I am using a dataset control on a form to store and read data from XML files. So far I use the following to write info.
VB
Dim drow As Data.DataRow = DataSet1.Tables("item").NewRow
drow("path") = strFilePath
drow("id") = strCreationDate

The problem is I need to APPEND data to the same file. What I do now results in the same file being overwritten. I am dealing with large amounts of data, so I would love a way to append to the file without the need to re-read it with each save.code lines 1-4 are in a loop so that at one time, they add a few hundred rows to the DataSet. After that loop is when the save takes place. However, I want to run that loop again and again every so often to update that same file.
Dim filesave As System.IO.StreamWriter[code]...
The above code works fine, but the problem is it overwrites the Quiz0.txt file's text. I want it to append the (";" & TbxOutput.Text & ";" & answrstrng) thing to what is already written in the Quiz0.txt file so that I can use the button (which runs this code) multiple times to add to the Quiz0.txt file.
Is there a simple sample for read and write to MSaccess from vb2010?I like to display one field of the database in a text box and write to a field in a table whatever I type in the textbox.
View 11 RepliesI have an excel database with one column and thousands of rows of "number" data. I need to import the data into my form read the first entry, run an algorithm then move the result to the second column then move to the second entry and so on. I am having issues with where to begin. I am able to convert the excel database to a text file if it makes it easier.The algorithm that needs to be ran consists of reading each character one at a time and is as follows:ENTRY example: 12358458754The characters 1,3,8,5,7,4 need to be summed then multiplied by 3. These are all the characters starting with the first one and skipping every other one. I will call them "odds" (not referring to numeric value)The characters that are skipped, I will call them "evens", need to be summed together then added to the result of "odds".
View 20 Repliesi'm writing an application where error messages are written into a text file.
text file is created using win32API createfile() function.
after that everytime an error occurs the message is written into the text file with writefile() API.
but whenever a new message is written the old text in the file is getting overwritten.
i want to append the new message at the end of the text already in the file.
The code below allows me to write a single line to a textfile. Id like to be able to open an entire textfile into a textbox, be able to edit said text and have it automatically write back to the same textfile.
Private myCoolFile As String = "C:UserskevinMy Documentspasswords.txt" '// your file.
Private myCoolFileLines() As String = Nothing '// String Array to read File Lines into.
Private sTemp As String = Nothing '// temp String to be used as needed.

I have recently decided to give .net another chance, but i have a few questions about it before i get really into it. RE: Files, I use random access files to store data as opposed to databases (namely i don't see the need for a database for storing so little information(records <200 max) knowing that it is an older system and less "cool" i don't care...) Will vs2010 express read, write to random access files? Would it be done kind of like vb6 (which is my current vb version)? I will be needing to print the text of rich text boxes, is vs2010 express capable of doing this?
View 7 Repliesstill working on my game, but a college classmate said that I need to use databases instead of text files...so I'm wanting to know, what databases does visual studios 2010 provide for you to use...what code line should I use to create/write to/read from a databasew, and how do/should I create a database table/refer to it??
I would love to provide code, but I'm both using my cell, and don't have access to my computer right now due to it not being accessale due to not having the ability to have it hooked up right now...got new floors and don't have it plugged in yet/set up again...
I'm converting older VBA code to VB. I'm using Visual Studio or VB 2010 but am new to this "oop" approach and not a seasoned programmer. Scenario:

How would i read a set of names out of a file and then append them to a list box?I am not guaranteed a pair will be on the same line, and not guaranteed that a line would contain a maximum of one pair(i.e., it might have three pairs or it might have one and a half pairs - a first name, last name, and another first name whose matching last name would be on the next line). A line may also be blank.All of this needs to be in a visual basic format.

View 1 RepliesI'm a newbie writing my first app. I need help with the following: I need to retrieve the logged in user which = GID, I then need to append it to a URL which will start our Help Desk chat client. I can retrieve the GID easy enough but can't figure out how to append it and pass it with the URL. I found a post which instructed to declare the url as a string also and concatenate it. The UserName would follow the ":" at the end of the Url.

The three forms in my project have the ability to print in PrintDocument1.Print event. Each print-document consists of only one page in landscape shape and everything works fine. But it seems a bit clumsy to print three times with three buttons. I know, I can use the PerformClick event, but I wonder if there is a simple way to append all three documents into one by clilking only one button in my last form?
View 1 RepliesI am trying to append a new line to a text file. Sometimes it posts to a new line (like I want it to) and sometimes it appends to the current line, consequently screwing up my read. I even put VbNewLine in the code.
Here is the snippet:
Dim outputline2 As String
outputline2 = equip & "," & value
Dim myfile2 = File.AppendText("equiped.txt")
myfile2.WriteLine(outputline2, vbNewLine)
myfile2.Close()

I am trying to extend an application to to write the details from textboxes on a invoice form to an xml file.I have created 3 methods for my invoice class which will open the invoice xml document, write to it, and close it.The open Invoice method creates and invoice.xml file and writes a start tag named invoices.
The WriteInvoice method writes an invoice element for the invoice with attribute named customerName and three child elements named ordertotal, discounTotal and Invoice total. These values are taken from the textboxes form the form.
The CloseInvoice writes the end tag for the root element(invoices) and closes the file.
I have wriiten code for these methods but can only get the open invoice method to work.
My code for the 3 methods is shown below:
Public Sub OpenInvoices()
Dim sInvPath As String = "C:MurachBeginning VB.NETExercise startsVB.NETChapter 14InvoiceInvoices.xml"
Dim InvoiceWriter As New XmlTextWriter(sInvPath, Nothing)
InvoiceWriter.Formatting = Formatting.Indented 'Set formatting of XML file
