VS 2010 Unexpected Error On Program Close With A Wait Loop?

Dec 1, 2011

In my MDI Application code I have a form that launches a second form then hides itself until the spawned form closes. It works great unless I choose to close the application while the spawned form is still up.

The following is some example code.

Dim ChildForm as New frmTaskWindow With { .MDIParent = Me, .AddingNew = True }
ChildForm.Show
Me.Hide()

[Code].....

Me.Show() ' error occurs here because my form is already closed by the system. Is there a way to get around this without just an error catcher?

Close() Puts Forms Into Crazy Open/Close Loop?

Mar 4, 2011

In a program I'm working on, I want a "Loading..." dialog to close when it can't log in to a site using the username and password provided by the user. Basically, I have the code set up right because the function it is supposed to carry out when that occurs does work, but for some reason it ends up in some really weird stuff happening. In the Loading form, I have it set to do "Form1.Show()" and then "Me.Close()", assuming it would simply show the login form and then close the Loading form. However, when this happens, the Loading form closes, and then for only an instant Form1 shows, and then the Loading form shows and Form1 closes. This happens forever until I stop the debugging, and I can't seem to figure out why. Am I using the wrong method? What exactly does Me.Close() do anyways? All I want to do is close the form and open another

.net - How To Wait For Form To Close Without ShowDialog()

May 9, 2012

In my program I use WebBrowser control for OAuth. It's located on vk_auth_window form. So in the code I call vk_auth_window.WebBrowser1.Navigate(vkauthurl). If authentication is successful, I silently get token, but if user is not authenticated a form vk_auth_window is showed to them to enter username and password. To check this I catch _DocumentComplete event and check for the right URL. I need no other code being executed until the user finished authentication or closed authentication form. ShowDialog() does the trick, but it somehow hides cursor from username and password fields in WebBrowser control. So I introduced a variable Dim showform as Boolean=True in and set it to False from the _DocumenComplete event and in the main code I use infinite loop.

While showform
System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(100)
Application.DoEvents()
End While

However it makes userinput slow due to thread sleeps. And If i remove them, it loads CPU quite a lot. Is there a better way to wait for form to close? What is it?

C# - Wait For Modeless Dialog To Close?

Apr 19, 2012

In form I have one button which has functionality to pick up some data from (by mouse click) Parent application.

I have handle for parent application handle, but even if i tried to bring it on top i am not able to do selection because form is modal.

Requirement here is open modeless dialog and wait till it close. other wise it goes further and executes functionality below.

Another option can be open form as modal and at runtime change it to modaless.

Wait Until Form Is Close Before Continuing?

I have something like this:

For Each Entry In CheckedListBox1.CheckedItems
SheetName = Entry.ToString()
Form2.Show()
Next

but I don't want to continue the loop until Form2 is closed. I tried something like this:

For Each Entry In CheckedListBox1.CheckedItems
SheetName = Entry.ToString()
Form2.Show()
Do

[code]....

But that just froze everything and used up all my CPU.

Wait For Batch File To Close Before Continuing?

Feb 1, 2012

I'm trying to run a batch file via VB and I need to wait for it to complete/exit before progressing. The issue I believe I am having is that when a batch file is executed, it opens cmd.exe and not the batch file.

This is what I am executing with VB
My.Computer.FileSystem.DeleteFile(My.Application.Info.DirectoryPath & "PingCheckmachines.txt")
FileCopy(My.Application.Info.DirectoryPath & "machines.txt", My.Application.Info.DirectoryPath & "PingCheckmachines.txt")
Dim psi As New ProcessStartInfo(My.Application.Info.DirectoryPath & "PingCheckgo.bat")
psi.RedirectStandardError = True
psi.RedirectStandardOutput = True
psi.CreateNoWindow = False .....

The problem I am having is that it will just delete ping.bat before it completes.
How do I go about monitoring the process from the batch file I call. Then once it exits, continue with the script?

Detect An Unexpected Shutdown Within A Program And React To It In A VB Program?

Aug 14, 2009

I'm working on a web browser named Hyvar.NET and i'd like to integrate a form of shutdown detection into it.

Currently, it simply uses a tri-option setting to decide how it opens - like this

If My.Settings.LoadLastOnStart = True Then
frm.wbTab.Navigate(My.Settings.LastOpenedPage.ToString)
ElseIf My.Settings.HomeOnStart = True Then

[Code]....

Each variable is appropriately named for its job as you can see.

