Windows Form Designer Generated Code?

Most of my project was imported from an older version of VB (now I'm using 2008). All of the forms had a "Windows Form Designer Generated Code" that I could expand at the top of the form's code. When I created a new form, that was not there, and I found out that in the solution explorer you can "view all files" and expand the form and look at MyForm.Designer and that has the same type of instantiation code. My question is, is there some way to update the old ones so they too do not have that "form designer generated code" at the top?

VS 2008 Partial Class Files For Windows Forms Or Any Other Designer-generated Control?

I have cooked up my first iteration of a code generator which creates the basic Entity models from a SQL Database Schema. Currently, It will scan a SQL Db Schema, and create .vb code files complete with private members and Public property declarations for every User table in the Database. My next step is having it add the basic CRUD procedures as well. Are we mere mortals able to access whatever technology allows the Partial class files created by vs to be hidden/Linked to their "parent" files, such as the Partial Class files for Windows forms or any other designer-generated control? My thinking is that it would be handy to be able to re-generate code files from the database if necessary to reflect changes in the schema, without overwriting any other properties or methods added to a class in addition to those derived from the database. SO I am hoing I can have the Auto-generated output go to a Partial Class file, and then use a regular class file of the same name for the rest of the code. My Concern is the multiplicity of files that might result, so I was hoping it is possible to "tuck them in" to the parent code file in the Class View.

but it's something I'm pretty consistently needing for the sake of my own sanity, so:If you add a Settings file to any project in Visual Studio, VS provides a GUI making it quick/easy to add a new Setting entry and assign it a Type; at that point the actual code-behind is automagically created with a variable and a property exposing that variable.Can we build our own designers to generate code this way, with a GUI allowing for those quick/easy variable/property assignments?

On a recent project I stumbled across a page of code that looked unfamiliar, but which evidently was the code behind my form design. I'll copy and paste an excerpt to show you what I mean:

I thought this was a useful way to back up my project via email because it's in text form. But now I can't find the same information. I've looked in the Object Browser but couldn't find it anywhere. I think I stumbled on it the first time by right clicking Go to definition, but now that doesn't take me anywhere if I click on say form1. So where will I find this mysterious page that has all the form items information in text, not graphic form? Can't find it anywhere.

So I've created a very simple UserControl that is pretty much just a combo box that has US States in it and a couple properties to return the selected value as an enumeration or a string, etc.The enumeration and string values I'm using are being referenced from an external library which is working. However, when I add my user control to another project the designer-generated code has errors in it. [code] I would assume that this probably has something to do with project settings or something similar for the user control. The control itself is in a separate project and compiled as a .dll which has been added to my main project's toolbox and subsequently added to my form. [code]

I am trying to use a script mananger to use page methods to communicate between the server and client side of my page. I have added this code to the html

I am attempting to update an existing winforms application, that was created with a dataset control on all the winforms pages. I have ported it from VS 2008 to VS 2010 and I need to update the database section and connect it to the SQL backend using traditional code method.In the Solution explorer, when I click on the Dataset files, and click "Exclude From project" I am unable to build the project.Is it advisable to comment out the code lines that refer to the dataset in the .designer.vb files?

Designer Generated Lookup Throws Error On Form Close

I have a project with multiple forms that are used to edit tables in a project data source (access DB). All the forms work fine, except the ones that use designer generated lookups.

When I am editing a row in a bound DGV on the lookup forms, they function fine, and the save button works fine. However, once I go to close the form it starts throwing "System.ArgumentException: DataGridViewComboBoxCell value is not valid." multiple times.

I've created applications similar to this in VS2008 without any issues.

We've recently upgraded from VS2008 to VS2010. The conversion of our vb.net Windows Forms app went well, but we're now having big problems with the forms designer.retty much any change to the layout of a form (sometimes just a solution rebuild) will work once, but on recompile, the IDE designer refuses to display the form, the error message being a null-reference exception (with no details as to what).Closing and restarting VS2010 will cure it, but only for one compile cycle - and it's obviously not practical to close and reopen every time. Closing and reopening the form does not fix it.

