Rebuild To Get The Designer Updated On Debug, With Custom Controls In Form?
Aug 10, 2011
At the moment, I'm writing tons of custom control, which all fits my needs. But the thing is, each time I Debug the project, it doesn't update the form designer at all, not even the code. My solution to this is to Rebuild the project, which can take time. This is very frustrating.
I'm using Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate to compile.

since I still use VB6 and the code is in VB8, I can't find the solution.The sub below is executed in a button's click event, and is supposed to save data to his database. It seems to work fine : you can add persons (in a separate form), and see them appear in the datagrid. You can stop the program, go back to the VB editor, and run it again (without rebuild), and the previously added persons will still be visible in the datagrid. But...If you add some persons, then go to the editor and force a rebuild (for example by adding more code), and than run the code again, the the previously added persons are gone (nomore visible in datagrid)!To me, it seems that the problem is to effectively update the database. I have searched on the internet about this topic, and I read that you must "set" the UpdateCommand.

I have come across a problem with visual studio 2010 & vb.net. i have a few custom controls on the form and few standard controls. When i build the application, the custom controls automatically change size and location. Anchoring and Dock properties are fine. Anchored to Top Left without dockstyle. Even if i fix the location and size in design mode, after i run the application the controls again change back to weird position.

Yesterday I installed vs2008, installed SP1 all seems well.I have converted a project (from VS2005), it works fine but....When I try and modify any of the forms none of the controls aer displayed on the form.Additionally I have noticed that each form has a formname.designer.vb file, the top few lines of the code in the designer.vb files are;
<Global.Microsoft.VisualBasic.CompilerServices.DesignerGenerated()> _
Partial Class frmFullMarketView
Inherits System.Windows.Forms.Form
[Code]....
Then my controls are listed. Do I have to copy the code held in the seperate designer.vb file back to the 'formname.vb' file for all my forms?If so, why does VS2008 create all this extra work when converting forms from vs2005?

I am desinging a form with mutiple controls on a tab page control and was moving controls between tab pages by cutting and pasting them. The forms designer obviously got confused at some stage and I now have controls that are declared in the designer.vb but do not appear anywhere on the form.
I can't even rename the controls that are there which have been given generic names to the names I want because they apparently already exist. I realise I could edit the designer.vb and remove the references to these controls but that seems fraught with danger?

I've started a project in Expression Blend and has been working the codes in Visual Studio 2008. It was alright, no problem. I've worked heaps of projects like that before without any problems. However, out of nowhere, my WPF designer in VS2008 now gives me the following error:
Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
at MS.Internal.Package.VSIsolationProviderService.CreateIsolationProvider(String identity, AssemblyReferenceProvider assemblyReferences, IEnumerable'1 assemblyFolders)
at MS.Internal.Providers.VSDesignerContext.GetIsolationProvider(IServiceProvider provider, [Code] .....
It displays the above instead of displaying the WPF designer. Also, I cannot Debug>Start Debugging the application anymore. I can still run/test/build it in Expression studio though. The funny thing is that if I restart a project in Expression blend, copy all the xaml codes, and copy all the vb .net codes from the original application, it works for some time, and then afterwards start giving me the same error at wpf designer in VS2008.

I have created a custom UserControl, with a custom designer, which contains a Panel which is editable. Any controls dropped onto this Panel will go off-form when an Anchor is set. This was already reported here and acknowledged as a bug:[URL].. Are there any known workarounds? Or available hotfixes for this issue?
I already implemented ISupportInitialize in my custom panel class, where i set the docking, which doesn't help. Here's the relevant code:

I have created a customised checkbox control (only the text and border appearance has been modified), and wanted to loop through them in a User quizto see which have been checked and are correct. I have used the Tag property (set to 1 or 0) to identify incorrect answers, and tried to loop through with the following code:For Each thing As GMAW.MyCheckBox In currentParent.ActiveMdiChild.Controls

I am attempting to update an existing winforms application, that was created with a dataset control on all the winforms pages. I have ported it from VS 2008 to VS 2010 and I need to update the database section and connect it to the SQL backend using traditional code method.In the Solution explorer, when I click on the Dataset files, and click "Exclude From project" I am unable to build the project.Is it advisable to comment out the code lines that refer to the dataset in the .designer.vb files?

When I hit the submit button I want the entered data to appear in textboxes on groupForm, but this isn't happening. I have to restart the form or hit the Refresh button for the data to appear.[code]...
I added groupForm.populate() at the end of the latter function for testing purposes, but I know that shouldn't be necessary ("populate" just loops over all items in the ProfitObjects array and calls NewProfitObjectsItem for each one).
Anyway; when I submit the data from the second form, the groupForm doesn't automatically show the new data. I either have to hit the refresh button or restart the form (it calls populate() on form load).
I simply want the new item to appear immediately after Submitting it. And it should, because that's what groupForm.NewProfitObjectsItem() does. And to top it off I added groupForm.populate(). I'm assuming it's not working because it's called from an external form, or because the other form is open/has the focus.

but it's something I'm pretty consistently needing for the sake of my own sanity, so:If you add a Settings file to any project in Visual Studio, VS provides a GUI making it quick/easy to add a new Setting entry and assign it a Type; at that point the actual code-behind is automagically created with a variable and a property exposing that variable.Can we build our own designers to generate code this way, with a GUI allowing for those quick/easy variable/property assignments?

