Forms Designer - Controls Declared But Not Appearing On Form - Can't Even Rename
Jun 22, 2010
I am desinging a form with mutiple controls on a tab page control and was moving controls between tab pages by cutting and pasting them. The forms designer obviously got confused at some stage and I now have controls that are declared in the designer.vb but do not appear anywhere on the form.
I can't even rename the controls that are there which have been given generic names to the names I want because they apparently already exist. I realise I could edit the designer.vb and remove the references to these controls but that seems fraught with danger?

VBExpress 2010 .Net 4.0 I'm trying to have a form that you click on a button and it goes to a new page of the same size in the same location. An example of this type of thing would be the different pages of an install wizard. In this particular project, I have an "instructions" page that you click on that takes you to a new form. On this page is a "back" button that takes you back to the main screen. I'm just not sure how this type of thing is normally done. What I have done works, but you can see the page 'flip' a little, and the form button on the taskbar disappears and reappears as the new one loads.
[Code]...
and I have an equivalent subroutine on the other form to get back. At first I had the Three middle line of code interchanged, which looked much smoother, but for some reason it didn't work on the first click, upon which the form would suddenly move to the wrong location, after which it would work fine, no matter where I moved the form.
I have a feeling that this is probably done in a completely different way, but can't think of a better way of doing it. One way would be to just use one form and change the controls instead, but it would get quite cluttered.

Visual Studio 2010 Windows Applications Visual Basic-- not able to resize or move controls or form with my mouse in designer window. When hover over sizing handles or form edge, cursor changes to double headed area but nothing moves. I can drag controls with mouse onto form. I successfully resized by pressing shift key and using keyboard arrow keys. I am using Toshiba Satellite L665D, Window 7 64x.

With several forms of mine, I occasionally run into the following issue: I edit the form using the designer (Visual Studio 2008, Windows Forms, .NET 2.0, VB.NET) to add components, only to find out later that some minor adjustments were made (e.g. the form's size is suddenly changed by a few pixels), and controls get deleted. This happens silently — event-handling methods automatically have their Handles suffix removed, too, so they never get called, and there's no compiler error. I only notice much later or not at all, because I'm working on a different area in the form.
As an example, I have a form with a SplitContainer containing an Infragistics UltraListView to the left, and an UltraTabControl to the right. I added a new tab, and controls within, and they worked fine. I later on found out that the list view's scrollbar was suddenly invisible, due to its size being off, and at least one control was removed from a different tab that I hadn't been working on.
Is this a known issue with the WinForms Designer, or with Infragistics? I use version control, of course, so I can compare the changes and merge the deleted code back in, but it's a tedious process that shouldn't be necessary. Are there ways to avoid this? Is there a good reason for this to occur?
One clue is that the control that was removed may have code (such as a Load event handler) that expects to be run in run time, not design time, and may be throwing an exception. Could this cause Visual Studio to remove the control?

However, now when I open it in design view and add a new tableadapter I now cannot reference the new objects from the code. Likewise if I delete one of the existing tables in the dataset, it still appears to be there from the code (ie in intellisense)Similarly, when I examine the .xsd file, the changes I've made i the designer appear, but the changes are NOT happening in the dataset.designer.vb file. It's as if the two files are somehow out of sync

I have subclassed the ASP.NET Panel control to customise the rendering of the GroupingText. However, while it appears fine in the final output, it is not appearing correctly in the designer. A sample of what I am doing follows: Is there anything else I need to do to make it appear correctly in the designer?
Imports System.Web.UI
Public Class CustomPanel
Inherits Panel
Public Overrides Sub RenderBeginTag(ByVal writer As System.Web.UI.HtmlTextWriter)
Me.AddAttributesToRender(writer)

Yesterday I installed vs2008, installed SP1 all seems well.I have converted a project (from VS2005), it works fine but....When I try and modify any of the forms none of the controls aer displayed on the form.Additionally I have noticed that each form has a formname.designer.vb file, the top few lines of the code in the designer.vb files are;
<Global.Microsoft.VisualBasic.CompilerServices.DesignerGenerated()> _
Partial Class frmFullMarketView
Inherits System.Windows.Forms.Form
[Code]....
Then my controls are listed. Do I have to copy the code held in the seperate designer.vb file back to the 'formname.vb' file for all my forms? If so, why does VS2008 create all this extra work when converting forms from vs2005?

