Feb 26, 2011Is it possible to connect ado.net to an xml file and then make the xml file a data source on my project where I can bind controls to it in designer mode?

Lost Form In Designer Mode
Jun 10, 2010I have a project in MS Visual Studio 2008 - VB.NET. I have opened and closed my project which consists of two forms multiple times.Today when I open my project I cannot find one of my forms in designer mode.If I run my application the form displays correctly but I cannot view in designer mode to make changes.

Nov 14, 2011I use the data binding mode to fill data into a list box, that is just fill all of the data in the table. if I want to group one of the table column and only display it in the listbox, how can I get this done? I know how to add a getData query to my table adapter, but how can I bind that new datatable to the list box at runtime?? cuz I need to put the data binding mode information in before I run the application and in the binding mode is no way to choose that getData query.

Dec 6, 2011I am very interested to see the answer as I would like to know the significant differences (if any) of generally using one more than the other. In a few days, I will be starting my Java programming class to familiarize myself with the language.I do know that Java uses objects.My question/discussion is not necessarily related to .NET (although in a way, it is); my question is more about what is a better practice and why.Is it more proper to declare buttons and such through runtime rather than designer? Is it just more work typing everything? Or does build and run much faster?

Mar 1, 2009Yesterday I installed vs2008, installed SP1 all seems well.I have converted a project (from VS2005), it works fine but....When I try and modify any of the forms none of the controls aer displayed on the form.Additionally I have noticed that each form has a formname.designer.vb file, the top few lines of the code in the designer.vb files are;

Then my controls are listed. Do I have to copy the code held in the seperate designer.vb file back to the 'formname.vb' file for all my forms?If so, why does VS2008 create all this extra work when converting forms from vs2005?
Controls Resizing Themselves In Designer On Build
Oct 18, 2011I have two controls inside a user control. They are set to be anchored left and right in order too size with the window as it changes size. For some reason I'm having tons of issues getting this to work properly.
Particularly, when ever I build the project and the control reloads itself, these controls triple in size, and extend way off the control. If I re size them and repeat the process it happens again! Anyone have this issue or know what might cause it?
IDE :: Missing Controls After Using Designer VB2008?
Nov 25, 2010What is happening is after dropping a few controls onto a new windows form. I have found that for no apparent reason some of the controls just go missing. As of this post i just dragged a group box with a half dozen labels buttons and textboxes off to the bottom of the designer. I went to move them back up and found that i had lost 2 labels and 2 textboxes! Doing a clean build gives no errors. Windows still thinks they are on the form.

When hover over sizing handles or form edge, cursor changes to double headed area but nothing moves. I can drag controls with mouse onto form. I successfully resized by pressing shift key and using keyboard arrow keys. I am using Toshiba Satellite L665D, Window 7 64x.

May 6, 2011I have a form-based application, that until recently displayed the controls on the form when in Design. For the last week or so, when I go to Design mode for the form, it is blank. However, the program does work correctly. And, I can see the control definitions in form.designer.vb. How can I get my form to display the controls again so I can add/move/change it going forward?

IDE :: VB2005 Controls Disappearing In Design Mode?
Oct 25, 2010I've been coding an application over the last few months in VB.NET 2005 and have noticed that as the application is growing in size, I'm beginning to experience some strange behaviour in the IDE.For example : I have a tabcontrol docked in a form with 5 tabs. Each tab has a panel docked to it with several buttons, text fields, layout tables, datagrids etc. Sometimes immediately after saving the project, one of the tabs will go "white" and show no controls at all. There might be the odd outline of a control ( like you get when a control is hidden behind another ) but the only way to get them back is to close the project and open it again. It seems to be getting worse as the number of controls dropped onto the forms increases. Looking in the form designer.vb file I see that there are currently around 8000 lines.Is it possible that the designer file is so large that its having trouble loading/refreshing the view in the IDE ?

When i build the application, the custom controls automatically change size and location. Anchoring and Dock properties are fine. Anchored to Top Left without dockstyle. Even if i fix the location and size in design mode, after i run the application the controls again change back to weird position.

Sep 27, 2007Every once in awhile when I double click on a form in design mode (Windows Forms Application) that contains a tab control, all of the controls on the tab control disappear. I have to reopen the form to get them all back. In addition to this, the column order of my columns on any datagrid inside a tab control get rearranged when this happens. Is this a known bug and if so is there a hot fix or patch?