Is it possible to make a form that can set the properties on a custom control in the designer? What I mean is I want to know if it is possible to show a dialog that allows you to set the settings for a certain property like if you were adding items to a listbox.

In Visual Studio 2005 or 2008, when adding any User Controls to a Windows Form or other User Control in a Project that implements and is using a custom settings provider, a "Failed to create component" error is displayed. If all references to the custom settings provider are removed from settings.settings and that file is saved then User Controls can be added to Windows Forms and User Controls. However, if the custom settings provider is referenced again in settings.settings, then opening the designer of a Form/Control which includes a User Control results in a "One or more errors encountered while loading the designer..." error message.
I have had a very difficult time in tracking down the root cause of this issue because I assumed it had to do with my code and not the IDE. I am working within the context of a large project which uses User Controls heavily and have written a custom settings provider to persist user settings to a SQL Express database. This settings provider works properly, however if I want to open any Forms or User Controls in designer view I must first manually remove all references to my custom settings provider in setting.settings and then re-add them after the changes are done which is inconvenient to say the least. This problem is not present if the Project is in C#.

I am very interested to see the answer as I would like to know the significant differences (if any) of generally using one more than the other. In a few days, I will be starting my Java programming class to familiarize myself with the language.I do know that Java uses objects.My question/discussion is not necessarily related to .NET (although in a way, it is); my question is more about what is a better practice and why.Is it more proper to declare buttons and such through runtime rather than designer? Is it just more work typing everything? Or does build and run much faster?

I have two controls inside a user control. They are set to be anchored left and right in order too size with the window as it changes size. For some reason I'm having tons of issues getting this to work properly.
Particularly, when ever I build the project and the control reloads itself, these controls triple in size, and extend way off the control. If I re size them and repeat the process it happens again! Anyone have this issue or know what might cause it?

What is happening is after dropping a few controls onto a new windows form. I have found that for no apparent reason some of the controls just go missing. As of this post i just dragged a group box with a half dozen labels buttons and textboxes off to the bottom of the designer. I went to move them back up and found that i had lost 2 labels and 2 textboxes! Doing a clean build gives no errors. Windows still thinks they are on the form.

I have created a custom designer (PannelloSfondoDesigner) for my custom control, a background panel (PannelloSfondo).
<Designer(GetType(PannelloSfondo.PannelloSfondoDesigner))>
Public Class PannelloSfondo
Inherits UserControl
[code]....
It works, I click the little arrow, the context menu appears:I click the menu item, the event is fired, the control is docked:but the menu description is not updated or refreshed (it should show "Undock from parent container"). Then if I click outside the control to deselect it and then I click back on the arrow to show the menu, the right menu item is displayed:How do I refresh the menu items?

I have been scouring for examples to give me some idea on what I need to do to create a skinable scrollbar. The only thing close that seems to work like I need is Cool Scrollbar The problem I am running into is on the designer...when I move it, resize it, or change the direction of the control (ScrollbarLayout), it seems to want to re-name the class the item is an object of from CBar to cbar.CBar. Once I position and align it properly to check, I can go through the Form1.Designer and simply remove the cbar. and get no errors. When I run the program, it is fine, so this is telling me that there is something wrong with the movement in the class...

I'm writing a custom control and I want to add a "MessageText" property of type String:
<Browsable(True),
DefaultValue(""),
Category("CustomControls"),
[code]....
The MessageText property is a multiline text, and the user must be able to set the text using the designer. The problem is that the designer doesn't allow to enter a newline directly for a string property.I want the same behaviour as the system TextBox's Text property, where you can click on the down arrow and write lines in the small text-editor that appears:How do I do that?

I created a server control which consist only of fews buttons.
CWNavigation.vb
<ToolboxData("<{0}:CWNavigation runat=""server""></{0}:CWNavigation>")> _
<DefaultProperty("Id")>[code.....
I then referenced it in my ASPX page. Take note that the control are in the same solution, same project located in Commun/Navigation/CWNavigation.vb.
<%@ Register TagPrefix="NAV" TagName="CWNavigation" Src="~/Commun/Navigation/CWNavigation.vb" %>
I added it to the page.
<NAV:CWNavigation ID="CWNavigationService" runat="server" />
But the designer file along with the code-behind generate it as.
Protected WithEvents CWNavigationService As Global.System.Web.UI.UserControl

With several forms of mine, I occasionally run into the following issue: I edit the form using the designer (Visual Studio 2008, Windows Forms, .NET 2.0, VB.NET) to add components, only to find out later that some minor adjustments were made (e.g. the form's size is suddenly changed by a few pixels), and controls get deleted. This happens silently — event-handling methods automatically have their Handles suffix removed, too, so they never get called, and there's no compiler error. I only notice much later or not at all, because I'm working on a different area in the form.
As an example, I have a form with a SplitContainer containing an Infragistics UltraListView to the left, and an UltraTabControl to the right. I added a new tab, and controls within, and they worked fine. I later on found out that the list view's scrollbar was suddenly invisible, due to its size being off, and at least one control was removed from a different tab that I hadn't been working on.
Is this a known issue with the WinForms Designer, or with Infragistics? I use version control, of course, so I can compare the changes and merge the deleted code back in, but it's a tedious process that shouldn't be necessary. Are there ways to avoid this? Is there a good reason for this to occur?
One clue is that the control that was removed may have code (such as a Load event handler) that expects to be run in run time, not design time, and may be throwing an exception. Could this cause Visual Studio to remove the control?
