Windows Forms Designer Broken In VS2010?

We've recently upgraded from VS2008 to VS2010. The conversion of our vb.net Windows Forms app went well, but we're now having big problems with the forms designer.retty much any change to the layout of a form (sometimes just a solution rebuild) will work once, but on recompile, the IDE designer refuses to display the form, the error message being a null-reference exception (with no details as to what).Closing and restarting VS2010 will cure it, but only for one compile cycle - and it's obviously not practical to close and reopen every time. Closing and reopening the form does not fix it.

Trying to use ESRI MapObjects 2.4 in Visual Studio 2010 now traps an error when you instantiate the map object:Additional information: Could not load the structure 'ESRI.MapObjects2.Core.CancelActionConstants' from assembly 'ESRI.MapObjects2.Core, Version=2.4.1.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=8fc3cc631e44ad86'. I know how to dock a component using the windows forms designer as well as through code but I am having a problem with one thing. I am trying to dock a richtextbox on a panel through code but it seems to be filling up all of the space instead of just the panel. When I put it on the form and dock it works fine. With several forms of mine, I occasionally run into the following issue: I edit the form using the designer (Visual Studio 2008, Windows Forms, .NET 2.0, VB.NET) to add components, only to find out later that some minor adjustments were made (e.g. the form's size is suddenly changed by a few pixels), and controls get deleted. This happens silently — event-handling methods automatically have their Handles suffix removed, too, so they never get called, and there's no compiler error. I only notice much later or not at all, because I'm working on a different area in the form.
As an example, I have a form with a SplitContainer containing an Infragistics UltraListView to the left, and an UltraTabControl to the right. I added a new tab, and controls within, and they worked fine. I later on found out that the list view's scrollbar was suddenly invisible, due to its size being off, and at least one control was removed from a different tab that I hadn't been working on.
Is this a known issue with the WinForms Designer, or with Infragistics? I use version control, of course, so I can compare the changes and merge the deleted code back in, but it's a tedious process that shouldn't be necessary. Are there ways to avoid this? Is there a good reason for this to occur?
One clue is that the control that was removed may have code (such as a Load event handler) that expects to be run in run time, not design time, and may be throwing an exception. Could this cause Visual Studio to remove the control?

It works, I click the little arrow, the context menu appears:I click the menu item, the event is fired, the control is docked:but the menu description is not updated or refreshed (it should show "Undock from parent container"). Then if I click outside the control to deselect it and then I click back on the arrow to show the menu, the right menu item is displayed:How do I refresh the menu items?

In a windows forms class in Visual Basic 2008, there are several horizontal lines created with the lineshape control dragged from the toolbox. A very strange thing is happening with the horizontal lines. In the forms designer, all of the the lines (both horizontal and vertical) look fine, but when the program is executed (in debug mode), about 3 seconds after painting the screen nicely, I get echos of portions of the horizontal lines about 50px or so above my horizontal lines. When I develop a Windows Forms app in Visual Studio using C#, every control that I add to my form is by default marked as private, which is what I want.
When using VB.NET, every control is by default marked as Friend (the equivalent of internal in C#), which is not what I want.
Can I just change this default? It seems like surely it's a setting somewhere.

I have cooked up my first iteration of a code generator which creates the basic Entity models from a SQL Database Schema. Currently, It will scan a SQL Db Schema, and create .vb code files complete with private members and Public property declarations for every User table in the Database. My next step is having it add the basic CRUD procedures as well. Are we mere mortals able to access whatever technology allows the Partial class files created by vs to be hidden/Linked to their "parent" files, such as the Partial Class files for Windows forms or any other designer-generated control? My thinking is that it would be handy to be able to re-generate code files from the database if necessary to reflect changes in the schema, without overwriting any other properties or methods added to a class in addition to those derived from the database. SO I am hoing I can have the Auto-generated output go to a Partial Class file, and then use a regular class file of the same name for the rest of the code. My Concern is the multiplicity of files that might result, so I was hoping it is possible to "tuck them in" to the parent code file in the Class View.

I am attempting to update an existing winforms application, that was created with a dataset control on all the winforms pages. I have ported it from VS 2008 to VS 2010 and I need to update the database section and connect it to the SQL backend using traditional code method.In the Solution explorer, when I click on the Dataset files, and click "Exclude From project" I am unable to build the project.Is it advisable to comment out the code lines that refer to the dataset in the .designer.vb files?

I have an installation of VS2010 with Windows 7 at work and a laptop with Windows 7 X64. I transferred a whole set of project files to the laptop but the directory "Documents" does not exist on the laptop - it is called "My Documents". As such of course I get errors when loading the project on the X64 machine as the resource files cannot be found. I have tried changing the name of the directory to "Documents" to accord with the other PC, and this was apparetnly successful. But, VS still does not "see" the files in the renamed directory. How can I simply change the path name for the resource files so that VS can see these files?