With several forms of mine, I occasionally run into the following issue: I edit the form using the designer (Visual Studio 2008, Windows Forms, .NET 2.0, VB.NET) to add components, only to find out later that some minor adjustments were made (e.g. the form's size is suddenly changed by a few pixels), and controls get deleted. This happens silently — event-handling methods automatically have their Handles suffix removed, too, so they never get called, and there's no compiler error. I only notice much later or not at all, because I'm working on a different area in the form.

As an example, I have a form with a SplitContainer containing an Infragistics UltraListView to the left, and an UltraTabControl to the right. I added a new tab, and controls within, and they worked fine. I later on found out that the list view's scrollbar was suddenly invisible, due to its size being off, and at least one control was removed from a different tab that I hadn't been working on.

Is this a known issue with the WinForms Designer, or with Infragistics? I use version control, of course, so I can compare the changes and merge the deleted code back in, but it's a tedious process that shouldn't be necessary. Are there ways to avoid this? Is there a good reason for this to occur?

One clue is that the control that was removed may have code (such as a Load event handler) that expects to be run in run time, not design time, and may be throwing an exception. Could this cause Visual Studio to remove the control?

VS 2008 - Windows Forms Designer Lineshape Echo Artifact

In a windows forms class in Visual Basic 2008, there are several horizontal lines created with the lineshape control dragged from the toolbox. A very strange thing is happening with the horizontal lines. In the forms designer, all of the the lines (both horizontal and vertical) look fine, but when the program is executed (in debug mode), about 3 seconds after painting the screen nicely, I get echos of portions of the horizontal lines about 50px or so above my horizontal lines. I am trying to figure out how to generate code from user input. If I have a large number of classes, each similar to the other in certain aspects (they all share a common base class, but each does things differently), and I need to create Windows forms for each to allow easy changing of their values through a GUI? Create one matching form for each object in VS' forms designer, Or Use code to create the forms dynamically at runtime.

#2 makes the most sense to me, because a lot of these objects will share very common features of the form, notably "Ok" and "Cancel" buttons. But one object might need to draw a textbox on the form while another might need to draw a combobox. Not to mention, if I want to put icons on the "Ok" and "Cancel" buttons, I'd have to do this for each copy of the form in designer, and that sounds like it could get out of hand quickly.But is drawing forms through code sane? VS' forms designer is pretty sophisticated and designed to make life easier. Am I wise to consider ignoring its functionality and diving into the trench warfare of forms design through code? Or are there examples of automating form creation based on an existing object's properties?

I've been working on a project the last couple of day with the help of a lot of you out there. I've more or less finished the design of the interfase, but there are stange this happening with the form. I can say much about what is wrong because I dont understand it, but I would like to. I have added the form Class code and the Designer Code, is that enough or is more required? Change The Default Modifier From Friend To Private In The Windows Forms Designer In VS 2008?

When I develop a Windows Forms app in Visual Studio using C#, every control that I add to my form is by default marked as private, which is what I want.

When using VB.NET, every control is by default marked as Friend (the equivalent of internal in C#), which is not what I want.

Can I just change this default? It seems like surely it's a setting somewhere.

Adding Handler To Code-generated Form And Picturebox?

I've got a form with a TabControl. PictureBoxes (containing thumbnails) are added to each TabPage thru a loop. A click event Handler is added for each PictureBox. When a PictureBox is clicked, a new form is created thru code and a PictureBox is added to it that shows the pictures enlarged. What I need is to add another Handler to the PictureBox in the code-generated form so that I can rotate the pictures because some of them (photographs) were taken with the camera at 90 degree angles from vertical. I've tried to come up with a solution but I always run into the problem of the PictureBox on the code-generated form needing to be declared WithEvents before a Handler can be added.

Code for adding PictureBoxes to TabControl:

In VS2010, targeting Framework 4.0, I have a UserControl which contains a TableLayoutPanel with an empty second row.Is it possible to add items to this second row using the Windows Forms Designer, or do I have to do it all via code?