At the moment, I'm writing tons of custom control, which all fits my needs. But the thing is, each time I Debug the project, it doesn't update the form designer at all, not even the code. My solution to this is to Rebuild the project, which can take time. This is very frustrating.
I'm using Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate to compile.

Basically what I need to do is change a textbox on Form1 (AKA mainwin) from Form2 (AKA loginwin) using data that is inputted into Form2. I've done this before with applications by declaring Form1 in Form2, but this time I just get a NullReferenceException error. Here's the code I'm currently using for Form2. Maybe someone here can tell me why it's not working. [Code] I can't figure out why it's not working. I've used this same method before and it always worked.

I am attempting to update an existing winforms application, that was created with a dataset control on all the winforms pages. I have ported it from VS 2008 to VS 2010 and I need to update the database section and connect it to the SQL backend using traditional code method. In the Solution explorer, when I click on the Dataset files, and click "Exclude From project" I am unable to build the project. Is it advisable to comment out the code lines that refer to the dataset in the .designer.vb files?

In VB2008. Project has been running fine for months. But today many of the controls on my form, say they are not recognised and it's saying they are not declared. They are form controls, textboxes, comboboxes and labels, they are spelt correctly. If I double click a combo box, it takes me to the SelectedIndexChanged event for that control. Yet the combo box is not recognised in that procedure. E.g. MyCombo.Text, has an error of MyCombo is not declared.
This happened after changing the font ForColor for lots of controls at the end of last week. At least that was the last change I did before closing my project at the end of last week. The form has a tab control on it and this is only a problem for the controls which I changed the forcolor for. Tabs which I did not do this do, continue to work perfectly. The control names are not in IntelliSense.

I have a form containing two panels. In both panels there are two labels and textboxes. I set the 'Center In Form' property of the labels and textboxes to 'Horizontally' and 'Vertically' in design time respectively. But as the form is resizable, when the size of the form is increased or decreased at runtime the controls are no longer center aligned in the panels. How can I handle this problem (provided the main form needs to remain sizable)?

Everything worked great this morning on my ASP project. Suddenly, I have 48 errors. Similar to the following:
Name 'pnlVars' is not declared
'txtPolicyNo' is not a member of 'LetterWriterASP.UW'
Seems every control I reference is now no longer declared or not a member of my project. I checked the page, the controls are all there with the same names & IDs.

I have no idea what I have done wrong here, so I'll just attach my project as a zip file and see if any of you are kind enough to look into it for me.I am reasonably experienced in C#.NET but having trouble using VB.NET for a school assignment.I cannot open half of my forms in designer view because "To prevent possible data loss before loading the designer, the following errors must be resolved".

In my home form I have a splitcontainer and few buttons. When the buttons are clicked respective forms are opened in the splitcontainer. The splitcontainer is anchored- top, left, right, bottom so that when the home form is resized the splitcontainer resizes itself automatically. The controls within the other forms are also anchored properly to resize themselves accordingly. But the problem is when i open a form in the splitcontainer, even if I resize the home form, the controls in the form within the splitcontainer aren't resizing. The reason is when the home form is resized the splitcontainer is resizing itself accordingly but the form inside the splitcontainer isn't (as forms don't have anchor or dock properties so I couldn't set them). As a result though the controls in the sub form are anchored to resize themselves yet they aren't.

I am very interested to see the answer as I would like to know the significant differences (if any) of generally using one more than the other. In a few days, I will be starting my Java programming class to familiarize myself with the language.I do know that Java uses objects. My question/discussion is not necessarily related to .NET (although in a way, it is); my question is more about what is a better practice and why.Is it more proper to declare buttons and such through runtime rather than designer? Is it just more work typing everything? Or does build and run much faster?

I have two controls inside a user control. They are set to be anchored left and right in order too size with the window as it changes size. For some reason I'm having tons of issues getting this to work properly.
Particularly, when ever I build the project and the control reloads itself, these controls triple in size, and extend way off the control. If I re size them and repeat the process it happens again! Anyone have this issue or know what might cause it?

What is happening is after dropping a few controls onto a new windows form. I have found that for no apparent reason some of the controls just go missing. As of this post i just dragged a group box with a half dozen labels buttons and textboxes off to the bottom of the designer. I went to move them back up and found that i had lost 2 labels and 2 textboxes! Doing a clean build gives no errors. Windows still thinks they are on the form.