I have a label that displays text kinda like a title to something (autosize = falseTextAlignment = MiddleCenter) and whenever the label control isn't wide enough to display the single line of text it tries to auto-wrap it causing half of the text to be chopped off at the top and half of it chopped off at the bottom. I would rather it stay on a single line and cut the text off from the right

If I have a large number of classes, each similar to the other in certain aspects (they all share a common base class, but each does things differently), and I need to create Windows forms for each to allow easy changing of their values through a GUI? Create one matching form for each object in VS' forms designer, Or Use code to create the forms dynamically at runtime.
#2 makes the most sense to me, because a lot of these objects will share very common features of the form, notably "Ok" and "Cancel" buttons. But one object might need to draw a textbox on the form while another might need to draw a combobox. Not to mention, if I want to put icons on the "Ok" and "Cancel" buttons, I'd have to do this for each copy of the form in designer, and that sounds like it could get out of hand quickly.But is drawing forms through code sane? VS' forms designer is pretty sophisticated and designed to make life easier. Am I wise to consider ignoring its functionality and diving into the trench warfare of forms design through code? Or are there examples of automating form creation based on an existing object's properties?

I have a desktop WinForms app that I would like to be able to connect to my Sql Server database that I have through my GoDaddy webhost. Problem is not all ISP's forward the 1433 port (like mine) so I can't connect directly to the DB from any of my home computers without buying the expensive dedicated IP address package, which has me thinking since my website can connect directly to the DB I was wondering if it might be possible for me to make a dll that would have all of the database interaction through subs and functions and all my WinForms app would have to do is connect to that dll through http or something, anyone know if I could do something along those lines?
Reason for this is I would like other people to be able to connect to this database (the winforms app would have screens for creating and managing accounts, etc) without worrying about whether their ISP would block the DB port(s) it would just work.

When I create an inherited form, after creation for some reason I cant see the form to edit in designer, I mean I cant drag and drop buttons, labels or any control to it since I just CANT see it, I have included a pic of what I see below where Form1 is the Inherited Form. I have VS2010 and have targeted Framework 2.0 to work with SQL Server 2000 which works great. The problem seems to be when I go to my release folder, right mouse click on my test.exe file and click on Compatibility, then select 'Run this program in compatibility mode for' and then select Windows 2000 from the combobox. i get this error upon execution of text.exe:

Visual Studio 2010 Windows Applications Visual Basic-- not able to resize or move controls or form with my mouse in designer window. When hover over sizing handles or form edge, cursor changes to double headed area but nothing moves. I can drag controls with mouse onto form. I successfully resized by pressing shift key and using keyboard arrow keys. I am using Toshiba Satellite L665D, Window 7 64x.

I thought this was a useful way to back up my project via email because it's in text form. But now I can't find the same information. I've looked in the Object Browser but couldn't find it anywhere. I think I stumbled on it the first time by right clicking Go to definition, but now that doesn't take me anywhere if I click on say form1. So where will I find this mysterious page that has all the form items information in text, not graphic form? Can't find it anywhere.

Most of my project was imported from an older version of VB (now I'm using 2008). All of the forms had a "Windows Form Designer Generated Code" that I could expand at the top of the form's code. When I created a new form, that was not there, and I found out that in the solution explorer you can "view all files" and expand the form and look at MyForm.Designer and that has the same type of instantiation code. My question is, is there some way to update the old ones so they too do not have that "form designer generated code" at the top?

In VS2010, targeting Framework 4.0, I have a UserControl which contains a TableLayoutPanel with an empty second row.Is it possible to add items to this second row using the Windows Forms Designer, or do I have to do it all via code?

I have a typed dataset with table adapters. I use this method because it makes it easier to design the layout of my DataGridView.The problem is I have added a new table to my dataset. When I go to the "Data Sources" list view, I can see the new table.However, if I add a new DataGridView to my form then attempt to bind it to my new data table, the table will not show up in the list of tables for that dataset.

I am desinging a form with mutiple controls on a tab page control and was moving controls between tab pages by cutting and pasting them. The forms designer obviously got confused at some stage and I now have controls that are declared in the designer.vb but do not appear anywhere on the form.
I can't even rename the controls that are there which have been given generic names to the names I want because they apparently already exist. I realise I could edit the designer.vb and remove the references to these controls but that seems fraught with danger?

I though I had solved this problem, but it is back:Code generation for property 'SelectedPeople' failed. Error was: 'Type 'ECS.Entities.Persistency.Person' in Assembly 'ECS, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' is not marked as serializable.'The property on the error message is a List(Of Person) and for some reason it trigger this error, for almost anything I do, and its getting really anoying.Okanswering to the answers here is a little more information about the problem.
Yes it is during design time, it happens bascially anytime a open a form that has a UserControl that contains the Selected property in it, sometimes it happens even if I don't have focus on the form, also if I try to compile/run it happens and the message come in the form of a Message Box with just a OK, ECS.Entities.Persistency.Person is just a LINQ to SQL Generated Class, this should not matter at all to the problem, although I have added the attribute before the posting.he reason that this happens is because the Designer attempts to put the property on the Property Panel, and for that to happen, serialization happens.tryed to hide the property from the designer by using this attributes.
