If I have a large number of classes, each similar to the other in certain aspects (they all share a common base class, but each does things differently), and I need to create Windows forms for each to allow easy changing of their values through a GUI? Create one matching form for each object in VS' forms designer, Or Use code to create the forms dynamically at runtime.
#2 makes the most sense to me, because a lot of these objects will share very common features of the form, notably "Ok" and "Cancel" buttons. But one object might need to draw a textbox on the form while another might need to draw a combobox. Not to mention, if I want to put icons on the "Ok" and "Cancel" buttons, I'd have to do this for each copy of the form in designer, and that sounds like it could get out of hand quickly.But is drawing forms through code sane? VS' forms designer is pretty sophisticated and designed to make life easier. Am I wise to consider ignoring its functionality and diving into the trench warfare of forms design through code? Or are there examples of automating form creation based on an existing object's properties?

Okay normally this was easy to do, but now with IE9 Visual Studio 2010 hangs and crashes. The problem seems to be even worse because you can't build an Interop.mshtml.dll to match version 9. I've tried using the VS command prompt with no luck. Allegedly this is how it is done, but there are no known examples that actually work. If anyone has done this with success

I am trying to add a reference to Microsoft.SQLServer.ManagedDTS.dll which is required to run a DTS/SSIS package from VB.NET. However the dll does not show in my add reference listing so when I select BROWSE and select the actual DLL I get a rather long error message telling me that only 'dll' and COM components can be referenced.
The exact message is: A reference to 'C:Programs FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90SDKAssembliesMicrosoft.SQLServer.ManagedDTS.dll' could not be added. This is not a valid assembly or COM component. When hover over sizing handles or form edge, cursor changes to double headed area but nothing moves. I can drag controls with mouse onto form. I successfully resized by pressing shift key and using keyboard arrow keys. I am using Toshiba Satellite L665D, Window 7 64x.

The conversion of our vb.net Windows Forms app went well, but we're now having big problems with the forms designer.retty much any change to the layout of a form (sometimes just a solution rebuild) will work once, but on recompile, the IDE designer refuses to display the form, the error message being a null-reference exception (with no details as to what).Closing and restarting VS2010 will cure it, but only for one compile cycle - and it's obviously not practical to close and reopen every time. Closing and reopening the form does not fix it.
View 3 RepliesI am trying to use my .NET DLL library that is compiled in VIsual Studio 2008 in Linux. Now for that they have this Mono CLI implementation but unfotunately they have not fully implemented Microsoft.VisualBasic library as of yet. So when i try to call certain methods from my DLL i get this error: "Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.VisualBasic, Version=8.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a' or one of its dependencies.".
But not every function in my DLL crashes with this error. I found out that it is because this error only occurs when i use VisualBasic functionality. But the problem is that many things that come from this library are default things that you can do when using VB .NET.
Is there any way i can completely remove VIsualBasic functionality from my code in my DLL library?
I read in another post that setting Option Strict On is a good place to start but i still get the error even after doing that. Additionaly, i have unchecked VisualBasic namespace and removed it from references.

I'm attempting to create and populate a table in a new Microsoft Access (Jet) database using VB.Net 2008 Express under Windows XP Pro SP3. The database and table are being created properly, but loading the table proceeds VERY slowly. When I am loading the table, no complicating factors that might impact performance, such as indexes or table relationships have been defined. The table to be loaded is made up of relatively short rows consisting of three single byte columns, and one (four byte) integer column. I am loading approximately 16 million rows, and this is literally taking hours, while the same data can be interactively imported into Microsoft Access from a .csv file in minutes. I am trying to batch load the rows, 64K rows at a time, in order to avoid the overhead of individually transacting/committing each row individually, but suspect that I must not be doing something right. I have Visual Studio 2010 and a VB Project that had a reference to Microsoft.Interop.Excel 12.0. Well recently I changed the reference version to 14.0. That was actually a mistake and now I need to bump it back down to version 12.0. However I get this error in my project now...

I tried removing references and adding the com object to, but no avail.
With several forms of mine, I occasionally run into the following issue: I edit the form using the designer (Visual Studio 2008, Windows Forms, .NET 2.0, VB.NET) to add components, only to find out later that some minor adjustments were made (e.g. the form's size is suddenly changed by a few pixels), and controls get deleted. This happens silently — event-handling methods automatically have their Handles suffix removed, too, so they never get called, and there's no compiler error. I only notice much later or not at all, because I'm working on a different area in the form.
As an example, I have a form with a SplitContainer containing an Infragistics UltraListView to the left, and an UltraTabControl to the right. I added a new tab, and controls within, and they worked fine. I later on found out that the list view's scrollbar was suddenly invisible, due to its size being off, and at least one control was removed from a different tab that I hadn't been working on.
Is this a known issue with the WinForms Designer, or with Infragistics? I use version control, of course, so I can compare the changes and merge the deleted code back in, but it's a tedious process that shouldn't be necessary. Are there ways to avoid this? Is there a good reason for this to occur?
One clue is that the control that was removed may have code (such as a Load event handler) that expects to be run in run time, not design time, and may be throwing an exception. Could this cause Visual Studio to remove the control?

It works, I click the little arrow, the context menu appears:I click the menu item, the event is fired, the control is docked:but the menu description is not updated or refreshed (it should show "Undock from parent container"). I am desinging a form with mutiple controls on a tab page control and was moving controls between tab pages by cutting and pasting them. The forms designer obviously got confused at some stage and I now have controls that are declared in the designer.vb but do not appear anywhere on the form.
I can't even rename the controls that are there which have been given generic names to the names I want because they apparently already exist. I realise I could edit the designer.vb and remove the references to these controls but that seems fraught with danger?

View 1 RepliesIn a windows forms class in Visual Basic 2008, there are several horizontal lines created with the lineshape control dragged from the toolbox. A very strange thing is happening with the horizontal lines. In the forms designer, all of the the lines (both horizontal and vertical) look fine, but when the program is executed (in debug mode), about 3 seconds after painting the screen nicely, I get echos of portions of the horizontal lines about 50px or so above my horizontal lines.
