Dec 8, 2011I'm new to VB and my book doesn't explain sequential searches very well. I need help with the application I'm creating for school. My application has to allow the user to enter a number and then it will verify if the number is valid by searching through the list of arrays I provided.The question:Create an application that allows the user to enter a charge account number. The application should determine whether the number is valid by comparing it to the numbers in the following list: (see code)The list of numbers should be stored in an array. A sequential search should be used to locate the number entered by the user. If the user enters a number that is in the array, the program should display a message indicating the number is valid. If the user enters a number that is not in the array , the program should display a message indicating the number is invalid.

Feb 13, 2010i am coding an application where I want to populate an array with the contents of a sequential file that is already populated as salary.txt in the debug folder. Basically, I want to copy the contents of that file to an array so that I may use a code to go with the intSubscript of the array. Right now it functions as just an array for this purpose, but I want to populate the array with the sequential file first. All attempts to do this, with stream writer etc and readline, I am just getting the first item in the file. I have tried to loop it and still only the first is accessable. Driving me batty, turning to the masses for guidence.[code]

Nov 14, 2010I am making an application that requires a sequential search to search the arrays. The search searches the user's input in the array,and if found, then it's valid, else it's invalid. I have initialized the array and done the sequential search, but apparently even the wrong input is coming out to be valid.

Aug 20, 2011I'm working on a new version of something I had created years ago in VB6. What I was doing then is populating a combobox with lines from a sequential file ("title","URL") like this:

And then checking against it on a button click to load the URL associated with the selected name:

What I'm trying to do in Visual Basic 2010 is the same process, though I'll be including a third field ("category","title","URL") to determine which one of four different comboboxes I add the entry to. I know I need to use streamreader, but I'm not finding much in the way of documentation or examples on how to do what I'm trying to do, which is:
- Populate one of four comboboxes with the second value in each line of an external text file, based on the first value in that line
- Set a string to the third value in a line of an external text file, based on the second value of that line
How to read these values from the file.

Nov 1, 2011I need to load a CSV file into a set of arrays, and show the output into a listbox, which are associated with other textboxes(labels). earlier i had the names all loading into the listbox, but the values in the label were only correct for the last line in the csv file, not corresponding correctly to the listbox values.

Feb 6, 2012I am trying to store 8 separate pieces of information in a text file (like a database) [but not a SQL database], consisting of integers and strings. How would I use an array to do this? Will an array collect data from text boxes (I also want to display the 8 pieces of information in separate boxes). also how would I save the text file so I can open it again or open a different text file (database?), from within the program?
EDIT: I see I need to use readline and writeline to read/write from a text file but how would I find specific data to show in my boxes?

Mar 22, 2009I know that Deleting a specific line in a sequential text file is impossible but instead copy the needed lines and not copying the unneeded ones to an output file .. killing the old one and renaming the new one with the same.. I can't make this step...

I made a form that when you put your CustomerID in Text3 Box.. it access the records and make some calculations. now.. The customer will return the car.. Then his data should be deleted.. I want to know how to make that when I enter the CustomerID and press on the Command button .. It copies the other lines to a new output folder and doesn't copy these ... So it appears to be deleted using this way..

Here I got 2 problems, both versions are returning different values at each call with the same array, and the sequential ForEach is being executed much more faster than the parallel.
Sequential Access File In VB
Apr 27, 2012I am working on a program in Visual Basic that incorporates using a sequential access file for a ballot type program. Each type the user clicks the save vote button, the amount of votes gets stored.
What I am trying to do is in my access file is to display the number of votes as an actual number. The way my program is written right now, the name of the candidate appears as many times as the vote was saved.
for example, if perez was voted for 4 times, in the access file perez is displayed on 4 different lines. How do I display the actual number of how many time they were voted for. I'm thinking using a counter variable, but not really sure how to really implement it in. this is what i have so far.

Using A Sequential File To Display Votes?
Apr 27, 2009So i'm writing this program that puts the number 0-3 in a new line in a text file. The number thats stored is dependant on the index of the users current selection in a listbox. I have no problems coding the button that stores the votes but I'm having some problems with the button that displays the votes in each choice's individual label. This is what I have so far. I add 3 to the index each time because of the CR and LF that's caused by the ControlChars.NewLine that's used when modifying the sequential file.The problem I'm having is "Explicit initialization is not permitted for arrays declared with explicit bounds." on the line where I try to make the contents of votes equal to the contents of the sequential file. The error makes sense to me, but I don't know any way to get around this.
