I'm getting a design time NullReferenceException on Dim db As Database = DatabaseFactory.CreateDatabase()and I can't figure out what to do about it. Has anyone experienced this problem or know the solution?

In my shop we currently develop what I would consider small to medium sized projects. We have been investigating the Enterprise Library and how it may be able to help us in development.I have particularly been looking at the Logging block and comparing it with Log4Net.It seems to me that the Enterprise Library blocks would be an extremely over-engineered solution for something like simple application logging. That being said. Are you using the Enterprise Library and on what size projects? What are your thoughts on the Enterprise Library as a whole?

I just got finished watching a short video on logging using some of the built in concepts in Visual Studio 2005. This seems to do a good job. My question is why do people look for other solutions to logging such as Enterprise Library or Log4Net when there is a simple solution out of the box?
The video I watched primarily used the following for logging.
Code: My.Application.Log.WriteEntry(sb.ToString, type)

I'm trying to use the Enterprise Library RangeValidator attribute to validate that a decimal value is greater than zero:
<RangeValidator(GetType(Decimal), "0.00", RangeBoundaryType.Exclusive, "1", RangeBoundaryType.Ignore, "MyMessage", "", Nothing, False, "", "")> _
Public Property Holding() As Decimal
[Code]....
As far as I can see I am using the overload correctly. It works fine if I remove the messageTemplate related parameters but I want to be able to specify a custom message.

I need this to sign the assemblies to add them to the GAC.
Does anybody know where I can find it?

coming from this question i was wondering why:
[Code]....
'this throws an "Object reference not set to an instance of an object"-Exception'
[Code]....
A CType(obj, Boolean) would evaluate to False(just as CBool(obj)), i think because the compiler uses a helper function, but that is not my theme. Why does casting Nothing to Boolean evaluates to False, whereas casting an object that is Nothing to Boolean throws an Nullreference-Exception? Does that make sense?

I keep Getting a NullReferenceException Error but I have declared a NEW structure. See below:
Structure ISACReply
Public RTD As ArrayList
Public SAC As ArrayList
Public DRT As ArrayList
[code]....
When I try to execute the subroutine "calltest" I get a NullReferenceException in the line that says " rv.DRT.Add("HELLO") " even though I have set rv to an instance of ISACReply using NEW.

we are using the Enterprise Library data access application block in our data layer for an application. We must be doing something wrong though because we cannot seem to get encryption and the ability to reconfigure connection strings working well. For example, when the application starts, it checks if the connection strings are "Protected", and if they are not, we encrypt them using the following function:
[Code]...
Then comes another issue. If a user installs an update for the application, the first time it runs, nothing can connect if the config file was previously encrypted. A restart of the application (second time running) will fix the issue. with all of the battles we are fighting here, I wanted to ask if we are doing this right? How should we be encrypting and allowing updates. If you need to see the exceptions thrown, I can provide those upon request (will need to change some code to get them again, but it is doable).

Our app allows admins to connect to a different database, which means we need to temporarily decrypt the app.config's connection strings, re-write them, then re-encrypt it. Here's my current 'simplified' code showing how we do all 3 tasks:
Dim config As Configuration = ConfigurationManager.OpenExeConfiguration(ConfigurationUserLevel.None)
Dim section As ConfigurationSection = config.GetSection("connectionStrings")

I had a working program a while ago, but now it is giving me an error when I try to insert some data to my Excel-file.I get this error: Old format or invalid type library. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80028018 (TYPE_E_INVDATAREAD)) For example, one of my Excel referencing codes is:
Dim XL_App As New Excel.Application
Dim XL_WB As Excel.Workbook = XL_App.Workbooks.Open("C:Program FilesIAAExcelitTuntilappu.xls", , True)
Dim XL_WS1 As Excel.Worksheet = XL_WB.Worksheets(1)
The above code used to work, but now it gives me the error...I recently updated my Office from 2003 to 2010. How can I fix it?

If I create a DLL using VB 2010 express can it be used by previous versions of of .Net (3.5, 2.0)? Will the DLL use .Net 4.0 components, which is what I want. I don't see a way to force that to be the case.

I have a function that gets a string passed to it.When testing the function, I'm getting a null reference exception on the string parameter that gets passed to it, even though the string is not null, I don't understand why I'm getting this error.I used a dummy value to verify both the string parameter in the SelectSingleNode function and the newValue string parameter being passed to my function and they both contain values, so I don't understand why it's throwing a null reference exception. Just for clarity, the purpose of the function is to write values back to the nodes of an XML file.[code]

I'm building a simple game in an ASP.NET/VB.NET web app. The game has a UI made up of several ImageButtons. The web page's code behind file holds an instance to the game object which will manage each turn taken by players. Everything worked when the Game object's methods were Shared. The problem occurred after refactoring to make the game object work as an instance instead of a shared class. Now, when the action returns to the code behind, the instance of the game object is nothing.
The code bits:
Public Class _Default
Inherits System.Web.UI.Page
Private _gamePanel As Panel

It is possible to catch an exception and throw a new exception which wraps the first exception as an inner exception: [URL] Also, if I call a function and it throws a certain error, but I catch it, will the calling code's catch handler execute? If so, and it is of a higher exception type, is this not wrapping the exception? eg I can throw exception ex of type IndexOutOfRange, log it but rethrow, catch a higher up exception and do something, or I can throw a new exception and wrap an inner exception like:

I just converted a project from 2008 to 2010. I didn't encounter any errors in the conversion.I tried to add HTML Imports System.Threading.Tasks. This gives the "...doesn't contain any public member..." warning and naturally, the .Tasks library is not recognized. Is there any trick to the conversion, setting in the properties, etc. that I need to deal with?Note that I have a "from scratch" project that accesses the System.Threading.Tasks class with no problem. Both projects are contained in the same Projects folder as in:
Projects/ProjectThatWorks
Projects/ProjectThatDoesn'tWork
