I am currently using the registry to get file descriptions for files. As an example, so that a DOCX file will return the description "Microsoft Word". I am doing this from the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT registry key.However, registry access is extremely slow, and I need to do several thousands of these. Is there an alternative way to do this?

View 19 RepliesI have searched a lot regarding my problem but no solution so i am posting here to get advise from the experts.I am making a windows form application , and using Sql compact database.My Problem :When i am inserting records in the database using code (run time) they are inserted deleted , update and i can see them updated,inserted,deleted in my application , but when i close the application and start again only a few times they are changed, once a million :). Else i again see blank database ,or if i directly put values in the database from the solution explorer Visual studio 2010 , they stay there forever. I am using simple update,insert ,delete statement but not sure why the changes made to database disappear when i close the application.

What is the best way to resize & move a form using just VB commands? I have a form that I need to set the Height and Top props, problem is that takes two calls and there is a noticable flicker. I tried using SuspendLayout/ResumeLayout, DoubleBuffered, swaping the top and height calls around, etc, but nothing seems to help. The test forms only have one small listview and one or two buttons. Usually I use the synchronizationcontext to run methods on my GUI thread from a background thread. But now I need to do it the other way around and the synchronizationcontext class doesn't work on threads that don't have a GUI. What I basically need to do is, if there is anything going on on the thread I want to run my method on, I want to pause or interrupt it and run my method and then let it continue.

I am working on a project, but the latest enhancement to it has me stumped currently. Here is what the class enhancement asks for:
Modify class time to provide a Tick method that increments the time by one second. Also provide methods IncrementMinute to increment the minute and methods IncrementHour to increment the Hour. The Trick method, the IncrementMinute method and the IncrementHour method should be called when you click the Add 1 to Second button, the Add 1 to Minute button and the Add 1 to Hour button, respectively. Be sure to test the following cases:
A) Incrementing into the next minute.
B) Incrementing into the next hour.
C) Incrementing into the next day (that is, 11:59:59 PM to 12:00:00 AM).

The reason I am confused is currently my program already increments the seconds, minutes, and hours correctly (as shown in pic) for Cases A, B, C. But, I haven't added a Tick method which is what the enhancement to the class Time calls for. Here are the 2 classes I have so far:Time Class that the Tick method is supposed to be added to

I've created an app (VB.NET) where each installation of the app works with a single local database on the PC. No multiuser and no ability for the user to change databases - the database is effectively part of the app, with a fixed scema, only the data will change.At the moment the database is SQL CE. It has about 30 tables with some simple relationships between the tables.
I'm wondering if there is an alternative to SQL CE that might be faster in this scenario. Although SQL CE is excellent and easy to use, I get the feeling there is perhaps an unecessary overhead when using it for something simple - and it does seem a little slow when my app is doing complex stuff that interacts a lot with the DB. In my prototype I actually loaded the 'database' tables from text files into Arrays and developed subs and functions to perform the database searches etc. It was blindingly fast but I realised it wasn't a scaleable solution because it was an 'in-memory' database. A compromise would be to 'page' data into array when needed, but it all gets horribly complex and that's probably why some very clver people have created SQL CE !
