When I create an inherited form, after creation for some reason I cant see the form to edit in designer, I mean I cant drag and drop buttons, labels or any control to it since I just CANT see it, I have included a pic of what I see below where Form1 is the Inherited Form. What Am I doing wrong or what is happening

I have a base form and I inherit other forms from it. However, if i go back and change say the size of the base form, I don't see those changes take effect in my inherited forms. Does anyone know why that is? Is there a solution to this issue?So as far as design is goes, what exactly gets inherited by other forms?

Now when I inherit the BaseForm on a new form, the HappyTime property displays in the properties window as false, and is uneditable.
I've recreated this BaseForm and Inheriting Form in an entirely new soloution and, the HappyTime property is editable and works as expected. For some reason in the existing project (where these changes need to be made) it's not behaving properly.
Environment Information: .Net Framework 3.5, Visual Studio 2010, Win7 x64
I have a class which inherits a form class, and just recently it's started acting strange. All of the controls on the form are locked, and I don't understand why. I can't edit the properties of any controls, or anything.
View 4 RepliesIf for any reason I close the designer view of a window and then save the project, i can never see the designer view again. other forms that I have not closed the design view can be seen. When I run the project, everything looks fine, I am just not allowed to change the visual.
View 10 RepliesYesterday I installed vs2008, installed SP1 all seems well.I have converted a project (from VS2005), it works fine but....When I try and modify any of the forms none of the controls aer displayed on the form.Additionally I have noticed that each form has a formname.designer.vb file, the top few lines of the code in the designer.vb files are;

Then my controls are listed. Do I have to copy the code held in the seperate designer.vb file back to the 'formname.vb' file for all my forms?If so, why does VS2008 create all this extra work when converting forms from vs2005?
I have a very simple setup, single mycontrol.ascx with assoicated mycontrol.ascx.designer.vb and mycontrol.ascx.vb file.
mycontrol.ascx embeds a single reference to a custom control: "MyMenu":
<mM:myMenu id="myMenu1" runat="server" />
This has created a protected reference in the mycontrol.ascx.designer.vb file:
Protected WithEvents myMenu1 As Global.CustomControls.MyMenu
Now, when I breakpoint the Page_Load() event of mycontrol.ascx, and inspect the members returned from the type via:
Me.GetType().GetMembers()
I cannot any reference to myMenu1. If I look at the control with intellisence, the property is accessible:
Me.myMenu1
what I'm missing and what I need to do to access designer created properties at runtime through reflection?
I have setup some base forms with some bottons on it The buttons are situated in a panel.Both the panel and the buttons modifer properties have been set up as "Friend".The problem I have is when I inherit these base forms, the buttons seem to jump around by themselves allot

View 9 RepliesI have a form called BaseReportForm that handles drawing some stuff to in a panel to create a template for a bunch of reports. The drawing all takes place in the Panel's Paint event and this form will always be inherited. In the inherited forms, I draw the specific details of the report in the inherited form's Panel Paint event. So I am drawing to the same panel from the base form and from the inherited form. It all works fine, but when I try to open the design view for the inherited forms, I get the following error..

I'm not sure I am handling my paint events correctly. Is there a different way I should be handling the drawing of these reports?
If I have a large number of classes, each similar to the other in certain aspects (they all share a common base class, but each does things differently), and I need to create Windows forms for each to allow easy changing of their values through a GUI? Create one matching form for each object in VS' forms designer, Or Use code to create the forms dynamically at runtime.
#2 makes the most sense to me, because a lot of these objects will share very common features of the form, notably "Ok" and "Cancel" buttons. But one object might need to draw a textbox on the form while another might need to draw a combobox. Not to mention, if I want to put icons on the "Ok" and "Cancel" buttons, I'd have to do this for each copy of the form in designer, and that sounds like it could get out of hand quickly.But is drawing forms through code sane? VS' forms designer is pretty sophisticated and designed to make life easier. Am I wise to consider ignoring its functionality and diving into the trench warfare of forms design through code? Or are there examples of automating form creation based on an existing object's properties?
Visual Studio 2010 Windows Applications Visual Basic-- not able to resize or move controls or form with my mouse in designer window. When hover over sizing handles or form edge, cursor changes to double headed area but nothing moves. I can drag controls with mouse onto form. I successfully resized by pressing shift key and using keyboard arrow keys. I am using Toshiba Satellite L665D, Window 7 64x.
View 3 RepliesWe've recently upgraded from VS2008 to VS2010. The conversion of our vb.net Windows Forms app went well, but we're now having big problems with the forms designer.retty much any change to the layout of a form (sometimes just a solution rebuild) will work once, but on recompile, the IDE designer refuses to display the form, the error message being a null-reference exception (with no details as to what).Closing and restarting VS2010 will cure it, but only for one compile cycle - and it's obviously not practical to close and reopen every time. Closing and reopening the form does not fix it.