Apr 20, 2010With several forms of mine, I occasionally run into the following issue: I edit the form using the designer (Visual Studio 2008, Windows Forms, .NET 2.0, VB.NET) to add components, only to find out later that some minor adjustments were made (e.g. the form's size is suddenly changed by a few pixels), and controls get deleted. This happens silently — event-handling methods automatically have their Handles suffix removed, too, so they never get called, and there's no compiler error. I only notice much later or not at all, because I'm working on a different area in the form.
As an example, I have a form with a SplitContainer containing an Infragistics UltraListView to the left, and an UltraTabControl to the right. I added a new tab, and controls within, and they worked fine. I later on found out that the list view's scrollbar was suddenly invisible, due to its size being off, and at least one control was removed from a different tab that I hadn't been working on.
Is this a known issue with the WinForms Designer, or with Infragistics? I use version control, of course, so I can compare the changes and merge the deleted code back in, but it's a tedious process that shouldn't be necessary. Are there ways to avoid this? Is there a good reason for this to occur?
One clue is that the control that was removed may have code (such as a Load event handler) that expects to be run in run time, not design time, and may be throwing an exception. Could this cause Visual Studio to remove the control?
Forms Designer - Controls Declared But Not Appearing On Form - Can't Even Rename
Jun 22, 2010I am desinging a form with mutiple controls on a tab page control and was moving controls between tab pages by cutting and pasting them. The forms designer obviously got confused at some stage and I now have controls that are declared in the designer.vb but do not appear anywhere on the form.
I can't even rename the controls that are there which have been given generic names to the names I want because they apparently already exist. I realise I could edit the designer.vb and remove the references to these controls but that seems fraught with danger?

Although I can correct this by editing the form.designer.vb file, everytime I make a change on the form the code is re-generated in the wrong order. Where does VS2008 store information about the order of the components for code generation.

Rebuild To Get The Designer Updated On Debug, With Custom Controls In Form?
Aug 10, 2011At the moment, I'm writing tons of custom control, which all fits my needs. But the thing is, each time I Debug the project, it doesn't update the form designer at all, not even the code. My solution to this is to Rebuild the project, which can take time. This is very frustrating.
I'm using Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate to compile.
Controls Keep Moving Down On A Winform Panel After Running (in Debug Mode)?
Aug 8, 2011I have a winform with a main panel that is anchored top, left; dock: fill, and set to a specific size to contain another panel of content that we want to scroll through. The other panel along with a few other controls are on the main panel. Now, for some reason, after running the application the controls will be shifted down (never horizontally) some random amount. Now, the "random amount" may in fact be the last position of the scroll bar or something, but either way, it is unintended functionality. I have resorted to automatically resetting the locations of these controls on the main form in the constructor?

The user needs to insert information and close the form. Sometimes the user is not near his machine so whenever there is a new mail I am adding new controls and modify the child size.

May 9, 2012I want to be able to control several groups of settings independently of each other. I'd originally used My.Settings, but it was too much work to manually rollback some settings whilst saving others.
I thought my solution was to use multiple settings files, and I've had moments where this seemed to work, but I whatever success I have had is periodic and temporary.
Currently I have two settings files in the root of the project; In code, I can access the settings OK, but in many cases I want to bind individual settings to controls. This should be straight-forward, and I recall it working when I used the single, built-in settings file.
However, when I use the two new settings files it doesn't work. In the Formatting & Advanced Binding dialog, I select Add New Project Data Source, I browse into my project, then into the root namespace, and then I see my forms/classes/settings files. When I select the two settings files, and click OK, the dialog is dismissed without me being able to select an individual setting to bind the control to.
When I enable Project > Show All Files, I can see that the binding has been created; I have two .datasource files under My Project > Datasources.
Is there some reason why I shouldn't be able to bind to these settings files? If not, why can I not access them the the data-binding dialogs?
Plan B is to create an object to act as an intermediary between the controls and the settings files, but I'd rather avoid this if I can.
Binding Form Controls To XML Datasource?
May 19, 2010I have a form that with a list of text boxes. My target is simply binding these controls to an XML file so that whenever the file contents are changed externally, the text box values change dynamically. I will have an external application edit the XML file and overwrite the existing one.
