at the top of the form's code. When I created a new form, that was not there, and I found out that in the solution explorer you can "view all files" and expand the form and look at MyForm.Designer and that has the same type of instantiation code. My question is, is there some way to update the old ones so they too do not have that "form designer generated code" at the top?

Partial Entity Class With Shared Extension Not Associated With 'other' Partial Class In Client Using RIA Services?

Apr 21, 2011

I have extended an Entity Framework 4 entity class with a calculated property in a partial class. This member is not available on the client to which the entities are exposed via WCF RIA Services.when using C# appears to be changing the extension of the partial class file from .cs to .shared.cs. I tried this with my VB.Net solution (.vb to .shared.vb) and got a long list of errors. I believe what happened is that the partial class lost its association with the entity on the client - it inherited from object rather than EntityObject.

My best guess is that this is related to the way that VB.Net handles namespaces. Each project has a 'Root Namespace' which is prepended to anything that is defined within a code file. C# has a 'Default Namespace'which is the namespace into which new types are placed by default - via a namespace statement within the file. The partial class is probably having the client namespace prepended to it which puts it into a different namespace than the entity with which it is associated on the server. Is there any means of extending an entity in such a way that those extensions are available on the client via WCF RIA Services and VB.Net?

Change The Default Modifier From Friend To Private In The Windows Forms Designer In VS 2008?

Require That A Class Is A Windows.Forms.Control And Implements An Interface?

Nov 29, 2011

I'm not sure that I'm doing the right thing here..I'm writing a user control that's supposed to be (fairly) generic. It's a bit like a modified email client specifically tailored to some of the internal things we do.

The view is composed of two main pieces, a message list and a viewer. I need this viewer to be interchangeable, so if someone wants a different style of view they can simply handle an event and change a property. My original idea was to just have an INoteViewer, but since I'm adding it to my form I also need to guarantee that this object is a Windows.Forms.Control of some sort.

Should I continue along these lines and maybe raise an ArgumentException if I can't cast it to INoteViewer, or should I go a different direction and create a class that inherits from Windows.Forms.Control?

Windows Forms Designer Broken In VS2010?

Sep 3, 2010

We've recently upgraded from VS2008 to VS2010. The conversion of our vb.net Windows Forms app went well, but we're now having big problems with the forms designer.retty much any change to the layout of a form (sometimes just a solution rebuild) will work once, but on recompile, the IDE designer refuses to display the form, the error message being a null-reference exception (with no details as to what).Closing and restarting VS2010 will cure it, but only for one compile cycle - and it's obviously not practical to close and reopen every time. Closing and reopening the form does not fix it.

.net - Visual Studio's Windows Forms Designer From Deleting Controls?

Apr 20, 2010

With several forms of mine, I occasionally run into the following issue: I edit the form using the designer (Visual Studio 2008, Windows Forms, .NET 2.0, VB.NET) to add components, only to find out later that some minor adjustments were made (e.g. the form's size is suddenly changed by a few pixels), and controls get deleted. This happens silently — event-handling methods automatically have their Handles suffix removed, too, so they never get called, and there's no compiler error. I only notice much later or not at all, because I'm working on a different area in the form.

As an example, I have a form with a SplitContainer containing an Infragistics UltraListView to the left, and an UltraTabControl to the right. I added a new tab, and controls within, and they worked fine. I later on found out that the list view's scrollbar was suddenly invisible, due to its size being off, and at least one control was removed from a different tab that I hadn't been working on.

Is this a known issue with the WinForms Designer, or with Infragistics? I use version control, of course, so I can compare the changes and merge the deleted code back in, but it's a tedious process that shouldn't be necessary. Are there ways to avoid this? Is there a good reason for this to occur?

One clue is that the control that was removed may have code (such as a Load event handler) that expects to be run in run time, not design time, and may be throwing an exception. Could this cause Visual Studio to remove the control?

Custom Code Designer Generated?

Jan 20, 2011

but it's something I'm pretty consistently needing for the sake of my own sanity, so:If you add a Settings file to any project in Visual Studio, VS provides a GUI making it quick/easy to add a new Setting entry and assign it a Type; at that point the actual code-behind is automagically created with a variable and a property exposing that variable. Can we build our own designers to generate code this way, with a GUI allowing for those quick/easy variable/property assignments?

Simple Usercontrol's Designer-generated Code Has Errors In It?

However, when I add my user control to another project the designer-generated code has errors in it. Designer Generated Lookup Throws Error On Form Close

I have a project with multiple forms that are used to edit tables in a project data source (access DB). All the forms work fine, except the ones that use designer generated lookups.

When I am editing a row in a bound DGV on the lookup forms, they function fine, and the save button works fine. However, once I go to close the form it starts throwing "System.ArgumentException: DataGridViewComboBoxCell value is not valid." multiple times.

I've created applications similar to this in VS2008 without any issues.