I know how to dock a component using the windows forms designer as well as through code but I am having a problem with one thing. I am trying to dock a richtextbox on a panel through code but it seems to be filling up all of the space instead of just the panel. When I put it on the form and dock it works fine. The code I am using is:

With several forms of mine, I occasionally run into the following issue: I edit the form using the designer (Visual Studio 2008, Windows Forms, .NET 2.0, VB.NET) to add components, only to find out later that some minor adjustments were made (e.g. the form's size is suddenly changed by a few pixels), and controls get deleted. This happens silently — event-handling methods automatically have their Handles suffix removed, too, so they never get called, and there's no compiler error. I only notice much later or not at all, because I'm working on a different area in the form.
As an example, I have a form with a SplitContainer containing an Infragistics UltraListView to the left, and an UltraTabControl to the right. I added a new tab, and controls within, and they worked fine. I later on found out that the list view's scrollbar was suddenly invisible, due to its size being off, and at least one control was removed from a different tab that I hadn't been working on.
Is this a known issue with the WinForms Designer, or with Infragistics? I use version control, of course, so I can compare the changes and merge the deleted code back in, but it's a tedious process that shouldn't be necessary. Are there ways to avoid this? Is there a good reason for this to occur?
One clue is that the control that was removed may have code (such as a Load event handler) that expects to be run in run time, not design time, and may be throwing an exception. Could this cause Visual Studio to remove the control?

It works, I click the little arrow, the context menu appears:I click the menu item, the event is fired, the control is docked:but the menu description is not updated or refreshed (it should show "Undock from parent container"). Then if I click outside the control to deselect it and then I click back on the arrow to show the menu, the right menu item is displayed:How do I refresh the menu items?
I am desinging a form with mutiple controls on a tab page control and was moving controls between tab pages by cutting and pasting them. The forms designer obviously got confused at some stage and I now have controls that are declared in the designer.vb but do not appear anywhere on the form.
I can't even rename the controls that are there which have been given generic names to the names I want because they apparently already exist. I realise I could edit the designer.vb and remove the references to these controls but that seems fraught with danger?
I am using the following code in the 'Application.Designer.vb' to set one of the two forms as the the mainform for my splash screen.The global string array gSetupStr(0,1) only produces a correct result when any Msgbox is inserted before the 'If' statement.However,I do not want the Msgbox during a splash screen, but do want to control the mainform. View 1 RepliesIn a windows forms class in Visual Basic 2008, there are several horizontal lines created with the lineshape control dragged from the toolbox. A very strange thing is happening with the horizontal lines. In the forms designer, all of the the lines (both horizontal and vertical) look fine, but when the program is executed (in debug mode), about 3 seconds after painting the screen nicely, I get echos of portions of the horizontal lines about 50px or so above my horizontal lines. View 17 RepliesI have built an application where there is a MDI parent form and other forms which i have not declared as Child forms but have set these forms not to show in Taskbar. While the application is running, if i have any of these forms open and i switch over to any other application other than this and when i come back to it, all these forms hide. I cannot reopen it or see it anymore.. Why is this happening?? how can i sustain these forms as it is even when i leave the application.LuxCoder
View 9 RepliesI have added a MDI parent to my application and assigned all new forms to it (i.e. Form1.MDIparent = myMDI). When i hide and then show a form, it loses all of the data previously typed in the textboxes.
View 3 RepliesWhen I develop a Windows Forms app in Visual Studio using C#, every control that I add to my form is by default marked as private, which is what I want.
When using VB.NET, every control is by default marked as Friend (the equivalent of internal in C#), which is not what I want.
Can I just change this default? It seems like surely it's a setting somewhere.
I have cooked up my first iteration of a code generator which creates the basic Entity models from a SQL Database Schema. Currently, It will scan a SQL Db Schema, and create .vb code files complete with private members and Public property declarations for every User table in the Database. My next step is having it add the basic CRUD procedures as well. Are we mere mortals able to access whatever technology allows the Partial class files created by vs to be hidden/Linked to their "parent" files, such as the Partial Class files for Windows forms or any other designer-generated control? My thinking is that it would be handy to be able to re-generate code files from the database if necessary to reflect changes in the schema, without overwriting any other properties or methods added to a class in addition to those derived from the database. SO I am hoing I can have the Auto-generated output go to a Partial Class file, and then use a regular class file of the same name for the rest of the code. My Concern is the multiplicity of files that might result, so I was hoping it is possible to "tuck them in" to the parent code file in the Class View.

I'm needing to do is to show in my messagebox.show the date from the sql query that I ran before this. I know that I havent declared a variable in that statement but I'm having a bit of a lapse today and was just wondering how to show that result in my messagebox.show.
When my login screen loads, if the user has not created an account the form will close and a form to create an account will appear. However when I code this both forms stay visible, instead of just the one. Where am I going wrong?[code...]

1. Show anothor form (ie. Form2)
2. Close Form1.
At present when I use the me.form1 , but both Form1 and Form2 both closes.I would like to press a button or on a timer, to show Form2, while closing Form1.
my scenario is this: I have two forms and a module. Let's call one of the forms MainForm and the other SecondForm. My module is running on a seperate thread to MainForm. A sub routine is triggered in the module, and I want it to display SecondForm.
I understand that I cannot do this directly because SecondForm needs to be called from the UI thread, which is shared by MainForm. How would I go about doing this? I'm guessing that I would have to use a combination of invocation and calls to MainForm to activate SecondForm.