However, i want to change this to react to correct and incorrect shutdowns - unexpected and user instigated ones for example. I.E: if the settings variable for the detection contained 0x000000, it could indicate a clean exit and continue as normal with a new session, but 0x000001 would indicate an unclean shutdown and present the user with an option of reopening the last session or continueing as normal, like in IE 7/8

Im 100% sure this will require a windows API call

Using Lockbits And An ASM DLL - Unexpected Error

Nov 29, 2009

In duplicated code using Lockbits in VB to obtain the address of Bitmap.Scan0, the first is OK, in all applications, but the second NEVER is. What is the explanation please? Surely both StartAddrA and StartAddrB should be valid pointers to Bitmap.Scan0 for calls to valid, functional ASM code in the functional DLL. The error is, it seems, in the VB Lockbits process. Using VS2010 Beta 2 and XP.

Difference In Date Format Causes Unexpected Error

Feb 4, 2009

Ok so i have a date time picker that holds a date that was entered by a user. My program works fine when ran on a computer using English(US) regional settings, but when i take it to a computer running any other regional settings, I.E. English(UK), which is the 2nd most common regional settings that will find its way to this program, I recieve an error because the Date format is backwards. What i'm curious about is how can i grab the system Regional Date format in order to rearrange my Date to fix its context?

I know that since the date is stored as a string i'm going to do something along the lines of this to break it apart:

Dim temp()
temp = Split(inputarray(7), "/")
inputarray(7) = temp(1) & "/" & temp(0) & "/" & temp(2)

i am almost 100% sure the above code will take a date in MM/DD/YYYY format and rearrange it to DD/MM/YYYY format.

UAC - Unexpected Error - Quiting After A Install On A New Machine

Aug 19, 2010

We have an application (Vb6) that gets installed at all of our client sites and they often (Vista/Windows 7) run into a the error message Unexpected error, quiting after a install on a new machine. The problem comes about when the UAC is on and the application is trying to create registry entries in areas it doesnt have access to because the application is running as a standard user. If the user runs the application as an admin the first time, everything sets up and life if good.

My question is, what is the most elegant way to setup those registry keys without forcing the user to run as an admin the first time? We could force them to run the applicaiton as an admin using a manifest file, but I dont want them to have to run as an
admin every time, just the first time.

Error - Unexpected End Of File Has Occurred. The Following Elements Are Not Closed

Mar 17, 2011

I am reading a large number of XML files and do not want my program to bomb on exceptions. I am making great strides in reporting the errors, skipping the offending files and continuing the import process. However I am having problems with XmlExceptions. I get the following XmlException on the While textReader.Read() line of my program:

Quote:

XmlException was unhandled
Unexpected end of file has occurred. The following elements are not closed:
my:PicInsert, my:PictureGroup, my:myFields. Line 153, position 430817.

I am finding some of the reasons why, missing tags etc, but those aren't really my concern. I just want to report the issue and continue. I am thinking about some kind of check for a valid xml file but fear that that might not catch it all. For example I had a image tag in one of the files that was missing an alt="" attribute and I am not sure if that would invalidate the entire XML file.What would be the best way to trap and deal with the exception with out causing interuption to the program?

VS 2010 - End A Statement - Doesn't Close You Program Properly And Hides Errors

Jan 6, 2012

End A statement which as far as i know doesn't close you program properly and hides errors. Right now i'm being forced to use end because i don't know how else to close my program properly. I'm not sure where my problem is but some of you should be able to fix it. I'm trying to make a game using directx with a game loop. This code is the skeleton of what i'm making.

Public Class Form1
Private ProgRunning As Boolean = True

Private Sub Form1_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load
Me.Show() 'Make the form appear
Me.Focus() 'Give the form focus

[CODE]...

This code runs alright because end is being used but if you rem end out the error which it's hiding comes out. The error is "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." I'm not totally sure but i'm guessing that the error is refering to the form.

VS 2010 How To Prevent Fields Being Reset In Form1 & Form2 On Program Close

Nov 18, 2011

I am Matthew and I'm extremely new to coding and any sort of scripting language; yet I am highly interested in programming and want to learn lots about this subject. So to start myself off I am trying to create some applications which I could use in day-to-day life to just basically make life easier.So the first program I am trying to make I am already confused and not sure what the heck I have to do in order to get it functioning, I've looked on lots of videos on you tube for tutorials and they have all done a great job but some videos just don't answer my questions.When I click a button and "Form2.Show()" appears, how can I make it so that when I type text in a list box in form2, it doesn't disappear when I close it? Then once I have known done that, how can I make it so I can choose a random string of text in the list box on form2 to show up on the click of a button on form1? Then a final question is, How do I prevent fields being reset in form1 & form2 on program close? Also, is it ok for me to make a thread asking 1 simple question? or do I have to ask a handful each time to save threads or something?

private Sub LoopingLesson()

what I want is when i hits certain value, like let's just say i is divisible by 365, then the 'while' looping will stop, and a message box saying "target reached" appear. then after I click button1, the looping will resume until it reaches the next number divisible by 365, and so on.
