View 1 RepliesWe recently started playing with a vb.net 2008 WebClient on a Windows 7/64 workstation to download files from a web site to the local machine.It works except that we cannot detect if the URL is invalid. It doesn't throw an error. If we use Async it does trigger the Download Complete event but there was no file since the URL was incorrect.Is there a way to detect an incorrect URL?I also noticed that the events does not give you either the URL or the file?

View 2 RepliesI've been trying for a while to use a method I've found on the net to login to a webpage then download zip files off the page.Here is what I am doing:

I have a desktop application from where i want to download files from the web server. when i am downloading a single file then there is no problem. but when i want to download more than one file there is an error like "WebClient does not support concurrent I/O operations".
View 6 RepliesDim wc As New System.Net.WebClientGamerTag.Replace(" ", "+")wc.Credentials = New System.Net.NetworkCredential(Email, Password, "http://live.xbox.com/en-US/profile/profile.aspx?GamerTag=" & GamerTag)Dim fx As New System.IO.StreamReader(wc.OpenRead("http://live.xbox.com/en-US/profile/profile.aspx?GamerTag=Dark Slipstream" & GamerTag))Dim str As String = fx.ReadToEndfx.Close()
The above code will open a webclient, set the credentials (possible error?), create a stream of the entire page, and then load it into a string (str).I then scan through and look for what is needed (Gamerscore, Motto, Bio, etc)-in this case.This doesn't work however, it doesn't sign in.
I have a weird bug with webclient. I made an app a while ago which uses webclient to download a small thumbnail image.. and I rememeber when I first made it, the first time webclient was used to download the image it always took 15 sec+ to download it, but after the first it always downloaded quickly (in like 1 sec) .. but then the problem went away for me and it always downloaded fine.but now someone else who uses my app is having the slow image download problem apparently around 50% of the time it downloads the thumbnail images. so does anyone know what might be causing this? As I said, I don't have the problem any more on my comp - but I don't know why :s
View 5 RepliesI'm trying to use a java servlet in a 3rd party tool's web interface (CA service desk) to invoke it's download file functionality using a webclient in vb.net. The trouble is the text stream from response is markup and not the acutual text file stream.
It's like the page is redirecting to another page which actually presents the file for downloading. I have no idea what the redirected page URL is.
Is there a way I can process this redirected page in order to get at the download using a system.net.webclient?

View 1 RepliesI'm trying to code a program that can download multiple files at once (on different threads of course).I have created a custom listview component that will allow me to add a progressbar directly to it.What my real question is, how can i take a url given by the user from an input box and create a new webclient to handle the download asynchronously and also report the progress without disturbing all of the other downloads in progress?

But in the case of WebClient class, How do I do this ?As I have been told this is so much faster.
I do the same thing with URLdownloadtoFile: IT WORKS.Wih the WEBCLIENT part I just DO NOT GET the Text file from the PHP/MYSQL server: I only get message "Invalid Username/Password or no list download permission: ||"

I have an app that will sign me up for about 20 websites at once and each one requires a captcha to prove your human (which is cool I don't mind typing them in). I have a form 2 that is going to pop up with all the captchas viewed in picture boxes with textboxes for me to enter my text and submit buttons to enter the captcha to the website.The only issue that I am having is getting the captcha to view in the picture box. It refreshes everytime I get it to showup.I had it working previously but my hard drive crashed and I lost the code and the app.From what I was able to put together previously I was able to grab the element by type and if the src had [URL] then to put the source into the picture box.I tried to rework it all day yesterday and I just keep getting the code refreshing.
Here the code.
Private Sub Form1_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
WebBrowser1.Navigate("https://secure.diigo.com/sign-up?referInfo=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.diigo.com") 'Website that has the ReCaptcha

I make a lot of programs that require an internet connection to download things from the web.At the very beginning, I used WebClient, as I didn't know Socket & how it worked.But now, I use Socket all the time, altough it's more lines of code. It seems to work faster then WebClient.I am interested if this is really true & why WebClient is slower (so is HttpWebRequest) then just a Socket.I've setup 2 threads which starts on the click of a button (WebClient thread starts first), the Socket beats the WebClient by just some milliseconds, but still.Each way has it's advantages & disadvantages, e.g.: if you use Socket, you need to write the header yourself & parse the response header.My question is, which one do you prefer & why ?Do you know why WebClient & HttpWebRequest are slower then Socket, as I assume, WebClient & HttpWebRequest both use tcp to download the things.
View 2 RepliesI'm using the WebClient class' OpenWriteAsync function, and I'm having a little trouble with it. I want it to write some information to a .txt file I have uploaded on my FTP. working in an intranet sit .downloadString took less than one second,but some times the server is down (maitenance or so on) and the the result took maybe one minute or so.Is there any way to set an lower interval?for example, if the server doesn't respond in 9 seconds return empty string, or so on.
I've read some about async comm but not sure what is the best solution.
I am trying to get my program to read async so it doesn't just freeze up while it fetches the data. I have:
SR = New StreamReader(WC.OpenReadAsync(New Uri(url)))
Dim html = SR.ReadToEnd.ToString
It keeps throwing the error "does not produce an expression". I remember trying this in the past, only to have the same error.
I'm trying to download a simple text file from a web server. It's easily accessible from the web browser and I can download it from the web browser. However, whenever I use a WebClient to download the file, I get a 403 Access Forbidden Error! I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do. I haven't come across this kind of error in programming before and I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do to get around it.

But when I use WebClient.DownloadString to read the source code to a textbox, I only get this:
<div id="webResults">

There's nothing. All of the webresults have been removed.How come I can view the code in my internet browser but not on my application?? I even used an InStr method to confirm that the results weren't contained in the generated code.
I'm trying to connect and query a .dbf dBase table. I'm fairly certain I've got the connection string formatted properly, because I am no longer receiving errors that I can't locate the table.I've tried everything I can think of, and nothing seems to work to make a valid query. I've tried all sorts of syntax changes around the table name (which is just 'buildings'...nothing fancy). The error is a syntax error with an incomplete query on the executereader line.

I've been working on a project for months now (vb 2008 express). There is one final which I can't solve.I need to send images to a client from a 'server'(listener). The code below works most of the time but sometimes the image is incomplete. I believe this might be something to do with the tcp packet sizes varying, maybe limited by how busy it is out there on the net. I have seen examples of code that splits the image into chunks and sends them out, but I can't get them to work maybe because I'm using a different vb version. The pictures to be sent are small 20k max.
Any working code examples would be wonderful. I have been experimenting and failing with this final hurdle for weeks.
