VS 2008 Properties In 'groups' (class) In Designer (property Grid)?

Jul 29, 2009

I'm creating a UserControl that draws a simple radial gauge. I need it to be very customizable; the user should be able to customize everything such as the colors, fonts, sizes. So, I just made a property for every customizable detail. For example, I had ScaleFont, ScaleColor, ScaleStart, ScaleEnd, ScaleInnerRadius, ScaleOuterRadius, ScaleTickmarkFrequenty, etc.. etc.. etc...

Because there are so many properties about the same subject, I wanted to 'group' these properties into one "property". I've seen this done loads of times in third party controls, but I've never done it before myself.The idea is that the properties can be accessed like

Me.Gauge1.ScaleSettings.Start = 10
Me.Gauge1.ScaleSettings.End = 80
...

So far, I tried creating a class for each group, for example a clsScaleSettings class, containing properties like Font, Color, Start, End, InnerRadius, OuterRadius, TickmarkFrequenty, etc (corresponding to the same properties as above).

Then, for every 'group' or class, I create a Property. For example, I have the ScaleSettings property, which simply returns an instance of the clsScaleSettings class (I initialize the instance only once of course):

vb.net
Private _ScaleSettings As New clsScaleSettings
Public Property ScaleSettings() As clsScaleSettings

[code]....

Now, this works in the code editor. I can now use

Gauge1.ScaleSettings.Font = Me.Font

for example, and it sets the font correctly.But, I does not work in the designer, in the Property Grid. The whole reason I made the effort to move and rename nearly all properties (about 70!), and all references to those properties, to separate classes, was so that the user could design the gauge more easily using the Property Grid!Instead of having 15 settings related to the scale, scattered all over the Property Grid, he can now have one ScaleSettings property, which he can expand, and then he can edit the properties of that group easily.The ScaleSettings property is greyed out in the property grid... So I cannot expand it and view it's underlying properties.

VS 2008 Partial Class Files For Windows Forms Or Any Other Designer-generated Control?

Sep 24, 2009

I have cooked up my first iteration of a code generator which creates the basic Entity models from a SQL Database Schema. Currently, It will scan a SQL Db Schema, and create .vb code files complete with private members and Public property declarations for every User table in the Database. My next step is having it add the basic CRUD procedures as well. Are we mere mortals able to access whatever technology allows the Partial class files created by vs to be hidden/Linked to their "parent" files, such as the Partial Class files for Windows forms or any other designer-generated control? My thinking is that it would be handy to be able to re-generate code files from the database if necessary to reflect changes in the schema, without overwriting any other properties or methods added to a class in addition to those derived from the database. SO I am hoing I can have the Auto-generated output go to a Partial Class file, and then use a regular class file of the same name for the rest of the code. My Concern is the multiplicity of files that might result, so I was hoping it is possible to "tuck them in" to the parent code file in the Class View.

C# - Prevent Designer Class From Being Rebuilt?

Is there some explicit way I can prevent Visual Studio 2010 from rebuilding this class each time I run the project?

.net - Given A Large Number Of Objects, Create Multiple Forms In Designer For Them Or Use Code To Create The Forms?

Dec 29, 2010

If I have a large number of classes, each similar to the other in certain aspects (they all share a common base class, but each does things differently), and I need to create Windows forms for each to allow easy changing of their values through a GUI? Create one matching form for each object in VS' forms designer, Or Use code to create the forms dynamically at runtime.

#2 makes the most sense to me, because a lot of these objects will share very common features of the form, notably "Ok" and "Cancel" buttons. But one object might need to draw a textbox on the form while another might need to draw a combobox. Not to mention, if I want to put icons on the "Ok" and "Cancel" buttons, I'd have to do this for each copy of the form in designer, and that sounds like it could get out of hand quickly.But is drawing forms through code sane? VS' forms designer is pretty sophisticated and designed to make life easier. Am I wise to consider ignoring its functionality and diving into the trench warfare of forms design through code? Or are there examples of automating form creation based on an existing object's properties?

Declare A WithEvents Class In Windows Form Designer Which Is Not Control Base

Jun 4, 2011

I am making a TabStrip control to hold a number of tabs just like TabControl, but only with the tabs, no page. The control has a "Tabs Collection", which stores a list of "Tab" class. "Tab" is not inherited from Control, but each tab has its events. So when the user add a "Tab" in the "Tabs Collection", each "Tab" instance should have a (Name) identifier, which user can access it in the code, and with WithEvents keyword so users can add event handlers to each "Tab". The expected out come should similar to this:

Friend TabStrip1 As TabStrip
Friend WithEvents t1 As Tab
...
Me.TabStrip1.Tabs.Add(t1)

IDE :: Design A ContextMenuStrip In A Designer Without A Relation To A Specific Form Or UserControl Class?

Oct 16, 2011

in VS 2008, is there a way to design a ContextMenuStrip in a designer without a relation to a specific Form or UserControl class? For example,if you need the same ContextMenuStrip in Form1, Form2 and Form3, in which of them am I to design the ContextMenuStrip? Do I have to add a "pseudo-Form" to the project that contains my shared ContextMenuStrips and create only one instance of that Form, or is there another way? I consider this a programmatic hack, that's why my question is whether the IDE offers something better.

VS 2008 When To Create A New Class Instance

Jun 22, 2010

I understand if i was to create my own class i would need to declare a variable with the new keyword to create an object to access the encapsulated methods properties etc, unless they were declared shared.

dim myVar as myClass = new myClass

But in this next example is where i have become confused. i have added the mschart control to the form and used the hittest function with the following code.

Dim myVar as hittestresult
myvar = me.chart1.hittest(e.x,e.y)

Why wasn't it necessary to create a new instance of the class 1st. Does the hittest function return an object or a reference pointer to the object. To clarify what's the protocol for when & when not to create a new instance of the class in use.

Create A New Class That Inherits From The Base Form Class And Define A New() Method With Parameters?

I have been working on an app that was basically a vb6 app but had to be changed and I did it all using VB 2008. works well, great. One of the problems that I had was to work on different groupboxes or frames. Since they are layered on top of each other, working on one frame would mess up the others. Eventually it all went okay. but now if i want to add another item in the menu and hence add another groupbox (or frame) in the same app - it would definitely be a nightmare.
