Binding Controls To A Settings File?

May 9, 2012

I want to be able to control several groups of settings independently of each other. I'd originally used My.Settings, but it was too much work to manually rollback some settings whilst saving others.

I thought my solution was to use multiple settings files, and I've had moments where this seemed to work, but I whatever success I have had is periodic and temporary.

Currently I have two settings files in the root of the project; In code, I can access the settings OK, but in many cases I want to bind individual settings to controls. This should be straight-forward, and I recall it working when I used the single, built-in settings file.

However, when I use the two new settings files it doesn't work. In the Formatting & Advanced Binding dialog, I select Add New Project Data Source, I browse into my project, then into the root namespace, and then I see my forms/classes/settings files. When I select the two settings files, and click OK, the dialog is dismissed without me being able to select an individual setting to bind the control to.

When I enable Project > Show All Files, I can see that the binding has been created; I have two .datasource files under My Project > Datasources.

Is there some reason why I shouldn't be able to bind to these settings files? If not, why can I not access them the the data-binding dialogs?

Plan B is to create an object to act as an intermediary between the controls and the settings files, but I'd rather avoid this if I can.

C# - Binding Controls To Class Properties?

Mar 20, 2009

I have yet to find a "nice" way to do two way databinding in .Net. The one thing I don't like for example in the present asp.net two way databinding is doing the binding in the aspx page is no compile time checking, ie:

<asp:TextBox ID="TitleTextBox"
runat="server" Text='<%# Bind("Title_oops_spelled_wrong") %>'>

I would like to have something like this:

Class Binder
Public Sub BindControl(ctl As Control, objectProperty As ???????)
'// Add ctl and objectProperty to a collection
End Sub

What I don't know is possible is, how to receive the objectProperty in my example; I want to receive a reference (ie: a pointer) to the property, so later, via this reference, I can either read from or write to the property.

Can this somehow be done with delegates perhaps??

UPDATE: Note, I want to add the control reference to a binding collection, this collection would then be used for binding and unbinding.

Is this all I need? And if so, why are my user.configs empty?

I have tried to set up an addhandler for the BindingNavigatorMoveLastcontrol, and although I can get the BindingNavigatorMoveLastcontrol to display my messagebox

Using Data Binding Controls To Add Records To DataSet

I need to add rows to a DataSet using databound controls in VB.net. I've set up the data bindings themselves, they're bound the the correct controls, and the BindingSource uses the correct DataSet. The DataSet is filled from the DataAdapter correctly, and the binding source works, as the navigation controls all work fine. How do I use the controls to add new data to the DataSet? I guess there must be some kind of end-edit involved which would enable me to insert, update and delete records in the DataSet (as you would use with DataGridViews)

Output Propagates Across Multiple Controls When Using The Same Binding Source

Aug 16, 2011

I have SQLdb column elements from one table that are selected from another table. This is achieved through the use of binding a combobox to the selectable entries and applying that entries ID to the initiating table column When I add multiple combo boxes, for multiple columns, the data selected propagates across all the combo boxes I have. They all use the same binding source. It seems to me the only way out of this is to create a bunch of binding sources, essentially one for each control. I have tested this and it appears to work, but is there another, less cluttered way of ensuring that the comboboxes, while bound to the same binding source, are not bound to one another?

Toggling Controls Settings & Values?

Sep 18, 2009

I have a series of check boxes and text boxes that are paired up together. 3 check boxes and three text boxes. Right now I have code in each of the Check boxes changed event as follows:

If UseSuffix_CheckBox.Checked = True Then
SuffixValue_TextBox.Enabled = True
SuffixValue_Label.Enabled = True

[Code]....

What I would like is to have one public routine (Function or Sub) that gets handed in the the control name/ref that just got clicked and then perform the functions listed in the above statement. Basically I want to have one routine that all the check box changed event points and acts on that check box and its paired text boxes and labels. I know it can be done just not sure how to pass the control that was clicked by the user to the sub.

VS 2008 - My.Settings File - Specify The Location For User.config File

Jan 3, 2010

I'm looking for a way to specify the location for the User.config file that is used for storing the My.Settings object. It appears that this is not possible. The problem for me is, I don't want to be responsible for creating several different files on the users computer that really have no use and are difficult to find and clean once an update is released. For most users, this is not a serious problem, as many will probably never update the software, and most will probably only go through a couple of updates. On my system, there are config files for every build of the application, and the same to a lesser extent will be true for my beta testers.

I can understand that MS wants to make sure that no two applications will use the same location for storing application data, but a simple [UserData] [CompanyName][ApplicationName] for storing application data will probably suffice for 99.9999 percent of the legitimate applications in the world. Bogging a user's system down with erroneous files, no matter how small, is an unnecessary drain on system resources and a potential source of problems for the user. It's bad enough that most programs leave bits and pieces of themselves all over a user's system after De-installation - this to me seems only to exaggerate this problem.

Is the only way to get around this problem to write a whole new Settings Class? Is there a way to change the location of the UserConfig file to a more friendly (and more predictable) location that I am not finding for myself? It would seem that having at least the OPTION to specify a location for the User.Config file would be OBVIOUS and easy to implement, so why did they leave this out?

Create Log File To Track Progress And Populate Controls Via Text File Or XML File?

May 22, 2009

I am trying to create a log file which I am going to use to populate some controls (DataGridView or Treeview). I am trying to figure out if should use text files or XML files to do so. Effectively the log will highlight multiple phases in a client-side app. The log will be written to at various phases when the project is running. The user will always have the options move on to the next phase or save progress and exit the project. As such, I want the log file to highlight how far the user has progressed throught the various phases AND I want the log to highlight varous information from each phase. Whenever the user starts the project, they will be given the option to load existing log files. So the project will have to read these log files and append them where necessary as the user progresses.

I am not sure what the best way to do this is and below is a rudimentary approach using text files. As you can see, the top of the file would have a summary of all the phases and whether or not the user completed each phase. Next each phase would have a data section highlighting what data was stored along the way. I have used a ":" to denote each section. Then within each section I would obviously need to use a delimeter for all my data. So if Phase1 = True, then I would load all the pertinent data from "Phase1:" into the desired control. Can anyone provide an efficient way of doing this and provide some insight as to whether I should use XML instead. The phases my change during development and I am not sure yet which controls I will be using. Does XML provide more flexibility.

In summary I am looking to create, read/write and append log files and populate controls with the data in varous sections of the log file. Example:

Phase1 = True
Phase2 = True
Phase3 = False
Phase4 = False
